Most third-party guides say a refill uses 3 Animal Fat, though they disagree about whether a partly full lamp costs less.
How to refill the oil lamp in Windrose
- Collect Animal Fat. Boars are the most reliable source; see the drop details below.
- Use a Workbench. If you have not built one, open Building Mode, go to Crafting & Utilities, and place a Workbench.
- Open the second tab. Choose Refill/Repair, not the first tab.
- Select the lamp and confirm. The refilled lamp returns to your inventory.
Most third-party guides published in 2026 report a cost of 3 Animal Fat per refill. They disagree about partial refills: one says the cost stays at 3 whether the lamp is nearly full or empty, while another says a partly filled lamp may take only 1 or 2. This cost has not been resolved, so check the amount shown in your own game before confirming; if the fixed cost applies, waiting until the lamp is nearly empty conserves fat.

Where to find Animal Fat
Boars, Charging Boars, and Sows roam the starting island. Animal Fat is a random drop, not guaranteed on every kill. Guides commonly estimate about 2 Animal Fat from a Boar and about 1 from a Sow; those are approximate yields, not guaranteed drops.

How to get your first lamp and craft spares
First lamp
The first lamp is reported to be in the left chest inside the Smuggler’s Cache on the starting island. Search the cache if you have not found a lamp yet.
Spare lamps
Third-party guides report that spare lamps can be crafted for 4 Copper Ingots and 1 Rope once you can smelt. Carrying a spare and keeping Animal Fat stocked before entering caves gives you a fallback if your light runs low.

What to know about fuel duration and updates
One guide estimates a charge lasts 10–20 minutes of active use. Treat that as an approximate third-party estimate, not an official or guaranteed duration.
