Winds of War is Gray Zone Warfare’s update 0.3, released May 22, 2025, and MADFINGER Games described it as the game’s second major update. The “2.0” feel is a fair description of scope: weather, locations, combat information, tasks, squad missions, equipment and quality-of-life changes arrived together. It is not an official version label, and no measured player verdict on how the game felt has been published to back the comparison. Read the headline as a judgment about breadth, not a claim about how players as a whole responded.
What Winds of War is, and what it is not
MADFINGER Games’ May 22, 2025 launch announcement introduced the update as “Winds of War, the second major update for Gray Zone Warfare, is now live,” and said it was built on community feedback. The studio’s own version numbering places it at 0.3. Nothing in the developer’s material turns “2.0” into a branding or versioning term, so the headline’s comparison works only as interpretation.

Returning players should know one launch detail before anything else: the update included a full progress wipe. MADFINGER tied the wipe to major changes, a rebalance and a fresh start, and framed wipes as part of Early Access development.

What changed across the update
The update touched several layers of the game at once. The table below groups the changes by system, using the developer’s announcement and its detailed changelog. The counts in the first rows are MADFINGER’s own figures from the May 22, 2025 announcement.

Why the “2.0” comparison holds, and where it overreaches
The comparison holds on breadth. A single update that alters the weather simulation, adds more than 60 locations, changes how factions contest outposts, reworks tasks and squad play, and adds new equipment touches far more of the game than a typical content patch. That is the sense in which the update feels larger than its version number suggests.
It overreaches in three places. First, the developer’s own description that the update reshaped the experience is promotional language. Second, the sources do not establish a measured player consensus, so the claim that players felt they were playing a sequel is an impression, not a finding. Third, breadth is not depth: the announcement lists many systems, but the materials do not show how deeply the core loop itself changed. That question is the one the next update answers more directly.

How Winds of War compares with 0.4 Spearhead
MADFINGER’s later materials for 0.4 describe a more direct restructuring of the core game. The table sets the two developer descriptions side by side. Both come from the developer, so neither is independent evidence of how the updates played.

The practical difference is where each update concentrates its effort. Winds of War spread changes across the world and the surrounding systems. Spearhead, as MADFINGER describes it, aims deeper, at the loop and economy that every session runs on. If you are comparing the two, judge each by whether the change reaches the core loop and progression, and whether the claim comes from the developer or from player reports.

Studio context
MADFINGER’s official 2025 recap states that the studio shipped 17 releases in 2025 and grew to 110 people after hiring 25 colleagues. The same recap says 0.4 was originally planned for fall 2025 but needed more development time after its scope expanded. This is useful background on the pace of updates, though it is not evidence that any single update succeeded.
A launch-era driver problem
A May 2025 changelog notice warned that NVIDIA driver 576.40 caused startup crashes for most 50-series GPU users. It recommended staying on a prior driver, or using 576.28, while the problem was addressed. This was a version-specific notice from the launch period. It is not current compatibility advice, so check the game’s current notes and NVIDIA’s current driver information before changing your driver setup.

A community-reposted excerpt of a later MADFINGER devlog says Rogue Ops will open to Supporter Preview on October 19, 2026, with full release on October 22, 2026.
