No. Chickens and other farm animals do not trample or destroy crops in Stardew Valley. They can wander through planted areas and get in your way while you plant or harvest, but your crops are safe from them. Chickens can eat grass when they go outside; that is different from eating your garden.

What chickens can and cannot do to your crops

The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Crops reference says farm animals never trample or destroy crops. Chickens may occupy tiles in a field, so they can obstruct planting and harvesting, but they will not make crops disappear.

What chickens eat when they go outside

Chickens are coop animals. When allowed outside, coop animals can eat fresh grass; they can also eat hay. According to the Wiki’s Animals reference, a coop animal needs two tufts of normal grass for a meal. Blue grass provides a meal with one tuft, according to the Grass reference.

Grass grazing is separate from crop damage. The Grass reference also says fencing a grass tile prevents animals from eating that tile, which can help you manage where they graze. You do not need to fence chickens away from crops to protect the harvest.

If a crop goes missing

Chickens are not the cause. Crows are one possible cause: the Crops reference says they can eat crops when more than 15 crops are growing and no scarecrow is within range. Check that condition if you find a missing crop.

Letting chickens roam safely

  • You can let chickens walk through crop areas without risking crop damage.
  • Expect them to sometimes get in the way when you plant or harvest.
  • They can graze on grass outside when conditions allow; otherwise, they can eat hay if it is available.
  • The Coop reference notes that animals left outside overnight when the coop door is closed may be grumpy the following day.
