winhttp5.dll Missing: Trace the Legacy Component on Windows

“The program can’t start because winhttp5.dll is missing from your computer.” “winhttp5.dll was not found.” “winhttp5.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

winhttp5.dll is the old Microsoft Windows HTTP Services 5.0 library, not the modern winhttp.dll used by current Windows. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the safest repair is usually to identify the older application or Microsoft component requesting it, then repair or reinstall that product rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The 60-second answer

  1. Confirm whether the message says winhttp5.dll or winhttp.dll.
  2. Identify the program that fails and check its installer or launcher for Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair.
  3. Check Windows Security’s quarantine history.
  4. Repair or reinstall the application that owns the dependency, especially older software associated with MSXML 4.0.
  5. Verify that the DLL and application use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  6. Use DISM and SFC only if several Windows components are failing, not as a guaranteed way to restore a legacy application file.
  7. Do not download winhttp5.dll from a random DLL website or replace it with winhttp.dll.

Microsoft documents that WinHTTP 5.0 used winhttp5.dll, while WinHTTP 5.1 and later use winhttp.dll. The WinHTTP 5.0 download and support are no longer available from Microsoft, so there is no current official generic download to recommend.

The file was associated with the obsolete WinHTTP 5.0 redistributable and SDK. Older Microsoft components also installed it. In particular, Microsoft’s MSXML documentation identifies winhttp5.dll as a dependency of older MSXML components, including MSXML 4.0-era software.

That means the error usually points to an old program, installer, or runtime that was installed separately. It does not normally mean that a current Windows installation has lost one of its standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 files.

A particular historical copy may show a version such as 5.0.2602.0 and a size of approximately 0.23 MB, but those details should not be treated as universal specifications. Verify the actual file’s publisher, architecture, and version instead of judging it by size alone.

winhttp5.dll versus winhttp.dll

These filenames refer to different WinHTTP versions:

File Associated component Current status
winhttp5.dll WinHTTP 5.0 Obsolete legacy library
winhttp.dll WinHTTP 5.1 and later Modern Windows-integrated library

Installing or finding winhttp.dll does not satisfy software that explicitly imports winhttp5.dll. The names are not interchangeable, and renaming one file to the other will not convert its exported functions, dependencies, or compatibility.

Microsoft explains the version change in its WinHTTP 5.1 documentation. Its WinHTTP versions reference also records that Microsoft no longer provides the WinHTTP 5.0 download.

First identify the program that is failing

The name of the executable in the error dialog is more useful than the DLL name. Write it down before closing the message.

Look for:

  • An old desktop application that was recently updated or reinstalled
  • A legacy installer that stops before completing
  • Older software using MSXML 4.0
  • A game launcher with a Verify or Repair function
  • A vendor-specific runtime installed beside the application
  • A program that stopped working after antivirus cleanup, disk cleanup, or an uninstall

If the error appears during setup, the installer itself may be the owner. If it appears only when starting one application, the application directory is the first place to investigate.

Do not assume that Microsoft Windows is the product that needs reinstalling simply because Microsoft published the DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application

This is the most likely fix when only one older program reports the error.

Use the application’s own repair function

  1. Open the application’s launcher or setup program.
  2. Look for Repair, Change, Verify files, Scan and repair, or a similar command.
  3. Run the repair as an administrator if the application requests elevation.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Launch the affected program again.

For a game, use the launcher’s built-in file verification instead of copying a DLL into the game folder. Verification can restore files supplied by that game’s installer and may also repair an incomplete update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair from Windows Settings

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the application.

Not every desktop program exposes a Repair button. If the option is absent, continue with the original installer.

Reinstall from the vendor’s installer

  1. Find the application’s original installer or official installation media.
  2. If the program has an uninstaller, remove the program through Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Run the official installer again.
  5. Install the same architecture required by the application.
  6. Start the program before adding other plugins or modifications.

Do not delete application folders manually before uninstalling unless the vendor’s instructions specifically require it. Manual deletion can remove configuration or licensing data without repairing the underlying dependency.

If the application came from removable media, an organization’s software repository, or an old deployment package, use that source rather than a generic DLL archive. The application’s installer is the authoritative source for the copy it expects.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove a DLL after an update or after scanning an old application directory. Do not restore a file blindly, because an unsigned or altered DLL can be dangerous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand an event associated with the affected application.
  7. Check the detected file path, publisher, and threat details.
  8. Restore or allow the file only if it is clearly part of trusted software and you have verified the source.
  9. Repair or reinstall the owning application afterward.

Microsoft describes this process in its guide to Protection History.

If Windows Security identifies the file as malware, do not restore it merely to make the application start. Remove the application or obtain a clean installer from its vendor.

Fix 3: Check whether the file is missing or a dependency is failing

A message naming winhttp5.dll does not prove that the file itself is absent. The file may exist but be unusable because it is the wrong architecture, corrupted, unsigned, or dependent on another missing library.

Open Command Prompt and run:

where winhttp5.dll
dir "%windir%System32winhttp5.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64winhttp5.dll"

The commands may report that the file cannot be found. That is useful evidence, not a repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 contains 64-bit system files.
  • SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit system files.

The folder name is confusing, so do not infer the architecture from the directory name alone. Microsoft documents the behavior in its File System Redirector reference.

Also check the application folder. Windows DLL search behavior can cause a copy beside the executable to be loaded before another copy elsewhere. Microsoft’s DLL search order documentation explains why placing an arbitrary DLL in an application directory can create both compatibility and security problems.

Check the signature and version

If a trusted installer supplied the file:

  1. Right-click winhttp5.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  4. Select the signature and choose Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
  6. Review the Details tab for the file description, publisher, and version.

The expected description is Windows HTTP Services, and the publisher should be Microsoft Corporation for a Microsoft-supplied copy. A valid signature does not automatically prove that the file is the correct build for the application, but an unsigned replacement is a reason to stop and obtain the file from the owning product.

Fix 4: Resolve a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch

Legacy deployments of winhttp5.dll are commonly associated with 32-bit software, but the architecture of a specific file must be verified. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical symptoms include:

  • “The application was unable to start correctly”
  • “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
  • An error that remains after placing a seemingly correct DLL beside the executable
  • Different behavior between an old 32-bit program and a newer 64-bit program

The correct fix is to install the application’s matching package. If the vendor provides separate x86 and x64 installers, use the architecture required by the failing executable, not simply the architecture of Windows.

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit program directory or the reverse. Do not use the same DLL from another application unless the vendor explicitly identifies it as the correct build.

If the program is genuinely old and supports only Windows 2000- or Windows XP-era components, test it in a supported compatibility arrangement or replace it with a maintained application. Forcing an obsolete binary into a modern application environment can leave the program unable to start or create new dependency errors.

Fix 5: Repair the older Microsoft component

Some older applications installed MSXML 4.0 or another legacy Microsoft component that supplied winhttp5.dll. If the application’s installer reports a missing MSXML dependency, repair or reinstall the application that installed it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install a newer MSXML release on the assumption that it will provide the same file. A newer component can have different filenames, interfaces, registration behavior, and support status.

The older MSXML ServerHTTPRequest documentation describes the historical requirement for winhttp5.dll, while Microsoft’s current WinHTTP documentation confirms that WinHTTP 5.0 is obsolete and no longer has a current generic download.

If the application depends on an old runtime that Microsoft no longer distributes, the practical choices are:

  1. Use the application vendor’s original installer.
  2. Restore the application from a known-good backup or installation image.
  3. Run the application in an environment supported by its vendor.
  4. Replace the application if it cannot be safely maintained.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use this step when multiple Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or other protected system files are also reporting corruption. It is less likely to restore winhttp5.dll when that file belongs to an old application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Restart Windows if requested.
  3. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  4. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the affected application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.

Possible outcomes include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: review the application’s installer and the component ownership rather than repeatedly running SFC.

SFC does not guarantee restoration of a legacy DLL installed by third-party software or an obsolete Microsoft redistributable.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the specific repair issues instead of making you hunt through Windows components and repeat commands without a clear result; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair requires the full version.

Fix 7: Install pending updates and review recent changes

If the problem began immediately after an update, uninstall, antivirus event, disk cleanup, or partial reinstall, treat that timing as evidence.

Check Windows Update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application.

This does not install WinHTTP 5.0, but it can repair broader operating-system issues that appeared at the same time.

Review recovery options

If the application worked before a recent system change:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery on Windows 11, or open the corresponding recovery settings on Windows 10.
  3. Review available recovery options.
  4. Use System Restore or update recovery only when you understand what software may be removed or rolled back.

Microsoft lists the available methods in its Windows recovery options.

Driver updates are rarely the direct fix

A graphics, chipset, storage, or network driver does not normally supply winhttp5.dll. Update a driver only when the application’s own diagnostic identifies a driver problem or the failure began with a device or driver change.

For a manual update:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver was installed.

For the most reliable result, use the device manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers instead of making you identify and compare many hardware packages manually; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation requires the full version.

A driver update will not replace a missing application-owned winhttp5.dll. If one specific program still reports the DLL afterward, return to that program’s installer.

Do not run regsvr32 winhttp5.dll

regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation does not identify winhttp5.dll as a self-registering COM DLL. Running:

regsvr32 winhttp5.dll

is therefore not the normal fix and may produce an entry-point error. It does not download the file, repair its dependencies, or convert a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit one.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Avoid websites offering isolated copies of winhttp5.dll. A downloaded file may be:

  • The wrong architecture
  • The wrong build for the application
  • Unsigned or modified
  • Infected with malware
  • Missing its own dependencies
  • Intended for a different product
  • Placed in a directory where DLL search behavior creates a hijacking risk

The safe sources are the affected application’s official installer, its vendor’s repair package, trusted installation media, or a verified organizational software repository. For Windows system repair, use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and Microsoft recovery options.

There is no current official generic Microsoft WinHTTP 5.0 download to substitute for the owning product’s installer.

When to escalate the problem

If the steps above fail, identify the exact executable requesting the file. Use the error dialog, installer logs, application logs, or a reputable dependency-analysis tool to determine which product imports winhttp5.dll.

Then repair that product specifically. Do not keep replacing files in System32, SysWOW64, or unrelated application folders.

If the application is essential but only runs with obsolete Windows components, consider running it in a supported isolated environment or migrating to a maintained replacement. Compatibility mode can help with some older applications, but it does not recreate every missing runtime or guarantee that an unsupported component will function securely.

FAQ

Is winhttp5.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Usually not as a normal current system file. Modern Windows uses the newer winhttp.dll. winhttp5.dll may remain because older software installed it.

Can I replace winhttp5.dll with winhttp.dll?

No. They belong to different WinHTTP versions, and software that imports winhttp5.dll will not be repaired by renaming or copying winhttp.dll.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not merely because winhttp5.dll is missing. Visual C++ Redistributables are not established sources of this file. Install one only if the application separately reports a missing Visual C++ runtime.

Will SFC restore winhttp5.dll?

Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows files. An old application or legacy Microsoft component may own winhttp5.dll, in which case repairing or reinstalling that product is the correct fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error say the file is not designed to run on Windows?

That message can indicate corruption, but it can also result from the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a missing dependency. Check the application’s architecture and obtain the matching file from its installer.

Does winhttp5.dll need to be registered?

Normally, no. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair tool, and registering this file is not the standard solution.

What if the application still fails after reinstalling?

Check antivirus Protection History, confirm that the application and DLL have matching architecture, and identify whether another dependent DLL is missing. If the product requires an obsolete runtime no longer distributed by Microsoft, use its original vendor installer or move the application to a supported replacement or environment.
