bitsprx3.dll Not Found: Rebuild Windows BITS Safely

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

bitsprx3.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Background Intelligent Transfer Service, or BITS. If Windows says it is missing, corrupted, or unable to load, repair Windows system files before downloading or copying any DLL.

The safest repair sequence is:

  1. Identify the exact error and affected program.
  2. Run DISM, then SFC from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Repair Windows Update and BITS.
  4. Check antivirus quarantine and malware history.
  5. Repair or reinstall the affected application if it still fails.
  6. Use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall if system repair does not work.

What bitsprx3.dll is

The file’s historical description is Background Intelligent Transfer Service 2.0 Proxy. Its publisher and product are Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Windows Operating System.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

BITS transfers data in the background while controlling bandwidth and allowing interrupted downloads to resume. Windows Update and other Windows components use BITS. The older filename bitsprx3.dll is mainly associated with BITS 2.x-era Windows releases, especially Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Those operating systems are obsolete and should not be treated as current repair targets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Modern Windows releases use newer BITS files and may show a file named BitsProxy.dll instead. Do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain the older bitsprx3.dll filename.

Identify the file and the failure first

Before changing anything, record the complete message and the program that displays it. Common variations include:

Message What it usually indicates
bitsprx3.dll is missing Windows or an application cannot find the file it expects
bitsprx3.dll was not found The file is absent from the expected Windows or application search path
bitsprx3.dll could not be loaded The file may exist, but Windows cannot load it or one of its dependencies
The module bitsprx3.dll was not found The named file or a dependency may be unavailable
bitsprx3.dll is corrupted The file may not match the Windows installation or may be damaged
bitsprx3.dll is not designed to run on Windows The file may be for the wrong architecture, version, or operating system

Also note when the problem began. Important clues include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Immediately after Windows Update
  • After antivirus or malware-removal software acted
  • After a disk failure or interrupted repair
  • After cloning Windows to another drive
  • After manually replacing system files
  • After an incomplete Windows upgrade
  • Only when one old application or game starts
  • Whenever Windows Update or another system feature runs

Do not assume that the named DLL is the real cause. A program can report one DLL while a dependency loaded by that DLL is the item that is missing or incompatible.

Check the installed file safely

Do not search for the file on a random download page. First check whether Windows already has a copy.

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Search the Windows drive for bitsprx3.dll.
  3. If a result appears, right-click it and select Open file location.
  4. Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
  5. Select the signer and choose Details.
  6. On the Details tab, review the description, product name, publisher, file version, and original filename.

A genuine system file should be in a Windows-managed location and have Microsoft identification that matches the operating system. A copy found inside a temporary folder, a Downloads folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves additional suspicion.

A file’s existence does not prove that it is correct. Compare its path, signature, architecture, and version with the Windows installation that owns it. Historical copies of this component vary by Windows edition, service pack, build, language, architecture, and servicing level. There is no single universal version or size that applies to every computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Windows architecture

To identify whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Read System type.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 have different architecture roles. The names are confusing: System32 is generally the native 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 stores many 32-bit system components.

Do not copy the same DLL into both directories. Do not select a destination based on a download page’s instructions. Windows servicing determines which files belong in which location.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the best first repair when the file is genuinely missing or damaged.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to replace missing or corrupted protected system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

Run DISM first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. It can remain at one percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window simply because progress appears slow.

When DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward, even if SFC reports that it found no integrity violations.

Microsoft’s documented procedure is covered in its System File Checker and DISM repair instructions.

  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them
Restart and repeat the action that produced the error.

  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them
Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If the result does not change, use a matching Windows repair source or move to System Restore or a repair reinstall.

  • DISM reports that source files could not be found
Use a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents this form:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid repair source that matches your Windows edition and build. Do not use a source from a different Windows release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; its full repair capability is separate from the scan. It is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.

Fix 2: Repair BITS and Windows Update

If the error appears during Windows Update, or the BITS service is not working, repair those services after running DISM and SFC.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Troubleshoot.
  4. Select Other troubleshooters.
  5. Find Windows Update.
  6. Select Run.
  7. Apply any recommended repair.
  8. Restart the computer.

On Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Troubleshoot.
  4. Select Additional troubleshooters.
  5. Select Windows Update.
  6. Select Run the troubleshooter.
  7. Apply the recommended repair and restart.

Microsoft maintains the current Windows Update troubleshooter instructions.

For a BITS-specific problem, use the BITS troubleshooter through Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooter guidance or the Get Help application when Windows offers it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the BITS service

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
  5. Double-click it.
  6. Check its Service status and Startup type.
  7. If it is stopped and the controls are available, select Start.
  8. Select Apply, then OK.

Do not force a service configuration merely because a website recommends a particular startup type. Windows manages service behavior according to the installed version and update state.

Restart Windows and check for updates again.

Historical Windows versions

Microsoft documents BITS 2.0 as part of Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1. The historical KB842773 package was intended for earlier supported installations at that time. It is not a suitable download for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Do not install an old XP-era BITS package on a modern Windows installation. If the computer really runs an obsolete Windows release, replacing it with a supported operating system is safer than trying to rebuild it with unrelated historical files.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and malware history

Security software may quarantine a system file after detecting tampering, or malware cleanup may remove a modified copy. Do not restore the file automatically.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  1. Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
  2. Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent history page.
  3. Search for bitsprx3.dll.
  4. Check the detection reason, original path, and action taken.
  5. Restore the file only if it is identified as a Microsoft-signed file in the expected Windows location and the quarantine event clearly explains the current error.
  6. If the detection indicates malware or an untrusted replacement, leave it quarantined.
  7. Run a full security scan.
  8. Run DISM and SFC after the scan.

If malware may have modified Windows, change important passwords from a separate trusted device after securing the computer. Do not use a quarantined file as a replacement source merely because its filename matches.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected program

If only one old application or game reports the error while Windows Update and other Windows functions work normally, the program may be expecting an obsolete BITS component.

  • Powerful security. Safeguard data and access anywhere with hardware-based isolation, encryption, and malware protection built in.

First use the program’s repair option:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the program.
  8. If it still fails, select Reset only after checking whether it removes local settings or saved data.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs.
  3. Select Programs and Features.
  4. Select the program.
  5. Choose Repair or Change if offered.

If repair does not exist or does not help, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. Use a version that supports your Windows release.

Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or a driver simply because a generic DLL article lists them. Install one of these only when the complete error, the program’s documentation, or Event Viewer identifies that separate dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check dependencies and Event Viewer

A present DLL that cannot load usually needs dependency investigation.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application and System.
  5. Look for errors at the time of the failure.
  6. Open the event and record the application name, faulting module, exception text, and referenced file.

If the error names a different DLL, repair that component instead of repeatedly replacing bitsprx3.dll.

If the program is old, check whether it is 32-bit. A 32-bit application may require 32-bit dependencies even on 64-bit Windows. Do not mix files from XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows 11.

Fix 6: Update or reinstall a relevant driver

A driver is not a normal fix for a missing BITS proxy DLL. Consider it only when Event Viewer, Device Manager, or the application identifies a related hardware or driver failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the error.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the General tab and read Device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab and review the provider and status.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows and retest.

If a recent driver caused the problem, use Roll Back Driver when available. Do not remove an essential storage, chipset, or network driver without a replacement plan.

Finding the correct driver among many hardware models can be tedious, especially after a clean installation. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installing a driver remains optional, and the full version handles the installation step.

Does regsvr32 fix bitsprx3.dll

Usually, no.

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry point. It does not restore a missing file, repair a corrupted Windows image, or correct a wrong-architecture dependency.

Historical bitsprx3.dll builds expose registration-related exports, so regsvr32 appeared in some old BITS repair procedures. Use it only when a documented procedure for the exact legacy Windows build identifies a registration problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft describes the command in its regsvr32 documentation.

Do not run both 32-bit and 64-bit versions against random copies. Do not register a DLL downloaded from an unofficial source. If registration returns an error, treat that as evidence of a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged file, or unsuitable procedure rather than trying repeated commands.

What not to do

Do not download bitsprx3.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or fail to repair the underlying Windows component.

Do not copy a DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder because a download page recommends it. Do not mix files from different Windows versions. Do not replace a quarantined file without checking its signature and original path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe sources are Windows component repair, Windows Update, a matching Microsoft installation source, System Restore, Windows recovery, and the official installer for the affected application.

If the file is still missing after repair

If DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, and application repair do not resolve the error, use Windows recovery.

Try System Restore

System Restore is useful when the problem began after an update, cleanup, driver installation, or other system change.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  7. Confirm the restore.

System Restore rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files, but recently installed applications or drivers may be removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft lists this and other recovery paths in its Windows recovery options.

Use Windows 11 repair reinstall

On supported Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now when available.
  6. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. Microsoft describes the feature in its Windows repair reinstall guidance.

If that option is unavailable, use matching Windows installation media and choose a repair or in-place upgrade path that preserves data when offered. Back up important files first.

FAQ

Is bitsprx3.dll malware?

The filename itself is a legitimate historical Microsoft Windows component. A file with that name can still be malicious if it is in an unexpected directory, unsigned, or modified. Check its path and digital signature, then scan the system.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this a Windows Update file or an application file?

It belongs to the Windows/BITS family. An old application may still expect it, but that does not make the application the original owner of the component.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. Windows determines the correct component location and architecture. Repair the Windows image instead.

Do I need both System32 and SysWOW64 copies?

Not automatically. Those directories serve different architecture roles on 64-bit Windows. Never duplicate a DLL without a verified Windows servicing reason.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Only when the full error or application documentation identifies that runtime. Those packages do not generally repair a missing Windows BITS component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the file exist but still fail to load?

A dependency may be missing, the file may be for the wrong architecture, or the Windows installation may contain mixed or damaged components. Check Event Viewer, then run DISM and SFC.

When should I reinstall the program?

Reinstall it when only one old application reports the error and Windows Update, BITS, and system-file checks work normally. Use the publisher’s installer, not an isolated DLL.

What is the safest overall fix?

Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow, restart, and repair Windows Update or BITS. If the issue began after a recent system change, use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall rather than forcing an unrelated DLL into a system folder.
