winrssrv.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, not a standalone runtime that should be downloaded into a game or application folder. When winrssrv.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Windows component store first rather than replacing the file manually.
The file belongs to the Windows Remote Shell and Windows Remote Management infrastructure used by winrs, WinRM, PowerShell remoting, and related management components. A damaged update, antivirus quarantine, mismatched system file, or malware can all produce the same-looking error.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components. The names are confusing, but copying a DLL between those folders is not a repair method.
Errors caused by winrssrv.dll problems
You may see any of these messages:
- “winrssrv.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because winrssrv.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting winrssrv.dll.”
- “winrssrv.dll could not be loaded.”
- “winrssrv.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
The message alone does not prove which program caused the failure. The error may appear when Windows starts, when a management utility launches, or when a program requests a damaged Windows component. Check the exact program name, event log entry, or path shown by the error before assuming that a game or third-party application owns the file.
First check the file path and signature
Before repairing anything, check whether a suspicious copy is being loaded.
- Press
Win+Eto open File Explorer. - Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Search for
winrssrv.dll. - If you use 32-bit software on 64-bit Windows, also check
%WINDIR%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
- Select the Microsoft signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A legitimate copy should normally be in one of the Windows system directories and should carry a valid Microsoft signature. A file with this name in a game directory, temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated application directory deserves extra scrutiny.
Do not delete a suspicious file before recording its location and checking it with Windows Security. A similarly named file such as winscomrssrv.dll is not the same file and should not be treated as proof that winrssrv.dll is present.
Fix 1: Install updates, restart, then repair Windows
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing, corrupted, or replaced during servicing.
Install pending Windows updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
After the restart, test the program or management function that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends this order for missing or corrupted system files.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, run Windows Update again and retry. If Windows Update is itself damaged, use a genuine installation source that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the Windows folder on matching installation media. Do not use a folder copied from an unrelated computer or a different Windows build.
Repeating SFC and DISM without recording what changed can make troubleshooting hard. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show repair issues before its full version applies repairs, which is useful when you are manually hunting through Windows corruption and cannot tell which component changed. It is optional, and Windows repair commands remain the correct first-line method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the SFC result
SFC normally reports one of these outcomes:
- Did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact.
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: inspect the log and continue with the later repairs.
- Could not perform the requested operation: restart into Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment and retry.
To extract the relevant SFC entries:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop and look for references to winrssrv.dll or related WinRM files.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Security software can quarantine a genuine system file, but a file named winrssrv.dll outside the normal Windows directories may also be an unauthorized replacement.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined or blocked items.
- Open an entry and record its path, detection name, and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- The path is the expected Windows system directory.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- The detection is confirmed as a false positive.
- The security product provides a clear restore option.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the system. If the path is unusual, the signature is invalid, or the detection is unclear, do not restore it. Run a full scan, followed by Microsoft Defender Offline if malware is suspected, and then run DISM and SFC again.
Fix 3: Use System Restore if the problem started recently
System Restore is appropriate when winrssrv.dll worked before a Windows update, driver installation, utility installation, or other system change.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Test the original program after Windows starts.
If Windows will not boot, enter Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
Fix 4: Repair Windows 11 without removing your files
If DISM, SFC, and System Restore do not resolve the issue, Windows 11 provides a repair reinstall through Windows Update on supported systems.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported. If the option is missing or fails, use matching Windows installation media and choose the repair or upgrade path carefully. Back up important files before any major repair installation.
Fix 5: Investigate WinRM or Windows Remote Shell only after file repair
If the error appears specifically when using winrs, WinRM, PowerShell remoting, or a remote-management tool, the file may be intact while the related Windows configuration is damaged.

First complete the update, DISM, and SFC steps. Then check the exact error in Event Viewer:
- Press
Win+X. - Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Applications and Services Logs.
- Review Microsoft > Windows > Windows Remote Management if present.
- Also inspect Windows Logs > System around the time of the failure.
Do not enable or disable random services based only on the DLL message. WinRM configuration, firewall rules, authentication, and permissions can produce separate errors that a DLL replacement will not solve.

You can inspect optional Windows components without changing them:
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows features.
- Leave settings unchanged unless a specific Microsoft procedure requires a feature change.
- Restart only if Windows applies a requested feature change.
The Windows Features dialog is not a general DLL repair tool. Do not toggle unrelated features hoping to recreate winrssrv.dll.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the timing points to a driver change
A driver is not the normal owner of winrssrv.dll, but a broken driver or incomplete update can leave Windows servicing in a bad state. Use Device Manager only when the problem began immediately after a driver change or Windows reports a related device error.
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider, date, and version.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if the button is available and the problem began after that update.
- Otherwise select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver page or Windows Update. Do not replace winrssrv.dll because Device Manager shows an unrelated warning icon.

What not to do
Do not download winrssrv.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or an invalid signature. Even a clean file may not fix the component store, dependencies, registry state, or servicing mismatch that caused the error.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, matching installation media, or a Microsoft repair reinstall instead.
Do not copy the file from another PC
Two computers can run different Windows editions, builds, update levels, and architectures. Copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit system directory, or vice versa, can create loader errors and undermine Windows servicing.
Do not put it beside a game or application
winrssrv.dll is a Windows component associated with Remote Shell and WinRM. Placing a replacement in an application folder can cause that application to load an untrusted or mismatched copy while leaving Windows itself damaged.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
File inventories may show registration-related exports, but regsvr32 cannot recreate a missing binary, repair dependencies, or restore the component store. Use it only when a specific COM registration error is reported and Microsoft or the software vendor explicitly instructs you to register that exact file.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are not automatic fixes for winrssrv.dll. The filename ending in .dll does not mean the file belongs to those runtime packages.
If the error still remains
After the repairs, confirm:
- The error’s exact path.
- Whether
winrssrv.dllexists inSystem32orSysWOW64. - Whether its Microsoft signature is valid.
- The final DISM and SFC results.
- Any matching entries in
CBS.log. - Windows Security Protection History.
- Relevant Event Viewer entries.
- Whether the failure occurs only with WinRM or also during normal startup.
If repaired files become damaged again, back up important data and investigate disk health or hardware problems. Persistent corruption can be caused by storage errors rather than by the DLL itself.
FAQ
Is winrssrv.dll legitimate?
Yes, when it is the Microsoft-signed file in the expected Windows system directory. A file with the same name in an application or temporary folder should not be trusted automatically.
Is winrssrv.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. It is associated with Windows Remote Shell and WinRM, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, or .NET installation.
Which Windows versions include it?
Public inventories identify the component across older Windows releases and Windows Server packages. The correct file varies by Windows release, architecture, and servicing level, so there is no universal version to download.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually not. Registration cannot repair a missing or mismatched Windows binary. Use it only for a specific registration-related error with matching Microsoft or vendor instructions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What if the file is missing from both System32 and SysWOW64?
Run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt. If those commands cannot restore it, use System Restore or a supported Windows repair reinstall rather than copying the file manually.
Why does the message mention a program or game?
The program may be the first component that requested the damaged Windows file. That does not prove the program owns winrssrv.dll or that reinstalling it will repair Windows. Check the path and event details before choosing an application-specific fix.
