At least three published titles share it: Virginia Boecker’s young adult fantasy novel The Witch Hunter, Max Seeck’s crime thriller The Witch Hunter, and the tabletop role-playing game Witch Hunter: The Invisible World. The sources available for this guide do not document a video game under this title. If you are looking for one, check the publisher and subtitle before you buy, cite, or search for it.

Virginia Boecker’s The Witch Hunter
Boecker’s novel is a young adult fantasy published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Its protagonist is Elizabeth Grey, a royal witch hunter who is accused of witchcraft and sentenced to burn. She is offered a rescue by the wizard Nicholas Perevil, on the condition that she break his curse. The story places her among witches, ghosts, pirates, and a healer, and she has to reassess who her friends and enemies are. If your search is for a fantasy novel with a young heroine, this is the title that matches.
Max Seeck’s The Witch Hunter
Seeck’s novel is a crime thriller, not a fantasy. Penguin Random House lists it in paperback, ebook, and audiobook formats. Its detective is Jessica Niemi, a police officer in Helsinki, who investigates ritual murders linked to the books of a famous author. The publisher frames the book as a crime thriller with supernatural or occult elements, so readers who expect a monster or witch story should expect a police procedural with an occult layer.

#1 Best Overall
Witch Hunter: The Invisible World
The game is a role-playing game, not a video game. Its rulebook sample describes Witch Hunter as a swashbuckling horror RPG set on a version of 17th-century Earth. It names five core themes: horror, action, history, folklore, and faith. The current publisher listing from Studio 2 Publishing gives the same framing in its own words: “Witch Hunter: The Invisible World is a role-playing game of swashbuckling adventure and colonial horror set in a land much like our 17th Century.” The listing does not attribute that sentence to a named person.
Editions and availability
- Original core rules: catalogued by RPGnet as a 2007 hardcover from Paradigm Concepts, ISBN 978-1-931374-35-4. RPGnet also lists an alternate Earth setting in 1698. This is catalogue information, not the publisher’s own statement.
- Current listing: Studio 2 Publishing lists the core rulebook at $39.99. When checked for this article, the listing was marked backordered. Price and stock can change, so confirm them with the publisher or a retailer before ordering.
How to name the title correctly
- Use the author in any headline or citation: “The Witch Hunter by Virginia Boecker” or “The Witch Hunter by Max Seeck.”
- For the game, use the full name “Witch Hunter: The Invisible World,” not “Witch Hunter” alone.
- Check the ISBN or publisher before linking to a product, since the bare title matches all three works.
Where video games fit
None of the three works is documented as a video game in the sources available for this guide. The tabletop game is the only one with interactive play, and it is categorised as a role-playing game. If a video game under this title exists, it is not covered here.
