When PC Gamer’s Andy Chalk asked Jack Thompson, long one of the most vocal critics of violent video games, about Florida’s embrace of Grand Theft Auto 6 marketing, Thompson did not engage with the question. According to Chalk’s account, he answered with accusations of fascism, compared the writer to Joseph Goebbels, and told him to stop getting in touch. The exchange shows that Thompson’s objections to the franchise have not softened. It also sets up a wider question about how a series that once sat at the centre of a moral panic became one of the most mainstream entertainment properties in the world.
What the outreach was about
Chalk’s question concerned promotional partnerships in Florida tied to Grand Theft Auto 6. PC Gamer reports that the question was about government involvement in promoting a commercial product, and Thompson’s reply was built around that point. The article does not describe a broader dispute over the game’s content.

The exchange, point by point
PC Gamer quotes the following from Thompson and the department, as relayed by Chalk. The quotations are reproduced as published in that feature.
- Thompson’s opening reply: “If you don’t understand that government promotion of commercial interests is fascism then we have very little to talk about.” He also directed the writer to “Ask the County Sheriff what she thinks about this unholy corporatist alliance.”
- The sheriff’s department’s response: Chalk relayed that the department was not concerned by “promotional decisions [made] by private businesses or organizations.”
- Thompson’s escalation: He accused Chalk of drinking the “fascist Kool-Aid,” likened him to Joseph Goebbels, and told him to stop contacting him.
- The follow-up email: “The problem is your work proves you are not an honest journalist.”
Two positions that answer different questions
The sheriff’s department and Thompson are not really disagreeing about the same thing. The department’s reported statement addresses decisions made by private businesses or organizations. Thompson’s objection is aimed at government promotion of commercial interests. Read that way, the department’s answer does not respond to Thompson’s central complaint, which may be why the exchange did not move forward.

| Party | Position as reported | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Jack Thompson | Government promotion of commercial interests is fascism; the arrangement is an “unholy corporatist alliance.” | Should government bodies promote a commercial product? |

Background: the Hot Coffee controversy
PC Gamer uses the 2005 Hot Coffee episode as historical context for the alarm that surrounded Grand Theft Auto at the time. The details below come from that feature’s account; the rating body’s and the regulator’s own records are the primary references for them.
What Hot Coffee involved
The feature describes a mod for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that activated code already present in the game but left unused. That code allowed access to a sexual mini-game, which is how the controversy involved sexual content reachable through unused game code.

The re-rating and the FTC criticism
The feature reports that the game was re-rated Adults Only in 2005. It also reports that the Federal Trade Commission criticized Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive for not telling consumers that the discs contained potentially viewable nude characters and a potentially playable mini-game.
Thompson’s record and the GTA 6 rating
PC Gamer describes Thompson as a prominent critic of violent games in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and notes that he was portrayed by Bill Paxton in the BBC Two docudrama The Gamechangers.
Rank #3
The rating reported for GTA 6
The feature reports an ESRB rating of M for Grand Theft Auto 6, with these content descriptors:
- Blood and gore
- Intense violence
- Mature humor
- Nudity
- Strong language
- Strong sexual content
- Use of drugs and alcohol
Check the ESRB’s own listing for the current rating and descriptors before relying on them. The feature describes a console release as approaching. It does not give a date, physical editions or supported platforms, and this article does not establish those details either.

Mainstream reach and the ESA figure
To make the case that Grand Theft Auto is now mainstream, PC Gamer cites a Entertainment Software Association figure from 2025: the average age of a US gamer is 36 years old, and that gamer has been playing for 18 years. PC Gamer attributes both numbers to the ESA; the underlying ESA report is not reproduced here, so treat the figures as the feature’s attribution.

| Claim | Status in the reporting |
|---|---|
| Thompson replied angrily, accused Chalk of dishonesty and told him to stop contacting him | Reported by Chalk, with direct quotations |
| The sheriff’s department was not concerned by private promotional decisions | Reported by Chalk as the department’s response |
| Hot Coffee involved unused code and a sexual mini-game | PC Gamer’s historical account; check against primary sources |
| GTA 6 is rated M with the listed descriptors | Reported by PC Gamer; check the ESRB listing |
| The ESA figures on the average US gamer | Attributed by PC Gamer to the ESA’s 2025 report |
| Violent crime did not rise because of games | The author’s interpretation; the feature offers no crime study or causal analysis |
| Thompson has softened his view of the franchise | Not supported; the exchange gives the opposite impression |
The article’s conclusion that Thompson’s predicted catastrophe did not follow from games is commentary. It is a reasonable reading of the franchise’s commercial history, but it is not a demonstrated finding about causation.
