Wizards of the Coast first said a promotional image for Ravnica Remastered was not made with AI, then admitted that AI-generated components had entered the creative. The company said a human did the overall work and that the art came from a vendor; it accepted responsibility for ensuring its standards were met.
What happened with the Magic: The Gathering image?
The image was promotional marketing for Ravnica Remastered. After viewers questioned details in its background, Wizards initially denied that AI had been used. Those visual criticisms prompted scrutiny, but they are not, by themselves, proof of how the image was made.
On January 7, 2024, the official Magic account corrected its earlier statement. Wizards said, “We made a mistake earlier when we said that a marketing image we posted was not created using AI.” GameSpot reproduced the statement in its January 8 report.
What did Wizards say about how the image was made?
Wizards described the image as an overall human-created work that included components from tools such as Photoshop. It said the art came from a vendor, but that oversight remained Wizards’ responsibility: “While the art came from a vendor, it’s on us to make sure that we are living up to our promise to support the amazing human ingenuity that makes Magic great.” The company did not identify a specific person or establish the intent behind the use of those components.

How did Wizards respond?
Wizards said it would update how it worked with vendors on creative outside its game products, including social-media marketing images. That was its stated response to the incident; the available reporting does not establish which later vendor-process changes were implemented.

What is Wizards’ current policy on generative AI?
Wizards’ Generative AI art FAQ, updated June 18, 2025, says artists, writers, and other creatives contributing to Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons must not use generative AI tools to create final products. The FAQ frames the policy around the human creativity behind both games; that is Wizards’ stated position, not an independent finding about the 2024 advertisement.
The FAQ also describes how Wizards says it handles concerns: it gathers reports, reviews the art, reruns tools, and contacts the artist. It acknowledges that detection is difficult and that privacy concerns, inconclusive investigations, or internal actions may mean the company does not publicly address every allegation.

Wizards says it is investing in a pilot with Voight.ai, described as a customized detection-tool project, and emphasizes keeping a human involved. Those are statements about the company’s approach, not independent evidence of a tool’s accuracy. The FAQ’s rule concerns final Magic and D&D products; the 2024 incident concerned marketing creative, so the two should not be treated as identical cases.
