Wizards cited personal threats against committee members, along with the workload and safety burden of managing a large format through a five-person group. The available announcements establish a handoff, not a documented list of mass resignations.
What happened to the Commander Rules Committee?
On September 30, 2024, Wizards announced that the Commander Rules Committee was transferring management of the format to Wizards’ game design team. The company described the change as a response to the scale and risks of the job, saying that “the task of managing Commander has far outgrown the scope and safety of being attached to any five people.” Wizards’ announcement also said committee members had faced personal threats during the preceding week.
This was a transfer of format management; Wizards did not describe it as firing or formally replacing the committee. The available public account does not identify a list of people who “mass resigned” or specify individual resignations. The precise, supportable description is that the committee handed management to Wizards amid threats and safety concerns.
Did the September 2024 bans cause the handoff?
The handoff came one week after a September 23 banned-list update, but the sequence alone does not establish that the bans caused the governance change. The September 23 announcement banned four cards:
#1 Best Overall
- READY-TO-PLAY COMMANDER DECK FOR NEWCOMERS AND FANS: Join friends in epic battles! This Magic: The Gathering Starter Commander Deck, First Flight (White-Blue), is ready to play straight out of the box
- INTRO TO MAGIC’S MOST POPULAR FORMAT: Commander is a multiplayer way to play Magic! Learn how to play with your own deck, easy-to-follow rules, strategy tips, and reference card
- 100 CARD WHITE-BLUE DECK: With the First Flight deck, take wing with the sphinx Isperia, Supreme Judge, and overwhelm foes with a squadron of flying friends

- Dockside Extortionist

Wizards’ stated explanation for taking over centered on threats, workload, and the safety of a five-person body—not a claim that these bans alone prompted the transfer.
Who runs Commander now?
Wizards holds final authority over Commander management. In October 2024, it announced a 17-member Commander Format Panel (CFP) to bring community perspectives into work on the format. The panel discusses Commander regularly with Wizards’ design and other teams and shares community concerns and opinions. It is collaborative and advisory, not an independent governing body.

Gavin Verhey, who introduced the panel for Wizards, explained the division of responsibility: “Ultimately, myself and other designers at Wizards are going to make the final calls, but I do expect that most of the time majority opinion on the panel will win out.” In other words, the panel can meaningfully shape discussions and recommendations, but Wizards makes the final decisions. Wizards’ panel announcement describes its role and launch membership.
How the governance structure has changed
October 2024: A community panel joins Wizards’ process
The CFP gave community participants a regular channel into Commander discussions after the management handoff. It did not restore the previous arrangement of independent community governance because Wizards retained final authority.

December 2025: The panel’s first planned rotation
Wizards announced a planned first annual rotation: 11 members stayed, six rotated off, and Alex Heyer and Tomer Abramovici joined. This was panel turnover, distinct from the 2024 transfer of management. Wizards’ December 2025 update lists the changes.
February 2026: Panel participation in policy work
In February 2026, Wizards documented the CFP and its Commander Design group discussing cards and voting on potential unbans. Biorhythm was unbanned; Lutri, the Spellchaser was also unbanned but remained banned as a companion. A separate update covered bracket policy and anticipated further communication. These updates show the panel participating in policy work, while Wizards continues to publish decisions and manage the format. The February 9 banned-and-restricted announcement records the unbans, and the brackets update addresses bracket policy.

What the change means for Commander players
Commander remains a 100-card singleton format built around a commander. Wizards’ current Commander overview describes five optional brackets, a beta system intended to help playgroups align expectations for games. The governance change affects who manages the format and how community views enter policy discussions; it does not change the basic identity of Commander as a multiplayer Magic format.
Quick Recap
- Final authority: Wizards of the Coast.
- Community input: The Commander Format Panel contributes perspectives and participates in discussions.
- Documented reason for the handoff: Threats, safety concerns, and workload attached to the former five-person management structure.
- What is not established: An itemized roster of mass resignations or evidence that the September 2024 bans alone caused the transfer.
