Magicka 2 is best suited to co-op groups who enjoy experimenting with spells—and can laugh when friendly fire turns a fight into a mess. Its official feature set includes a story-driven campaign, dynamic spellcasting and support for up to four players. Friendly fire is always on, so the same spell system that makes coordination interesting can also hurt or kill your friends. Solo play is supported, but the clearest case for the game is its chaotic group play.

How Magicka 2’s spellcasting shapes the experience

Steam describes Magicka 2 as an action-adventure game built around dynamic spellcasting and a story-driven campaign. Its Artifacts are options that customize gameplay. The store description points to experimentation as a central draw: players combine spells to deal with enemies, while the always-on friendly fire means a poorly aimed cast can hit an ally instead.

That design makes the game’s appeal depend on your group’s appetite for disorder. If accidental team damage sounds funny and you enjoy trying different spell combinations, the official feature description suggests a strong fit. If you want combat where teammates can act without risking one another, friendly fire is a significant drawback. These are feature-based expectations, not a claim based on hands-on testing.

Can you play Magicka 2 solo or with friends?

Solo and online co-op

Steam lists both single-player and co-op. The store description says levels and modes support up to four-player co-op, with hot join and checkpoints. That makes it possible for a group to join mid-session and gives the campaign a checkpoint structure; the available official descriptions do not specify campaign length or how difficulty changes for solo play.

Local play and Remote Play Together

Steam lists shared/split-screen play as well as Remote Play Together. Those are distinct options: shared/split-screen is the listed local-play mode, while Remote Play Together is a Steam feature for playing with friends remotely. Steam’s listing does not provide more detail here about setup or platform-specific restrictions, so check the live store page for your intended configuration.

What do Steam reviews say?

Steam’s English-language review panel showed “Mostly Positive,” with 71% positive ratings among 3,274 reviews when accessed in 2026. Its recent all-language panel showed “Overwhelmingly Negative,” with 6% positive among 384 reviews as of the 2026 access date. These are changing Steam user-review figures, not critic scores or a permanent consensus; the two panels also cover different review sets. Check the live Steam listing for current sentiment.

Check compatibility before buying

Steam lists Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements, but specifically warns that Magicka 2 is not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. Steam Deck compatibility is marked unsupported. Because those details can affect whether the game will run on your setup, verify the current requirements and compatibility notes on the live Steam page before purchasing.

Who should buy Magicka 2?

  • Consider it if: you want a story-driven action game to play with friends, like experimenting with spell combinations, and accept that friendly fire can turn a team fight into accidental infighting.
  • Think twice if: you dislike harming teammates, primarily want a solo experience with well-documented solo balance, or need confirmed compatibility with macOS Catalina or later or Steam Deck.

Magicka 2 is available digitally through Steam and Paradox’s official purchase page, which lists the base game and DLC. The available purchase information establishes digital routes, not physical-media availability. Paradox’s purchase page has the publisher’s current options.
