WLanHC.dll is associated with Wireless LAN Helper Classes, part of Windows wireless diagnostics and WLAN infrastructure. It works with Windows networking services and wireless troubleshooting features.

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications use the 32-bit system component in:
%windir%SysWOW64WLanHC.dll
That naming is counterintuitive: System32 normally contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Do not replace one with the other.

Public file inventories associate the file with Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Windows Operating System. They show versions from Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10-era builds, but the correct version depends on your exact Windows installation. Do not use a version table as proof that a downloaded copy matches your computer.
Causes by symptom

The wording alone does not identify the cause. In particular, “specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of WLanHC.dll is missing rather than the named file itself.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows components inconsistent. Start with Windows Update before attempting manual replacement.

Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Start the application or repeat the action that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If the error disappears after restarting, the missing component was likely restored or its dependencies were brought back into a consistent state. If Windows Update fails, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the most important repair sequence for a missing or corrupted WLanHC.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC uses that repaired source to scan and replace protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application or wireless feature again.

A successful result may say that SFC found corrupt files and repaired them. Restart and test again. If SFC says it found no integrity violations but the error remains, the problem may be application-specific, architectural, or caused by a missing dependency.

If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, install pending updates first and run the command again. Persistent DISM or SFC failures indicate a deeper Windows servicing or installation problem.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the primary repair path.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and verify the file
If WLanHC.dll disappeared suddenly, security software may have quarantined it. A quarantine event is only a possibility, not proof of a known false-positive campaign.
- Open your antivirus application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Threat history.
- Look for an entry involving
WLanHC.dll. - Note the detected path and the detection name.
- Do not restore the file solely because its filename looks correct.
- If it is in
%windir%System32or%windir%SysWOW64, inspect its properties in File Explorer. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Check that the signer is Microsoft and view the signature details.
- Run a full security scan if the signature is missing, invalid, or the file is in an unexpected folder.
If the file is restored from quarantine and its Microsoft signature verifies correctly, restart and test again. If the antivirus identifies the file as altered or malicious, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.
Fix 4: Confirm the correct 32-bit or 64-bit component
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not use the same system-file view as a 64-bit application. This matters when an error appears in only one older program.
Check the two standard locations in File Explorer:
C:WindowsSystem32WLanHC.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64WLanHC.dll
The Windows folder may have a different name if the operating system was installed elsewhere. Type %windir% into File Explorer’s address bar to open the correct Windows directory.

Do not copy a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, or a 32-bit file into System32. Do not assume that matching the filename or approximate file size makes a replacement safe. DISM and SFC are designed to restore the correct Windows component for the installation.
If only a 32-bit application fails and Windows networking works normally, check whether that application is old or damaged. Repair or reinstall it from its developer’s official installer after completing Windows repair.
Fix 5: Separate a WLAN driver problem from a Windows-file problem
A wireless adapter driver can cause dropped connections, missing Wi-Fi controls, or a device error. It is not a general fix for a missing Windows WLanHC.dll.
Check the adapter:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the wireless adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and read Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and driver status.
- If Windows reports a device problem, select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
If automatic search finds nothing, obtain the driver from the computer manufacturer or wireless-adapter manufacturer. Avoid driver packages from unrelated download sites. If the adapter was recently updated and wireless stopped working, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver, when that button is available.

Fix 6: Repair the application if only one program fails
WLanHC.dll is a Windows component, but an application can still fail because its installation is damaged or it is requesting a component incorrectly.

- If Windows networking, diagnostics, and several applications show problems, treat it as a Windows repair issue.
- If only one older program fails while Wi-Fi and other applications work, treat it as an application issue.
- If a game fails, use its launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or equivalent option.
- For a conventional application, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the application, choose Advanced options if available, and select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer.
Do not place a downloaded WLanHC.dll beside the application executable. That can hide the underlying installation problem and introduce an incompatible or modified binary.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the appropriate registration interfaces. It does not restore a missing file, repair corruption, fix Windows component servicing, or resolve every “module not found” message.
Although some public file inventories show registration-related exports for WLanHC.dll, Microsoft does not instruct ordinary users to register this Windows component. Running commands such as these is therefore not a supported general remedy:
regsvr32 WLanHC.dll
regsvr32 %windir%System32WLanHC.dll
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor or Microsoft specifically instructs you to register a particular DLL and provides the correct architecture-specific procedure.

Fix 8: Use Windows repair options when DISM and SFC fail
If Windows Update, DISM, and SFC do not restore the component, preserve your files and move to recovery options.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
- Restart and test
WLanHC.dllagain.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. Microsoft describes this process in its repair-reinstall guidance.
If that option is unavailable, consider System Restore if a suitable restore point exists. A Windows repair installation using installation media is another escalation path. Reset this PC or recovery media may be appropriate when the installation or disk is extensively damaged, but back up important files first. Microsoft lists these choices in its Windows recovery options.

Manual replacement should be a narrowly qualified last resort using a known-good copy from the same Windows build, after examining DISM and SFC results. A random download is not a known-good source.

Avoid DLL archive sites and search-result links offering WLanHC.dll. A downloaded copy may contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, be altered, or fail because another dependency is the real problem.
The safe sources are Windows servicing, Windows Update, the original Windows installation media, and Microsoft recovery tools. There is no official standalone Microsoft WLanHC.dll redistributable intended for manual download.

The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. Verify its location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone. A copy in an application folder or an unsigned copy deserves investigation.

Only when Device Manager or wireless diagnostics shows an adapter or driver fault. A driver reinstall does not generally restore a missing Windows system file.
Does regsvr32 wlanhc.dll fix the error?
Usually not. Registration is not the same as restoring or repairing a Windows component, and it is not a routine Microsoft-supported fix for this file.
What if the file exists but says it is not designed to run on Windows?
