wlidprov.dll Missing: Repair Windows or the Legacy App

wlidprov.dll is a genuine Microsoft file commonly identified as Microsoft Account Provider. If Windows reports that wlidprov.dll is missing, corrupt, or not designed to run on Windows, repair the Windows component first when the path is under System32 or SysWOW64. If an old game mentions Games for Windows–LIVE or Windows Live ID, repair that legacy installation instead.

Do not download a random copy of wlidprov.dll and place it in a Windows folder. The wrong architecture, version, signature, or dependency can create a second problem without repairing the original one.

Check the error before changing anything

Write down the exact message and the executable named in the error. The path is especially useful:

  • C:WindowsSystem32wlidprov.dll usually indicates the Windows system copy.
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64wlidprov.dll is normally the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows.
  • Common FilesMicrosoft SharedWindows Live points toward an older Windows Live ID or Games for Windows–LIVE installation.
  • A message appearing only when launching an old game usually points toward that game’s legacy prerequisite rather than a general Windows failure.

Common messages include:

The program can't start because wlidprov.dll is missing from your computer.
wlidprov.dll was not found.

A program can also report that the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or contains an error. If the named file exists but the message says “the specified module could not be found,” another dependent DLL may be missing.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates

Start with Windows servicing if the error names System32 or SysWOW64.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
  6. Launch the affected program again.

Windows system files can be replaced or repaired as part of normal servicing. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a replacement file.

Fix 2: Repair the Windows component with DISM and SFC

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  5. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the program again.

Successful SFC results commonly say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart once and run the same DISM and SFC sequence again. If DISM cannot find source files, use Windows Update first, then repair Windows from matching installation media rather than obtaining wlidprov.dll from a third-party archive.

If the file exists and only this protected file appears damaged, you can run a targeted check from an elevated Command Prompt:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32wlidprov.dll

Use the SysWOW64 path instead when that is the copy named by the error.

Running these commands manually is useful, but repeated scans can be tedious when you are still hunting the cause. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this fix.

Fix 3: Repair the old Windows Live or GFWL installation

Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus time to locate the original installer

Use this branch when the error mentions:

  • Games for Windows–LIVE
  • Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant
  • Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace
  • Common FilesMicrosoft SharedWindows Live
  • An older game that used online sign-in

Historical versions of Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant and the Games for Windows–LIVE Redistributable installed their own provider files. A legacy installer also used the 32-bit regsvr32 utility to register its provider.

First remove the damaged package:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. In Programs and Features, look for entries such as:
  4. Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant
  5. Microsoft Games for Windows–LIVE Redistributable
  6. Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace
  7. Select the relevant entry and choose Uninstall.
  8. Restart Windows.

Next, reinstall the prerequisite from the game’s original installer or from a package that is still available through an authoritative Microsoft or vendor source. Old Windows Live download pages are retired or inconsistently available, so do not assume that an old search result is current or safe.

For a Steam game:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Select Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for the verification to finish, then launch the game.

If the game has a redist, support, or prerequisite folder in its original installation media, run the included installer as administrator. Right-click the installer, choose Run as administrator, and restart after it completes.

When regsvr32 applies

Do not use regsvr32 as a general missing-DLL repair. It is appropriate only when a legitimate legacy Windows Live installer specifically requires COM registration.

On 64-bit Windows, a legacy 32-bit installer may call:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe

Do not manually register a DLL downloaded from the internet. If the registration command fails, repair or reinstall the Windows Live or GFWL package that owns the file instead.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

A genuine file can be quarantined after a detection, but a familiar filename is not proof that a file is safe. Verify its path and Microsoft signature before restoring anything.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review entries involving wlidprov.dll.
  6. Expand an entry to see its path and action.
  7. If the file is in the expected Windows directory and is identified as Microsoft-signed, follow your security policy before choosing Restore or Allow on device.
  8. If it is in a temporary folder, a user-writable application folder, or an unexpected directory, do not restore it. Run a full scan and investigate the program that created it.

After restoring a confirmed system file, run DISM and SFC again, then restart.

Fix 5: Confirm the 32-bit and 64-bit locations

Time needed: 5 minutes

On 64-bit Windows, both of these locations can be correct:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:WindowsSystem32wlidprov.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64wlidprov.dll

Despite the confusing names, System32 normally contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit binaries used through Windows’ WOW64 compatibility layer.

A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit provider. A 64-bit application needs the 64-bit provider. Never replace one with the other, and never copy the same file into both directories.

To check your Windows architecture:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > About.
  2. Find System type.
  3. Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
  4. Compare that information with the path named in the error.

The correct repair is to service the owning Windows build or reinstall the legacy application package. A file that has a newer-looking version number is not automatically compatible.

Fix 6: Repair the affected application

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

If only one program reports the error and the DLL path is inside that program’s directory, repair that program rather than Windows.

  6. Test the application.
  7. If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, choose Reset only after checking what application data it removes.
  8. If neither option exists, uninstall the application, restart, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.

For an old game, use its original prerequisite installer or verify its files through the store that supplied it. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a direct fix for wlidprov.dll alone.

Fix 7: Check recent drivers or system changes

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A device driver is not the normal owner of wlidprov.dll. However, if the failure started immediately after a driver or system utility change, undo that change.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the recent change.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Use Roll Back Driver if it is available and the problem began after that update.
  7. Otherwise select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows and test the affected program.

Do not expect Device Manager to install wlidprov.dll. It is useful here only for reversing a related system change.

If you regularly have to identify which of many devices has an outdated driver, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show what it identifies; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is optional. For this DLL, repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected legacy application remains the definitive path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also try System Restore:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally preserves personal files but rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs.

If none of the repairs work

If Windows still reports a damaged system copy after DISM and SFC:

  • Check the disk for errors and review Windows Update failures.
  • Run a full malware scan.
  • Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
  • On supported Windows 11 installations, open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now.
  • If that option is unavailable, use Windows installation media or another supported recovery option after backing up important data.

A reset or clean installation can remove applications and, depending on the selected option, personal data. Treat it as a final recovery step.

What usually caused the error

Symptom Most likely cause Correct repair

The file exists but a dependent module is missing Another dependency is unavailable Repair the owning application and its prerequisites
The failure began after a driver change System change or rollback issue Device Manager rollback or System Restore

FAQ

Is wlidprov.dll legitimate?

Yes. It is a real Microsoft DLL commonly described as Microsoft Account Provider. Its expected Windows locations are System32 and, on 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64. An older Windows Live installation can also contain its own copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download wlidprov.dll from a DLL website?

Normally, no. Random copies can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, mismatch your Windows build, or fail because another dependency is missing. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the application’s official installer, or the original legacy game’s prerequisite package.

Is `wlidprov.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No. Do not install those runtimes merely because this filename is missing. They may be required by a particular game or application, but they are not the normal source of this Microsoft Account Provider file.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Only when a genuine legacy Windows Live installer requires registration. It is not a universal repair command, and it should never be used to register an arbitrary replacement DLL.

Why are there copies in both System32 and SysWOW64?

They serve different application architectures on 64-bit Windows. System32 normally contains the 64-bit copy, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit copy. Do not swap or duplicate them.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if SFC repairs the file but the error returns?

Check disk health, Windows Update, antivirus quarantine, and malware. If the failure is limited to an old game, remove and reinstall its Windows Live or GFWL prerequisite rather than repeatedly replacing the Windows copy.
