wmicookr.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), particularly WMI performance data. If Windows says wmicookr.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or could not be loaded, repair Windows before attempting to download a replacement file.

The most reliable repair is to install pending Windows updates, run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt, run System File Checker, and restart. If only one older application reports the error, repair or reinstall that application after confirming which program is requesting the DLL.

This file is mainly encountered when:

  • An older Windows component or legacy application expects it.
  • A system file was removed, quarantined, or damaged.
  • An old program has an incorrect dependency.
  • A 32-bit application is looking for a 32-bit WMI component.
  • WMI or the Windows component store has been damaged.

It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX component, .NET runtime, or general-purpose game DLL.

File identity and expected location

Property Details
File wmicookr.dll
Description WMI
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Product Microsoft Windows Operating System
Function WMI performance-data support
Typical Windows location %windir%System32wbem
32-bit WMI location on 64-bit Windows %windir%SysWOW64wbem

The exact presence and location can vary with Windows architecture, build, servicing state, and the application making the request. Do not assume that every current Windows installation contains a standalone file with this exact name.

WMIADAP.exe is related but is not the same thing as wmicookr.dll. Microsoft documents WMIADAP as an operating-system component installed under %windir%System32wbem; third-party file metadata has associated wmicookr.dll as an internal or original filename in some Windows releases. The WMI service and WMI repository are separate parts of Windows, and wmic.exe is an unrelated command-line utility name.

First: identify what is actually failing

Before changing files, determine whether Windows itself or one legacy application is producing the message.

Check when the error appears

Note whether the message appears:

  • Immediately after signing in.
  • When opening a particular program or game.
  • When starting a monitoring, administration, or hardware utility.
  • During Windows startup or shutdown.
  • After an update, security scan, cleanup operation, or application installation.

If the error appears only when launching one program, that program may be requesting the DLL incorrectly even if Windows system files are intact.

Find the calling program

Use these methods to identify the executable:

  1. Write down the exact error text and the time it appeared.
  2. Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  3. Select Startup apps and look for recently installed or unfamiliar software.
  4. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  5. Sort by installation date if available and inspect programs installed shortly before the problem began.
  6. Temporarily close nonessential background applications and test the affected program again.

For more advanced investigation, Microsoft Sysinternals Process Monitor can show file-load activity, but use it only if you are comfortable filtering process events. Search for wmicookr.dll, then inspect the process name and requested path. Do not download a replacement DLL merely because an application requests it from its own folder.

Check the actual path

If a file with this name exists, right-click it and choose Properties. Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Location field.
  • The Digital Signatures tab.
  • The signer and signature status.
  • The file’s version information.

A copy under a Windows WMI directory is more consistent with a Windows component than a copy in a random temporary folder or an unrelated application directory. However, location alone does not prove that a file is safe. Do not call every copy outside System32wbem malware without checking its signature and parent process.

Fix 1: install Windows updates and restart

A failed update or incomplete servicing operation can leave protected Windows files unavailable.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Test the program that displayed the error.

If the error started immediately after a failed update, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the available Windows Update troubleshooter. On some Windows builds, the path may instead be under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

If updates fail repeatedly, do not keep deleting Windows Update folders or copying DLLs. Continue with DISM and SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of wmicookr.dll.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and restores valid copies from that repaired store.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Launch the affected application again.

How to interpret the result

If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them, restart and test the program.

If SFC reports that it did not find any integrity violations, the problem may be an application-specific dependency, an architecture mismatch, or a file being requested from the wrong directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC says it could not repair some files:

  1. Run DISM again.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run sfc /scannow again.
  4. Review the repair details in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

Do not promise that SFC will always restore this particular DLL. SFC can repair files only when the required component data is available and the Windows installation is repairable.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using matching Windows installation media. The source must match the installed edition and build:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:Sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess

Replace X: with the installation-media drive letter. The correct image index may also be required, depending on the media. Using an unmatched source can fail or repair against the wrong Windows image, so use official installation media that corresponds to the installed Windows edition and build.

Running DISM and SFC manually is the safest first approach, but it can be difficult to determine which repair changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace application-specific repair when a particular program owns the dependency.

Fix 3: check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware

Security software may quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected system file. There is no established wmicookr.dll-specific false-positive campaign, so treat quarantine as a possibility rather than proof that the file was safe.

Check protection history

Windows Security steps are:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  3. Open Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an event involving wmicookr.dll, WMI, or the application that reports the error.
  6. Open the event details and verify the detected path.

Restore a quarantined file only when the security product identifies it as safe and the file is in the expected Windows directory. Do not whitelist an unexplained copy just to make an application launch.

After checking quarantine:

  1. Return to Virus & threat protection.
  2. Select Scan options.
  3. Run a Full scan.
  4. If you find suspicious processes, persistence, or altered system files, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
  5. After the scan, run DISM and SFC again.

A file in an unusual directory, lacking a valid Microsoft signature, or accompanied by suspicious processes should be investigated as possible tampering rather than copied into a system folder.

Fix 4: repair or reinstall the affected application

If the error appears only with one program, Windows may be intact and the application may have an incorrect dependency or a private, incompatible DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the built-in repair option

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the affected application.
  3. Select the ** three-dot menu**.
  4. Choose Advanced options if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Test the application.
  7. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it can remove application data or settings.

For older Control Panel programs:

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type:
appwiz.cpl
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the program.
  3. Choose Repair, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.

For games, use the launcher’s Verify files, Repair, or equivalent feature. If the application vendor supplied a separate installer, reinstall it from the vendor’s official source.

Do not copy a system DLL into the application directory unless the application vendor specifically requires that exact version and architecture. A private copy can cause the loader to use an incompatible file instead of the Windows component.

Fix 5: check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Windows has directory names that are counterintuitive:

  • System32 contains native system components. On 64-bit Windows, these are normally 64-bit components.
  • SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.

A 32-bit application may look for a 32-bit WMI component even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A DLL with the right filename but the wrong architecture can produce errors such as:

  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Bad image.”
  • “The entry point was not found.”
  • “This application cannot run on your PC.”

To identify the application architecture, check the application vendor’s documentation or inspect the executable with a trusted developer tool. Do not solve an architecture mismatch by downloading a second DLL from an unofficial repository.

If only a 32-bit legacy program fails:

  1. Repair or reinstall that program.
  2. Install the vendor’s current build, if available.
  3. Check whether the program has a 64-bit version.
  4. Test it in a supported compatibility mode only when the vendor recommends that approach.
  5. Keep Windows system directories unchanged.

Fix 6: update or reinstall related drivers only when hardware software is involved

wmicookr.dll is not normally repaired by a graphics, audio, chipset, or printer driver reinstall. However, an old hardware-monitoring utility or vendor management program may be the application calling WMI.

If the error began with a hardware utility:

  1. Open Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
  2. Expand the category related to the device.
  3. Right-click the device and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
  5. Obtain a compatible driver from the device manufacturer or Windows Update.
  6. In Device Manager, choose Update driver.
  7. Select Search automatically for drivers, or use Browse my computer for drivers when you have an official package.
  8. Restart Windows and test the utility.

Do not use Device Manager to remove a device merely because a DLL message appears. Driver changes are appropriate only when the affected application is clearly tied to that hardware.

When several hardware drivers need checking, manually identifying the correct package for each device can involve hunting through model numbers and Windows architectures. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the free scan shows detected issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Use the hardware manufacturer’s package when the device is business-critical or has specialized requirements.

Fix 7: check WMI health if other WMI functions fail

A missing DLL and a damaged WMI repository are different problems. Do not reset the repository simply because wmicookr.dll is missing.

Investigate WMI only when you also see symptoms such as:

  • WMI queries failing in multiple programs.
  • Monitoring tools showing no system data.
  • Management applications reporting repository errors.
  • Services or scripts failing when they query WMI.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
winmgmt /verifyrepository

If Windows reports that the repository is consistent, do not salvage or reset it merely to address the DLL message.

If Windows reports inconsistency, run:

winmgmt /salvagerepository

This checks the repository and rebuilds it if necessary. Restart Windows and test the affected WMI tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

winmgmt /resetrepository is more disruptive and should not be a first-line repair. Use it only with appropriate technical guidance and a clear WMI repository problem. Repairing the repository will not recreate an arbitrary missing Windows file if the component store itself is damaged.

Fix 8: use Windows recovery when normal repair fails

Use recovery options when DISM, SFC, updates, and application repair do not resolve the problem.

System Restore

System Restore is appropriate when:

  • The error began after a known update or software installation.
  • A restore point exists from before the problem.
  • You have saved current work and understand which applications may be affected.

To try it:

  1. Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore is not a substitute for repairing a damaged component store and does not replace personal-file backups.

In-place Windows repair

If Windows remains usable but system repairs repeatedly fail, an in-place repair using matching official Windows installation media can replace Windows components while preserving personal files and applications, depending on the selected options and installation state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up important files first. Confirm the Windows edition and architecture, then use installation media that matches the installed release. If the repair cannot preserve applications, stop and verify the options before proceeding.

Reset or clean installation

A Windows reset or clean installation should be a last resort. Before using one:

  • Back up personal files.
  • Export browser data and application settings.
  • Confirm that you have installation media and activation information where needed.
  • Check storage health.
  • Make sure the problem is not caused by malware or a failing drive.

What not to do

Do not download wmicookr.dll from a DLL website

There is no verified Microsoft standalone download package named wmicookr.dll. Generic DLL download sites can provide:

  • Malware or modified files.
  • The wrong Windows build.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • A file with an invalid or missing Microsoft signature.
  • A replacement that hides the real component-store or application problem.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, or the affected application’s official installer instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command, and there is no verified evidence that wmicookr.dll should be registered this way.

Do not run:

regsvr32 wmicookr.dll

unless Microsoft or the relevant software vendor specifically instructs you to do so. Running it can produce another error without restoring the missing component.

Do not enable random Windows features

WMI is an operating-system management facility, not a feature that should be fixed by randomly enabling legacy components in Turn Windows features on or off. Do not enable optional features merely because an error mentions WMI.

Frequently asked questions

Is wmicookr.dll safe?

A genuine copy in the expected Windows WMI directory, signed by Microsoft, is consistent with a Windows component. A file with the same name in an unusual location needs path, signature, and process investigation. Run a full security scan if anything looks suspicious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Visual C++ Redistributable install this file?

No. wmicookr.dll is a Windows WMI component, not a Visual C++ runtime file. Reinstalling Visual C++ is not the normal repair.

Will DirectX or .NET fix the error?

Not normally. DirectX and .NET are separate technologies. Start with Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and repair of the application reporting the message.

Is this relevant to Windows 11?

It can be, particularly when Windows 11 runs older software that expects historical WMI files or uses an incorrect dependency. Do not assume every modern Windows installation contains a standalone copy with this exact name. Repair the operating system and the calling application instead.

Should I copy the file from another computer?

No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, edition, architecture, or servicing baseline. Use DISM, SFC, matching official installation media, or the application’s official installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the message says “entry point not found” instead of “missing”?

That often indicates a version or architecture mismatch rather than a simple absent file. Repair the calling application, confirm whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit, and run DISM followed by SFC. Do not replace the DLL with an arbitrary version.

What is the best repair order?

Install Windows updates, run DISM, run SFC, restart, check antivirus quarantine, identify the calling program, and repair or reinstall that program. Investigate WMI repository health only when broader WMI functions are also failing.
