1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePirateFi was a real free-to-play game that appeared on Steam on February 6, 2025 and was removed around February 12 after users and researchers found suspected malware in its builds. The payload was later linked to the Vidar information-stealing malware, which can target browser cookies, credentials, and active account sessions.
That does not mean every person who downloaded PirateFi was infected or had an account stolen. But anyone who launched it should treat the computer as potentially compromised, secure accounts from a different device, and consider a clean Windows installation if scans are inconclusive or suspicious activity continues.

The short version
PirateFi was presented as a low-poly, pirate-themed survival game from a developer listed as Seaworth Interactive. It was free, multiplayer-capable, and distributed through Steam. Shortly after its release, users reported antivirus detections and suspicious files. Valve removed the malicious builds and warned affected players that launching the game likely executed them.
Early detections included Trojan.Win32.Lazzzy.gen. Later analysis connected samples to Vidar, an infostealer commonly associated with browser data and account theft. Valve advised users to run a full antivirus scan, look for unexpected software, and consider reinstalling the operating system. Valve’s reproduced warning did not establish that every player was infected.

What happened, and when
- February 6, 2025: PirateFi reportedly launched on Steam.
- February 8: A Steam user publicly reported an antivirus warning and questioned the game’s authenticity.
- February 9: Community analysis discussed suspicious files, a temporary AppData location, and possible cookie-stealing behavior.
- February 12: Valve removed the malicious builds or delisted the game and sent warnings to affected users.
- February 13–18: Coverage expanded, and later analysis connected the payload to Vidar.
Contemporaneous reporting from TechCrunch, Gizmodo, and PC Gamer documented the incident.
What was PirateFi?
PirateFi was marketed as a free-to-play, early-stage or beta survival game with solo and multiplayer play. Community records identified its Steam app ID as 3476470, and the store listed Seaworth Interactive as its developer.
The game’s presentation raised additional concerns. Reports found that its promotional screenshots and video appeared to be copied from Easy Survival RPG. That does not, by itself, prove that an executable is malicious, but stolen marketing material and an unverifiable developer history are meaningful warning signs when combined with antivirus detections and an external recruitment lure.
What the malware did
Initial antivirus reports used the detection name Trojan.Win32.Lazzzy.gen. That is a detection label, not necessarily the definitive name of the malware family. Community examination reported a suspicious payload unpacking into a temporary AppData directory and using the filename Howard.exe.
Later technical reporting associated the samples with Vidar, an infostealer. The reported objective was to collect browser cookies, credentials, and other account data. TechCrunch’s later analysis described the connection to Vidar and its information-stealing capabilities.

Cookie theft matters because a stolen browser session can sometimes let an attacker access an already-authenticated account without immediately needing the password. The risk can include email, messaging, gaming, social-media, payment, and other browser-accessible services. Password changes alone may not invalidate stolen sessions, so users should also revoke active sessions, remove unfamiliar devices, and reset MFA or security settings when appropriate.
The evidence supports exposure risk, not a claim that every player’s accounts were taken over. The malware may not have executed successfully on every system, and the available reporting does not provide a verified total of successful infections.
How did people find and download it?
PirateFi combined several effective social-engineering elements:
- It was free.
- It targeted a familiar genre with a large audience.
- It appeared inside Steam, which gave the download more credibility than an unknown executable link.
- Its store media reportedly used material copied from another game.
- A Telegram account reportedly advertised a supposed in-game chat moderator position paying $17 per hour and directed applicants toward PirateFi.
A reader quoted by PCMag suspected the Telegram account might be automated because its responses arrived with unusually consistent timing. That observation was not independently established as proof that the account was automated or AI-operated.
The broader lesson is more reliable: a job offer, giveaway, beta invitation, or moderator role that requires installing an unfamiliar game is a high-risk download pattern, especially when the recruitment happens through Telegram, Discord, or another external channel.

How did malware get onto Steam?
The public record does not show that Steam itself was hacked, nor does it conclusively prove that the developer account was compromised. Valve’s warning said that builds containing suspected malware had been uploaded by the developer’s Steam account.
Several explanations remain possible:
- A malicious publisher intentionally submitted a game as a distribution vehicle.
- An apparently legitimate developer account was compromised.
- A legitimate-looking project was submitted with malicious build files.
- A later update replaced a benign build with a malicious one.
None of those scenarios has been publicly confirmed as the exact route. Security researcher analysis reported by TechCrunch leaned toward PirateFi being purpose-built for distribution rather than a normal game later infected, but that remains an expert assessment rather than a public Valve postmortem.
Steam hosting is therefore not the same thing as a guarantee that every executable has been exhaustively audited for malicious behavior. Store review and platform security can reduce risk without eliminating it.
How many people were affected?
The available figures describe different things and should not be combined:
- A SteamDB-based estimate cited by Gizmodo suggested roughly 800 to 1,500 downloads.
- PC Gamer cited a separate figure of more than 7,000 players.
The 7,000-plus number should not be presented as confirmed downloads, launches, infections, or account compromises. Valve has not provided a public infection count in the cited material. The safest description is that hundreds or more users may have been exposed, with the exact number unknown.

What affected users should do
If you downloaded PirateFi but never launched it
- Do not open the game, its executable, or any leftover installer.
- Uninstall it through Steam.
- Before deleting remnants, record suspicious filenames or antivirus detections if you may need them for incident reporting.
- Run a full scan with Microsoft Defender or another trusted, updated antivirus product. Microsoft’s security tools are documented at Microsoft’s official Windows security page.
- Check installed applications, startup items, browser extensions, and recently modified files.
- If any executable ran, or you are unsure whether it did, change important passwords from a known-clean device, revoke active sessions, and enable multifactor authentication.
If the game genuinely never ran, the risk is lower. Uninstalling it is not proof of compromise if it did execute, because an infostealer may copy data before removal.
If you launched PirateFi
- Disconnect the computer from the internet. Disable Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet.
- Do not use that computer to change passwords, access banking, open email, or sign in to work accounts.
- From a clean device, change the email password first, followed by Steam, Microsoft, Google, Discord, Telegram, social-media, payment, and other high-value accounts.
- Revoke active sessions and unfamiliar devices. Reset MFA methods, recovery codes, API tokens, or app passwords if an account supports them.
- Enable MFA, preferably with an authenticator app or security key.
- Review financial and account activity and contact your bank or payment provider immediately if you see suspicious transactions.
- Run an offline or full antivirus scan. Microsoft Defender Offline is one option described by Microsoft Support.
- If scans are inconclusive, suspicious activity continues, or the computer contains sensitive data, back up only irreplaceable personal documents and perform a clean Windows installation.
- After reinstalling, change passwords again from the clean system and restore only trusted files. Do not restore browser profiles, unknown archives, scripts, or executables.
A clean reinstall is the most decisive consumer-level remediation, but it is not automatically required for every person who downloaded the game. It becomes much more reasonable after execution, inconclusive scans, persistent account abuse, or use of the PC for sensitive work.
Warning signs to take seriously
- No credible developer website, history, or social presence.
- Stolen screenshots, trailers, or descriptions.
- A generic asset-flip presentation combined with pressure to install quickly.
- Job, giveaway, beta-key, or moderator offers requiring a game download.
- Antivirus detections or unexpected prompts.
- Unusual background processes, new startup entries, or unexplained browser extensions.
- Reviews that appear unusually repetitive or rushed.
None of these signs alone proves malware. New independent games can have small online footprints, and antivirus tools can produce false positives. The correct approach is cumulative risk assessment: multiple warning signs should stop you from launching the software until its provenance is clear.
Valve’s account-security guidance also warns that Steam-targeting malware can be disguised as pirated software, cheats, fake demos or betas, and gaming utilities. It notes that some threats may be customized to evade common antivirus detection.

What this incident says about Steam security
PirateFi does not prove that Steam was breached or that every game on the platform is unsafe. It does show the limit of platform trust: a store can deliver an executable after accepting a title without guaranteeing that the executable is harmless in every circumstance.
Users should treat Steam as safer than an arbitrary file-sharing link, not as an absolute safety certificate. A new game is not suspicious merely because it comes from an unknown indie developer. But a new developer combined with stolen assets, external recruitment pressure, antivirus alerts, and unexplained behavior deserves substantially more scrutiny.
