wmipsess.dll Load Errors: Restore the Windows WMI Component Safely

By VGSources Team 11 min read

“The program can’t start because wmipsess.dll is missing from your computer” means Windows or an application cannot load wmipsess.dll. This file is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component called the WMI Provider for Sessions and Connections, so the safest repair is to restore Windows components rather than download a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you

Use the description that best matches what you are seeing:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The file is missing after an update, crash, or sudden shutdown: install pending Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
  • Windows Security recently quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The file exists in System32wbem but the error continues: check its Microsoft signature, dependencies, and WMI-related errors.
  • The message says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing even if wmipsess.dll is present.
  • The file is in a game folder, download folder, temporary folder, or user profile: treat it as a possible fake or unwanted copy and scan the computer.
  • The problem affects WMI operations rather than one application: investigate WMI registration and event logs. Do not blindly rebuild the WMI repository.
  • DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: use System Restore, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, or installation media.

Do not begin by copying wmipsess.dll from a DLL archive into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. That can create an architecture mismatch, leave WMI registration broken, or introduce malicious code.

What wmipsess.dll does

wmipsess.dll implements Microsoft’s WMI Provider for Sessions and Connections. The provider supplies WMI information about local and remote server sessions and connections in the RootCIMV2 namespace.

  • Win32_SessionConnection

Microsoft identifies Wmipsess.dll as the implementation of this provider in its Session Provider documentation and related Win32_ServerSession documentation.

WMI providers are loaded by WMI provider host processes. They also require registration with WMI and COM metadata, which is why copying a DLL into a folder is not equivalent to repairing the provider. Microsoft explains this process in its documentation about registering a WMI provider.

The normal 64-bit Windows path is:

%windir%System32wbemwmipsess.dll

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes can be affected by file-system redirection and may use the corresponding 32-bit system location, commonly:

%windir%SysWOW64wbemwmipsess.dll

Do not assume that either copy is correct without checking the affected installation. Microsoft describes this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

What the error wording tells you

Windows may display one of several loader-style messages:

  • “The program can’t start because wmipsess.dll is missing from your computer.” Windows could not find the file where the requesting process expected it.
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because wmipsess.dll was not found.” The application could not resolve the requested module.
  • “There was a problem starting wmipsess.dll. The specified module could not be found.” The named DLL may be present, but a dependent module may be missing.
  • “wmipsess.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” The file may be damaged, incompatible, incorrectly replaced, or failing signature validation.

These messages are not an official exhaustive list for this file. Their wording varies with the Windows version, application, loader failure, and whether the problem is the file itself or a dependency.

An application can mention wmipsess.dll even though it is a Windows component. The application may query WMI for network sessions, shared connections, or server information. It may also be reporting a failure that occurred in a Windows dependency rather than a file supplied by the application.

Before repairing, identify the real file

Check the path

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Click the address bar.
  3. Enter:

text
%windir%System32wbem

  1. Look for wmipsess.dll.
  2. If you use 64-bit Windows and the failing process is 32-bit, also inspect:

text
%windir%SysWOW64wbem

A copy in one of these Windows WMI directories deserves further verification. A copy in a user profile, Downloads folder, temporary directory, or an application’s unrelated folder is not automatically genuine.

Check the publisher and signature

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the signature and click Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

Also check the Details tab for the description WMI Provider for Sessions and Connections. File names and descriptions alone do not prove authenticity, and Windows builds can have different file versions, sizes, and hashes. There is no universal version or size that applies to every Windows installation.

If the signature is missing, invalid, or identifies an unexpected publisher, do not replace or restore the file manually. Run a Microsoft Defender scan and continue with Windows component repair.

Check Protection history

If the file disappeared recently:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review detections involving wmipsess.dll.
  6. Expand the detection to see its original path and threat details.

Restore a quarantined file only when its original Windows path, Microsoft signature, and security status are confirmed. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine detection can expose the computer if the file was actually malicious. If the detection is unclear, leave the file quarantined and run a full scan.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates first

An incomplete or damaged update is a common reason for a Windows-owned DLL to disappear or become inconsistent.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart Windows.

Microsoft provides the current steps in its guide to installing Windows updates.

After restarting, open the application that displayed the error. If it starts normally, the update repaired or replaced the Windows component. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading the DLL.

Fix 2: Repair the Windows component store with DISM

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source for protected system files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:

cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows if DISM reports that a restart is required.

The scan can pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window merely because the progress appears unchanged.

A successful result normally says that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that it could not find source files, use a matching Windows repair source only if you have appropriate installation media or a known-good source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with the actual repair-source path. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough for DISM to use it. Do not point DISM at a random Windows folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This manual process can involve identifying the correct build and repeating repairs without knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows repair issues and show what it finds; its repair functions are handled by the full version, but it is not required and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC tools remain the appropriate first-line repair.

If DISM fails, note the exact error and continue to SFC once. A failed DISM operation may still leave enough information in the logs to guide later repair.

Fix 3: Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, run SFC in the same elevated Command Prompt.

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart and repeat from an elevated Command Prompt. If necessary, run the scan from Windows Recovery Environment.

Microsoft documents the DISM and SFC repair sequence.

Check the repair log

If SFC reports unrepairable files:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Event Viewer and open it.
  3. Review Windows Logs > System for servicing or component errors.
  4. Examine the SFC details in:

text
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log

Do not replace individual files based only on a search result. The correct file must match the Windows installation, architecture, servicing state, and WMI registration.

Fix 4: Determine whether a dependency is missing

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean wmipsess.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency.

To narrow this down:

  1. Record the complete error text.
  2. Note the application that displays it.
  3. Check Event Viewer:
  4. Right-click Start.
  5. Select Event Viewer.
  6. Inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System.
  7. Look for an event at the same time as the failure.
  8. Record any additional DLL name, application path, or error code.

Do not install a Visual C++ package, DirectX package, or .NET release solely because a generic DLL page recommends it. No particular runtime has been verified as uniquely responsible for wmipsess.dll. Repair a runtime only when the application’s own log or event record identifies that runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the application owns the failing DLL rather than Windows, use its official installer or repair option. A game launcher’s Verify files command can repair files owned by that game, but it will not normally repair a Windows WMI provider.

Fix 5: Check WMI without rebuilding it blindly

If wmipsess.dll exists, has a valid Microsoft signature, and Windows still reports WMI-related failures, the problem may be WMI registration or repository damage.

Start with a basic WMI check:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Computer Management and open it.
  3. Expand Services and Applications.
  4. Select WMI Control.
  5. Right-click it and select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for a functioning WMI status.

You can also test whether a WMI query works:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows PowerShell.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:

powershell
Get-CimInstance Win32_ServerSession

If the command returns session information, the provider may be functioning and the original application may have a separate dependency or configuration issue. If it returns a WMI error, record the exact message.

Do not run repository-reset commands or delete WMI repository files as a routine fix. Rebuilding the repository can remove registrations and create additional problems. Microsoft’s provider registration guidance explains why WMI providers require more than a copied DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

regsvr32 wmipsess.dll is also not a general repair. Some COM DLLs support self-registration, but a WMI provider requires WMI and COM metadata. Running regsvr32 against a missing, wrong-architecture, or already registered provider can produce another error without repairing the underlying issue.

Fix 6: Check architecture and application paths

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit processes can resolve system files through different redirected locations. A 32-bit application may fail if it has been given an incompatible DLL copied from another system.

Check the affected application:

  1. Right-click its shortcut.
  2. Select Open file location.
  3. Right-click the application executable and select Properties.
  4. Review the Details tab and the application’s documentation for architecture information.
  5. Do not copy a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL manually to force a match.

The correct solution is normally Windows servicing, an official application installer, or an in-place repair using matching Windows media. Microsoft explains the relevant redirection behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when logs identify a driver

A driver is not the normal source of wmipsess.dll, and Device Manager cannot replace a Windows WMI provider. Consider driver work only when the application log, Event Viewer, or a recent hardware change points to a network, storage, chipset, or other device driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check for driver warnings:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories containing the suspected device.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  6. Read the Device status message.
  7. Use Driver > Update Driver or download the driver from the computer or device manufacturer.
  8. Restart Windows and retest.

Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of many drivers is stale can create a second problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; the full version performs driver installation, but it is optional and should not replace Windows Update or the manufacturer’s driver when those identify the cause.

If Device Manager shows no related warning and the event log names no driver, return to DISM, SFC, WMI diagnostics, and application repair instead.

Fix 8: Repair or reinstall the affected application

If Windows passes DISM and SFC, the application may be invoking WMI incorrectly or may have its own damaged files.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps.
  2. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose Advanced options if available.
  5. Try Repair first.
  6. If Repair does not help, choose Reset only after reviewing what application data it removes.
  7. If no repair option exists, uninstall the application.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or store.

Do not place a downloaded wmipsess.dll beside the application. If the application genuinely needs a private copy, its trusted installer should supply and configure it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 9: Use recovery options when Windows remains damaged

System Restore

Use System Restore when the error began after a driver, update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point and open it.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Review affected programs.
  6. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally preserves personal files but can remove recently installed applications, drivers, updates, and settings. Microsoft describes these effects in its Windows recovery options.

Windows 11 repair reinstall

On supported Windows 11 systems:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now.
  5. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings, subject to the conditions shown on your system. See Microsoft’s repair reinstall instructions.

Installation media

If the repair reinstall is unavailable or fails, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Back up important files first, confirm the edition and architecture, and follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance. A clean installation should be the last resort because it removes applications and may remove personal data unless backed up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why DLL download sites are unsafe

A third-party DLL archive may provide:

  • The wrong Windows build
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
  • A modified or malicious file
  • A file without a valid Microsoft signature
  • A DLL that does not match WMI registration
  • A replacement that hides, rather than repairs, component-store corruption

There is no verified standalone Microsoft wmipsess.dll redistributable. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows recovery media, and an official application installer when the application—not Windows—owns the file.

Prevention and final checks

After repairing the system:

  • Restart Windows and run the application again.
  • Confirm that wmipsess.dll is in the expected Windows WMI directory.
  • Recheck its Microsoft digital signature.
  • Keep Windows Update enabled.
  • Leave Microsoft Defender active and review Protection history after future quarantines.
  • Do not delete or rename WMI files manually.
  • Do not run regsvr32 unless trusted Microsoft or application-specific documentation explicitly requires it.
  • Keep recovery points and a current backup available.

If the problem remains, collect the Windows edition and build, exact error text, affected application, full file path, signature result, and DISM/SFC results. Include relevant entries from CBS.log, Event Viewer, and the application’s own log when requesting support.
