Errors this guide covers
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because wmm2filt.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting wmm2filt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading wmm2filt.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wmm2filt.dll was not found.”
- “wmm2filt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Class not registered” when importing media into Movie Maker.
wmm2filt.dll is a genuine Microsoft component named Windows Movie Maker Filters. It belongs to the legacy Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker multimedia stack, so the safest fix is to repair or restore the exact old installation that supplied it, not to copy a replacement into System32.
The 60-second answer
- Identify which program is calling
wmm2filt.dll. - Check whether the file exists under the old Movie Maker installation path.
- Check Windows Security Protection history in case antivirus quarantined it.
- Repair or reinstall the original Movie Maker or Windows DVD Maker installation.
- Only use
regsvr32if the file exists and the symptom is a registration problem such as “Class not registered.” - Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into
System32orSysWOW64.
Microsoft documents the normal location as:
%ProgramFiles%Movie MakerWMM2FILT.dll
The file is an application component, not a general Windows runtime library. Microsoft’s documentation associates that installation path with Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker. See Microsoft’s Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker installation-path documentation.

What wmm2filt.dll does
The DLL provides DirectShow filters used by the legacy multimedia software. Inventory records associate it with functions including WMT Import, WMT Volume, WMT Virtual Renderer, WMT DV Extract, and WMT MuxDeMux.
That explains why the error may appear when:
- Movie Maker starts
- Movie Maker imports video or audio
- An older multimedia application builds a media or codec graph
- Windows DVD Maker accesses media components
- A diagnostic tool lists installed DirectShow filters
A third-party game or editor listing wmm2filt.dll does not prove that the program owns or requires the file. Check the full error, the calling executable, and the path shown in the message.

Observed installed systems contain different legacy file versions, including older Windows XP and Windows 7-era builds. These records are identification clues, not a complete Microsoft version or architecture manifest. Match the file to the Movie Maker installation rather than searching for a universal download.
Why it is not normally in System32
Movie Maker installed wmm2filt.dll with the application under Program FilesMovie Maker. It was not intended to be a shared Windows system DLL that users copy into System32.
On a 64-bit computer, an older 32-bit application may instead be installed below:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
C:Program Files (x86)Movie Maker
Do not assume that every copy is 32-bit or every copy is 64-bit. The public documentation does not provide a conclusive file-specific architecture matrix. Match the DLL to the installed application and use the matching registration tool if registration is required.
A copy found in System32 on a computer with no legitimate legacy Movie Maker installation deserves investigation. Misplaced DLLs can cause version conflicts and increase DLL search-order risk. Microsoft explains the Windows DLL search order here.
Fix 1: Find the program that owns the error
Before changing files, establish whether Movie Maker is actually involved.
- Read the complete error window and note the executable name.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- Select the Shortcut tab and inspect Target.
- If the error came from a launcher, open its settings and note the installation folder.
- Search these locations in File Explorer:
C:Program FilesMovie MakerC:Program Files (x86)Movie Maker- The folder belonging to the calling application
- Look for
wmm2filt.dll.
If the file exists only in an unrelated folder, do not copy it into the calling program’s directory. The listing may be an inventory result rather than proof of a dependency.

This is the definitive fix when the file is missing, damaged, or belongs to an incomplete installation.
Use an installed program’s repair option
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Look for Windows Movie Maker, Windows Essentials, or a related Movie Maker entry.
- Select it and choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Movie Maker and test media import.
If the program opens but importing media still produces “Class not registered,” continue to the registration section below.
Use the original installer or system backup
If Repair is unavailable:
- Locate the original installation media or a known-good organizational system image.
- Confirm that it belongs to the same Movie Maker generation as the application already installed.
- Back up project files before removing the existing installation.
- Uninstall the damaged Movie Maker entry from Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the original package.
- Check that the DLL is present below the Movie Maker installation directory.
- Start the program and test the operation that previously failed.
Microsoft says Windows Essentials 2012, which included a later Movie Maker product, is unsupported and unavailable for download. Microsoft also warns that third-party “free Movie Maker” downloads are not sanctioned. Read Microsoft’s current Windows Essentials support guidance.
Windows Essentials 2012 is not automatically a replacement for every older Movie Maker or Windows DVD Maker component. Use the original installer, an existing vendor image, a system image, or a restore point whenever possible.

Security software may remove or quarantine an old executable component even when it came from a legitimate installation.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries related to Movie Maker,
wmm2filt.dll, or the Movie Maker installation directory. - Check the detected path and threat details.
- Restore or allow the file only if:
- It is in the expected Movie Maker directory.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature where applicable.
- The original installation is known to be legitimate.
- A current security scan does not identify the installation as malicious.
- Reinstall the complete Movie Maker package if the file was deleted or the signature is invalid.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can make an active threat available again. Use Microsoft’s Protection History guidance rather than blindly restoring every DLL.
Fix 4: Register the existing DLL when Movie Maker says “Class not registered”
wmm2filt.dll is an in-process COM server used by Movie Maker’s DirectShow components. Registration can help when the file exists but its COM registration is missing or damaged.
First, close Movie Maker. Then open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Search for
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the command using the actual installed path:
regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%Movie Makerwmm2filt.dll"
If the application is under Program Files (x86), use:
regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles(x86)%Movie Makerwmm2filt.dll"
On 64-bit Windows, the registration tool must match the DLL and the application:
- Use
%windir%System32regsvr32.exefor a 64-bit DLL. - Use
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exefor a 32-bit DLL.
For example:
"%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe" "C:Program Files (x86)Movie Makerwmm2filt.dll"
A successful registration reports that the operation completed. Reopen Movie Maker and test media import.
If registration reports an invalid image, an entry-point failure, or a missing module, stop. The file may be corrupt, the architecture may be wrong, or one of its dependencies may be missing. Reinstall the complete Movie Maker package instead of registering another downloaded copy. Microsoft documents the regsvr32 syntax for registering DLL command components here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 5: Understand “specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean that wmm2filt.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it.
Possible causes include:
- An incomplete Movie Maker installation
- A damaged media component
- A mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit component
- A corrupted file
- A missing codec or related legacy dependency
- A DLL loaded from the wrong directory
The practical fix is to reinstall the complete owning application. Installing random Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX packages, or .NET versions is generally unrelated unless the error separately identifies one of those runtimes.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They may not restore an application DLL installed below Program Files, but they are useful when the failure began after broader Windows corruption.
- Open Start.
- Search for Terminal.
- Right-click Terminal and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Movie Maker again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Follow Microsoft’s SFC and DISM procedure.
Running these commands repeatedly without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the repair issues involved and show what its free scan finds; repair is performed by the full version, but reinstalling Movie Maker remains the definitive fix when this application DLL is missing.

A recent graphics, audio, capture-device, or chipset change can expose problems in old multimedia software, although drivers do not normally supply wmm2filt.dll.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart and test the application.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any capture-device category.
- Right-click a device and select Properties.
- Review the Driver tab and any warning shown under General.
- If the problem began after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Otherwise install the driver supplied by the computer or device manufacturer.
Do not replace wmm2filt.dll to solve a Device Manager error. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers are stale, avoiding the manual process of hunting through many hardware pages; the full version performs the driver installation, while the Movie Maker reinstall remains the definitive repair for this DLL.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
If Movie Maker worked until a cleanup, update, driver installation, or malware incident, System Restore may return the installation and registry state to an earlier point.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Choose a different restore point if offered.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Test Movie Maker after Windows restarts.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications or drivers installed after the selected point. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions are available here.
Should you enable a Windows Feature?
Usually, no. Enabling an optional Windows feature does not recreate a missing wmm2filt.dll.
You can review optional media components by opening:
- Settings.
- System.
- Optional features.
- View features.
Install a media feature only when the application’s own documentation or error specifically requires it. Do not treat Windows Media Player Legacy or another optional component as a replacement for the original Movie Maker package.

Verify the file’s provenance
If the file exists, inspect its signature and hash rather than trusting its name.
In PowerShell, use the actual path:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:Program FilesMovie Makerwmm2filt.dll"
Get-FileHash "C:Program FilesMovie Makerwmm2filt.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
A valid path, expected calling application, and credible Microsoft signature are reassuring. A file in an unrelated folder, an invalid signature, or a failed hash comparison means you should reinstall from known-good media rather than keep the copy. Microsoft documents Get-AuthenticodeSignature and Get-FileHash.
Do not download wmm2filt.dll separately
Random DLL download sites websites are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different Movie Maker build, use the wrong architecture, or omit the dependency that caused the failure. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application directory can also create version conflicts.
Use the original Movie Maker installer, installation media, a known-good system image, or System Restore. If none is available, preserve the error details and migrate the project or workflow to a supported application rather than installing an unverified DLL.
Information to collect if the error continues
Record these details before asking for further help:
- The complete error text
- The executable that displays the error
- The full path of that executable
- Whether
wmm2filt.dllexists - The DLL’s full path
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and architecture
- The file’s digital-signature result
- The file version shown in Properties > Details, if available
- Whether antivirus quarantined it
- Whether Movie Maker launches but fails during media import
- Whether the error began after an update, driver change, cleanup, or restore
This separates a missing file from a registration failure, a dependency problem, and an unrelated diagnostic listing.
