What wmm2fxb.dll is and the safest fix
wmm2fxb.dll is the 32-bit Windows Movie Maker FX library, a Microsoft component shipped with Windows Movie Maker. It is not a general Windows runtime such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
The safest fix for a wmm2fxb.dll missing, not found, or could not be loaded error is to repair or reinstall the specific Movie Maker installation that owns the file. Do not download an isolated DLL and copy it into System32. That can introduce the wrong build, wrong architecture, malware, or a version mismatch while leaving the damaged Movie Maker installation unfixed.

Movie Maker exists in several historical forms:
- Windows XP Movie Maker 2.1
- Movie Maker included with Windows Vista
- Movie Maker 2.6, an older compatible release
- Windows Essentials Movie Maker, including the 2012 generation
The known 2.1.4026.0 record is a 32-bit historical build, but it is not the only Movie Maker-era build associated with this filename. Repair the parent program rather than trying to match a number from a download page.

- Look for
moviemk.exe, if Movie Maker remains open after the error. - Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
- Right-click
moviemk.exe, choose Properties, and open the Details tab. - Record the product name, file description, and version information if Windows shows them.
If Movie Maker closes immediately:
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Movie Maker.
- Right-click the result and choose Open file location.
- Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect the Target field.
- Follow that path in File Explorer.
The location matters. wmm2fxb.dll normally belongs beside the Movie Maker executable or within that release’s program directory. It is not normally a standalone System32 dependency.
Also check what happened immediately before the error:
- Movie Maker was uninstalled or reinstalled
- Windows was upgraded
- Disk cleanup removed application files
- Microsoft Defender quarantined a file
- A backup was restored
- An old XP or Vista installation was moved to Windows 10 or Windows 11
If the error names an old executable on Windows 10 or Windows 11, the file may be present but the program may still be incompatible with the current system.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the complete Movie Maker installation
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely successful fix because the DLL is part of Movie Maker, not a general Windows library.
Repair a classic desktop installation
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Movie Maker, Windows Essentials, or the relevant Movie Maker entry.
- Select it and choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Movie Maker again.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the damaged Movie Maker installation and reinstall it from the original, verified installer or Windows installation media. Preserve project files before uninstalling.
A clean reinstall must restore the complete application directory, not only wmm2fxb.dll. Movie Maker may require other files, registry settings, codecs, or dependencies that a manually copied DLL cannot provide.
Repair an app entry in Windows 11
Some installations expose an app repair interface:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for Movie Maker or Windows Essentials.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test Movie Maker.
- If Repair does not work, return to the same page and choose Reset, if available.
Reset can remove application settings, so copy or preserve project-related data first.

If you have no installer
For Windows XP or Vista, use the original Windows installation media or a known-good organizational backup that matches the installed Windows release. Movie Maker 2.1 was supplied with Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later XP installations. Movie Maker was included with most Vista editions, while Movie Maker 2.6 was distributed as an older compatible version.
Windows Essentials 2012 included a later Movie Maker, but Microsoft no longer supports or provides a current official download for Windows Essentials. Microsoft also warns that websites offering “free” Essentials downloads are not sanctioned Microsoft products.
If the original media is unavailable, do not replace the missing file from a random DLL site. Keep the project files, consider using the original operating system in a suitable virtual machine, or migrate the projects to a current editor.
What success looks like
The repair worked if:
- Movie Maker opens without the
wmm2fxb.dllmessage - The program reaches its normal editing screen
- Existing projects open without a new missing-component error
- The file is restored in the same application directory as the matching Movie Maker executable
If the same error returns immediately after repair, continue with the checks below rather than copying another DLL.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The DLL may have been deleted or quarantined, particularly if the installation came from an old backup or unofficial package.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Select a detection related to Movie Maker or
wmm2fxb.dll. - Read the detection details and file path.
Restore a quarantined file only if all of the following are true:
- It came from verified Microsoft installation media or a trusted existing installation
- It belongs to the matching Movie Maker release
- The file can be validated as authentic
- You are confident it was not obtained from an unofficial download page
Microsoft warns that a file should be restored and allowed only after it has been verified as safe. If the DLL came from an unofficial package, remove that package and reinstall Movie Maker from clean, trusted media instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter restoring a verified file, restart Windows and test Movie Maker. If Defender immediately quarantines it again, do not repeatedly restore it. Investigate the source and the complete installation.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
Use this step when Movie Maker was included with Windows, Windows files were damaged, or the problem began after an update, crash, disk error, or system cleanup. These commands may repair protected Windows components, but they may not restore a separately installed Movie Maker DLL.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Movie Maker.
DISM must run before SFC because SFC may use the repaired component store to replace damaged protected files. Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, test Movie Maker after restarting. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run the commands again only if Windows itself continues showing corruption symptoms. Do not assume repeated SFC runs will restore a separately installed Movie Maker component.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through system errors and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows detected issues, while repairs require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the correct Movie Maker package remains the definitive fix for a program-specific DLL.
Fix 5: Use compatibility troubleshooting on Windows 10 or 11
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Old XP, Vista, and Windows Essentials software can fail on a modern Windows installation even when wmm2fxb.dll is present. A message such as “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, an incompatible build, wrong architecture, or a tampered file.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose Movie Maker from the list, or browse to
moviemk.exe. - Follow the prompts to test the recommended compatibility settings.
- Start Movie Maker after the test.
You can also test compatibility manually:
- Right-click
moviemk.exe. - Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose the Windows version that matches the Movie Maker generation, if offered.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application.
Compatibility mode cannot repair a missing or corrupt DLL. It only addresses behavior caused by an old application running on a newer Windows version. Microsoft’s instructions are in its older app compatibility guide.
Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies without replacing files
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Known records identify wmm2fxb.dll as a 32-bit, or PE32, library. That is normal for historical Movie Maker software. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit program through its built-in compatibility layer, so installing a 64-bit replacement DLL is not the answer.
Check that:
- The DLL and
moviemk.execame from the same Movie Maker release - The file is located in the application’s own directory
- You are not mixing XP, Vista, and Windows Essentials files
- The error is not naming a different missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that wmm2fxb.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. “Not designed to run on Windows” can indicate a corrupt or incompatible file rather than a missing runtime.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a Movie Maker DLL is missing. Those packages are not a verified general fix for wmm2fxb.dll. If the error explicitly names a Visual C++ runtime DLL, investigate that separate component instead.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall a related driver only when the symptoms point there
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A display, audio, or capture-device driver can affect whether old video software starts, but a driver update does not replace wmm2fxb.dll. Use this step only when the problem began after a device change or when Device Manager reports a problem.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or the category for the affected capture device.
- Right-click the device.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the General tab and check Device status.
- Open the Driver tab to review the available actions.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver obtained from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test Movie Maker.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when available. Do not remove a working device driver simply because Movie Maker reports a missing application DLL.

It is optional, and it will not substitute for reinstalling Movie Maker when the application itself owns the missing DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Use System Restore only after normal repair fails
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use System Restore when Movie Maker worked recently and the failure followed a software installation, update, driver change, or cleanup operation.
- Press Windows+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, settings, and installed programs without removing personal files, but it is not a substitute for preserving project files. If no suitable restore point exists, cancel the process and return to repair or reinstallation.
Microsoft documents this process in its System Restore guidance.
Do not register or download this DLL manually
Do not run:
regsvr32 wmm2fxb.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no authoritative documentation establishing that wmm2fxb.dll requires COM or ActiveX registration as part of Movie Maker repair. Running the command can produce a registration error without fixing the application.
Manual copying is appropriate only when recovering the complete application from a verified, matching installation or backup. Copying one DLL into System32 can create a version mismatch, architecture conflict, malware exposure, or an “entry point not found” error.
The correct sources are the original Microsoft Windows or Movie Maker installation media, a verified existing installation, or a trusted organizational backup. Microsoft no longer provides a supported current Windows Essentials installer.

Frequently asked questions
Is wmm2fxb.dll a Windows system file?
It is a Microsoft Movie Maker component, not a general-purpose Windows runtime. Its exact directory depends on the Windows or Movie Maker release. It should normally remain with the matching Movie Maker installation rather than being copied into System32.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is the file 32-bit?
Known file records identify a 32-bit build, including version 2.1.4026.0. A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows, so a 64-bit Windows installation does not require a 64-bit replacement of this file.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a general response to this filename. Those packages are not a verified fix for a missing wmm2fxb.dll. First repair or reinstall Movie Maker and check whether the error actually names a separate runtime.
Why does Windows say “the specified module could not be found” when the DLL is present?
The message can refer to a dependency required by the DLL or by Movie Maker. It can also indicate an incompatible or corrupted installation. Reinstalling the complete matching application is safer than replacing individual files.
Can SFC restore wmm2fxb.dll?
SFC can repair protected Windows components. It may not restore a DLL belonging to a separately installed Movie Maker package. Run DISM first, then SFC, but use Movie Maker repair or reinstallation as the primary remedy.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I still download Windows Essentials Movie Maker from Microsoft?
Microsoft no longer supports or provides a current official Windows Essentials download. Avoid unofficial installers claiming to be Microsoft Movie Maker packages.
What if every fix fails?
Preserve the project files and stop replacing individual DLLs. If the software is essential, use the original supported operating system in a controlled virtual machine when practical, or move the projects to a modern video editor.
