wmsdmod.dll is a historical Microsoft Windows Media Screen Decoder, and an error naming it usually points to an old multimedia program or Windows Media component. It decodes legacy Windows Media Screen content, including MSS1 and MSS2 streams, but it is not a Visual C++ runtime file and should not be downloaded from a random DLL site.

Microsoft’s documentation describes the Windows Media 9 Screen decoder and identifies a different implementation filename on older supported Windows versions. That means current Windows documentation does not prove that wmsdmod.dll is still shipped in every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build.

The file may be missing, quarantined, damaged, incompatible with the application, or only the visible part of a deeper dependency problem.
Fix 1: Repair the program that reports the error
If only one application or game reports wmsdmod.dll, repair that program first. This is the most likely fix for an application-specific DLL error.

Use the program’s built-in repair option
- Close the affected program.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Open Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair button, open the application’s launcher or installer and look for Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Change.
A successful repair means the program starts without the wmsdmod.dll message and can open the affected media or project.
Reinstall from the original official installer
If repair fails:
- Back up the application’s projects, saves, profiles, or other user data.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the application again using its original installer or the software vendor’s official download.
- Run the program once as an administrator if its installer or documentation requires it.
- Test the same file or project that previously failed.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer or from a download page into the application folder. Even if the filename matches, the copy may be the wrong architecture, language, or version. Reinstalling the parent application restores the complete set of files and dependencies that belong together.
If the application is a 32-bit program, it may need a 32-bit decoder even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a 64-bit replacement does not automatically satisfy a 32-bit application.
Fix 2: Restore Windows Media features
Use this step when Windows Media Player, an old media component, or several applications are affected.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features beside Add an optional feature.
- Search for Windows Media Player or the relevant Windows Media feature.
- Select it and choose Next.
- Select Add.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose Manage optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Choose Windows Media Player.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows and test the application.

Windows 10 or Windows 11 N editions
N editions omit certain media technologies. To add them:

- Test the old application again.

Do not assume that installing the Media Feature Pack will restore this exact historical filename. It restores supported media capabilities; an old application may still require its own original files.
Fix 3: Repair damaged Windows components
Use DISM first, then System File Checker. Running SFC before DISM can leave it unable to repair files when the Windows component store is damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that repaired store. Microsoft documents the procedure in its guides for repairing a Windows image and using System File Checker.

If it says that it found files it could not repair, run DISM again and repeat SFC once. If the file belonged only to an old application, SFC may not restore it at all.
When DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft supports using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows version and architecture.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine an old decoder because legacy multimedia components are unusual or loaded by an old application.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
wmsdmod.dllor the affected application. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Do not restore it merely because the filename looks familiar.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from a known Microsoft or application installation.
- The application is trusted.
- The quarantine record identifies the expected installation path.
- The file’s digital signature or hash can be verified.
If you cannot verify those details, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the application from its official installer instead. Then scan the newly installed copy.

Fix 5: Remove codec conflicts
Microsoft warns that incompatible third-party codec packs can cause playback failures and system corruption.
If the error started after installing or removing a codec pack:

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the codec pack or multimedia utility.
- Select its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application.
- Test the media again.
Avoid installing several codec packs to solve the same problem. An old application may depend on a particular Windows Media component, while a newer codec pack changes which decoder is selected or removes files the application expects.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall relevant drivers
A graphics or audio driver will not normally replace wmsdmod.dll, but an old multimedia application can fail when its display or audio environment is incompatible.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant audio devices under Sound, video and game controllers.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart and test again.

Microsoft documented an old Windows Me Movie Maker problem in which the program could report an error in wmsdmod.dll or kernel32.dll after the display colour depth was set above 16-bit. The documented workaround was to use High Color, 16-bit, or lower.
This is a specific historical compatibility case, not a general solution for modern Windows 10 or Windows 11.

- Right-click the desktop and open display settings.
- Open the advanced display or adapter properties.
- Look for the colour-depth setting.
- Select High Color or 16-bit if that option exists.
- Restart the application.
Modern Windows often does not expose that setting. In that situation, use the application’s compatibility settings, a supported replacement, or an older supported environment rather than forcing unrelated DLL replacements.

A wmsdmod.dll message does not prove that the named file is the only problem. The real failure may involve:
- A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows
- A missing dependency beside the decoder
- A damaged media subsystem
- An incompatible codec
- A file blocked by security software
- An old application that no longer supports the current Windows release
If the program has logs, inspect them for the first error rather than the final DLL message. You can also check Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the crash.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and exception details.
Do not place a 32-bit file in C:WindowsSystem32 simply because the computer is 64-bit. Do not place files into system directories until the original software documentation specifically requires it.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers self-registering COM or OLE components that expose the required registration entry point.
A decoder DMO is not automatically repaired by registering it. If you run the command against a non-self-registering DLL, Windows may report that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. Microsoft explains this behavior in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guide.
Use regsvr32 only when the original software vendor explicitly instructs you to register that exact component.
What not to do
Do not download wmsdmod.dll from a random DLL site
A downloaded copy can contain malware, be the wrong architecture, belong to a different historical release, or lack required dependencies. It may also conceal the real problem, such as a broken application installation or codec conflict.

- Windows Optional Features
- The official Media Feature Pack for Windows N
- Windows repair mechanisms such as DISM and SFC
- A verified backup or restore point
Do not copy it into System32 as a first step
The application may need the file in its own installation directory, or it may need several matching files. System-wide copying can create version conflicts and affect unrelated programs.
