wpdmtpip.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Portable Devices component, and the safest fix is to repair Windows with DISM and SFC rather than download the DLL separately. If the error appeared while opening a phone utility, camera program, media application, installer, or unrelated game, repair the Windows component first and then the program that reported the error.

The file is normally protected and serviced as part of Windows. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game-specific runtime file.

The program displaying the error may not be the device program that originally uses MTP. An application can fail because Windows cannot load a damaged dependency, even when that application has nothing obvious to do with phones or cameras.

1. Repair Windows components first
This is the most likely solution when wpdmtpip.dll is missing from System32, several Windows components are failing, or the issue began after an interrupted update, disk problem, migration, or cleanup operation.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is checking or repairing the Windows image.
When successful, DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully. If it reports that repair files could not be found, continue to the SFC step, restart, install pending Windows updates, and run DISM again. If it still cannot repair the image, use matching official Windows installation media as a repair source with DISM’s /Source and /LimitAccess options rather than downloading an individual DLL.

After DISM completes:
- Keep the elevated Command Prompt open, or reopen it as administrator.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
SFC may report that it repaired corrupt files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. The first two results are positive. If SFC cannot repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. For persistent failures, review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Then consider an in-place Windows repair installation using matching official installation media.
After restarting, install pending updates through Settings > Windows Update. Try the affected program again and reconnect the phone, camera, or portable device if applicable.

Manually repeating DISM and SFC can make it difficult to see which repair changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repair actions are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ own DISM and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
2. Confirm the path and Windows edition
Before copying or replacing anything, check which file path appears in the error.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
wpdmtpip.dll. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures if that tab is available.
- Check that the file is associated with Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
Do not treat the file’s presence as proof that it is healthy. A file can exist but be corrupted, incompatible, incorrectly signed, or accompanied by a missing dependency.
Also check your edition:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Look at Windows specifications and confirm whether the edition includes N or KN.
Windows N editions exclude some media technologies that are included in standard Windows editions. That can affect Windows Portable Devices and MTP functionality.
3. Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N
If you use Windows 10 N or Windows 11 N, install the official Media Feature Pack.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Apps & features.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose Add a feature.
- Select Media Feature Pack.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 11 N
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows.
Test the affected application and device after restarting. If the error remains, refresh the device driver and repair the application as described below. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack documentation explains which media technologies are excluded and how to install the pack.
4. Reinstall the affected phone, camera, or MTP driver
A damaged portable-device driver can make a working Windows component appear unusable.

- Disconnect the phone, camera, or portable device.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices.
- Also inspect Universal Serial Bus controllers and any category containing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers to remove driver software, select that option only when you are sure the device driver is the damaged package.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the device with a suitable USB cable.
- Unlock the phone or camera and choose File Transfer, MTP, or the equivalent connection mode if prompted.
- Allow Windows Update to install the driver.
If the manufacturer provides an official Windows driver or device-management package, download it only from that manufacturer’s support page. Do not use a DLL mirror as a substitute for the complete driver package.
Manually identifying stale drivers across USB, chipset, portable-device, and related hardware can take time. It is optional, and Device Manager plus the hardware manufacturer’s official package remain valid repair methods.

If the device worked before a recent driver change:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
5. Repair the program that displays the error
If the error points to a copy of wpdmtpip.dll inside an application directory rather than C:WindowsSystem32, the application may have an incomplete or incompatible installation.
First use its built-in repair option:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the program and test it.
If no repair option exists:
- Close the application.
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the application’s official installer or its official distribution channel.
- Apply the program’s current updates.
This is particularly important if the program bundled an incompatible DLL or if the error appeared after a failed installation. A Windows repair will not necessarily repair files belonging to a third-party application.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run both 64-bit and 32-bit programs. A 32-bit program may need a 32-bit dependency, while a 64-bit program needs a 64-bit dependency. Do not decide which copy to use based only on the fact that Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit program folder or an x64 DLL into a 32-bit program folder.
6. Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus cleanup can remove a file after a detection, but a familiar filename alone does not prove that the quarantined item is safe.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Open a matching detection to inspect its original path and details.
Restore a quarantined file only when its original location, Microsoft digital signature, and surrounding context establish that it was a false positive. Do not blindly choose Allow on device. If the item was actually malicious or its identity is uncertain, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.

System Restore can help when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, or software installation.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error appeared.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can remove recently installed software, drivers, or updates. If no suitable restore point exists, return to DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and application repair.

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide the registration entry points Windows expects, such as DllRegisterServer.
There is no evidence that wpdmtpip.dll should be manually registered. Running a command such as this can produce another error without repairing the missing dependency:
regsvr32 wpdmtpip.dll
Do not use it as a substitute for DISM, SFC, driver repair, or application reinstall.

Why you should not download this DLL separately
Avoid DLL download sites and instructions telling you to copy wpdmtpip.dll into System32 or an application folder. A manually downloaded file can have the wrong Windows build, wrong architecture, invalid signature, or malicious content. It may also hide the actual problem, such as damaged component storage, a missing dependency, or an incomplete application installation.

FAQ
Is wpdmtpip.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component, but malware can use a familiar filename. Check its location and digital signature. A copy in a random download folder or an unexpected application directory deserves investigation rather than automatic approval.
Does this file prove that my phone or camera is the problem?
No. The error can be caused by Windows corruption or by an unrelated application loading a damaged dependency. MTP hardware is only one possible cause.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. Windows builds, servicing states, architecture, and signatures may differ. Repair the local Windows installation through official servicing tools.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
“Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency of wpdmtpip.dll, not necessarily the visible file itself. Check the exact path in the error, run DISM and SFC, repair the calling application, and inspect the file’s signature.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
There is no Microsoft-supported basis for treating wpdmtpip.dll as a Visual C++ runtime file. Repair Windows and the affected application instead.
What if nothing repairs the error?
If SFC repeatedly cannot repair files, use matching installation media for an in-place Windows repair.
