Do not download a loose copy and place it in System32. That can introduce the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or malware while leaving the damaged game installation unresolved.
Identify woncrypt.dll before repairing it
Historical Half-Life and Counter-Strike installations placed this file with other game files such as WONAuth.dll, WONDLL.dll, and the game executable. It belongs in the affected game’s installation directory or a relevant legacy game subdirectory.

The exact program producing the error is the executable that attempted to load the DLL. Look at the error window title and the shortcut you used. If the message appears while launching hl.exe, an old Counter-Strike executable, a GoldSrc mod, or a related WON-era program, repair that installation first.

Typical loader wording includes:
- “The program can’t start because woncrypt.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because woncrypt.dll was not found.”
- “woncrypt.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Failed to load woncrypt.dll.”
These are generic Windows loader variants. The wording alone does not prove that Windows owns the file.
Fix 1: Verify the complete game installation
This is the most likely solution for a Steam copy or any installation managed by a launcher. Verification restores missing or corrupted files without requiring you to find individual DLLs.
Steam steps
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game from Steam again.
If Steam reports that files were reacquired, test the game before making any other changes. The correct result is that the game starts without the woncrypt.dll message.
If verification completes but the error remains, close Steam completely and restart Windows. Then verify the files a second time. If the problem returns after every verification, check antivirus quarantine and the game’s installation permissions before reinstalling.
Do not copy woncrypt.dll from another Half-Life or Counter-Strike installation. Historical releases can use different companion files, checksums, and dependency sets even when the filename is identical.
Fix 2: Reinstall a standalone or retail game
An old standalone build may have lost the file during an incomplete installation, disk cleanup, manual file removal, or an unofficial patch.
- Back up saved games and configuration files if the game stores them inside its installation directory.
- Uninstall the affected game from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the game, choose the three-dot menu, and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original media or a trusted, legitimate installer.
- Apply only patches intended for that exact release.
- Start the game using its original shortcut or executable.
If the uninstaller leaves the old game directory behind, do not immediately delete it if it contains saves or custom maps. Rename the directory temporarily, install a clean copy, and test the new installation.

A successful repair restores the complete game file set, not only woncrypt.dll. If the reinstall produces a different missing-DLL message, record that filename. It may identify another missing dependency or indicate that the unofficial release is incomplete.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old unsigned game DLL, especially when the installation is modified, repacked, or downloaded from an untrusted source.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the game directory or
woncrypt.dll. - Open a detection to view its path and action.
- Restore the file only if the game installation is trusted and the file came from its original installer.
- Reinstall or verify the game afterward.
Restoring a quarantined file is not a substitute for repairing the installation. Verification or reinstallation ensures that the DLL and its companion files belong to the same release.
Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion for an unverified repack or a DLL downloaded separately. If the file is detected again, stop and scan the installer and the entire game directory.
Fix 4: Check for mixed 32-bit and 64-bit files
Historical records identify WONCrypt.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run many 32-bit games, so 64-bit Windows by itself does not explain a missing-file message.
The problem is more likely to be a mixed installation, such as copying a DLL from a different release or combining files from Half-Life, Counter-Strike, a mod, and an unofficial patch.
Symptoms of a mismatched file set include:
- “Bad image” errors
- Entry-point errors
- The file exists but will not load
- A new missing-DLL message after copying
woncrypt.dll - The game starts briefly and then closes
The fix is to restore the exact files supplied with the affected release. Do not attempt to solve a 32-bit game problem by placing a random 64-bit DLL in the game directory or by copying a 32-bit file into Windows folders.

Fix 5: Determine whether a dependency is actually missing
Windows may report “The specified module could not be found” when the named DLL exists but one of its dependencies cannot be loaded.
First, use the game’s verification or reinstall process. That is safer than manually replacing dependencies.

- Open the game directory.
- Confirm that
woncrypt.dllis present there. - Check whether the error changes after verification.
- Note any new DLL name shown by the message.
- Search the game’s original installer or documentation for that dependency.
- Do not download individual dependencies from random DLL sites.
A file with the right name can still be wrong if its architecture, checksum, companion DLLs, or release does not match the game. Advanced dependency-analysis utilities can help, but use them only after obtaining a clean installation and recording the exact executable that fails.
Fix 6: Test legacy compatibility only after restoring the files
A very old standalone WON build may remain incompatible with modern Windows even when every original file is present. The old online service infrastructure was replaced by Steam, so restoring a DLL cannot recreate a discontinued service.
For an offline or preservation installation:
- Right-click the game executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test an older Windows mode conservatively.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the game again.
You can also select Run this program as an administrator for a trusted local installation if the program needs permission to write inside its own directory. This is a compatibility workaround, not proof that woncrypt.dll was repaired.
Prefer a supported Steam edition where it is available. If the original standalone build is required, preserve the installer and document which compatibility setting allows it to run.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
woncrypt.dll is not established as a Windows system file, so Windows repair commands should not be expected to recreate it. Use them when Windows itself shows broader symptoms, such as repeated system component errors, broken updates, or multiple unrelated applications failing.

Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):
- Open Start.
- Search for
terminal. - Right-click Windows Terminal.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Verify or reinstall the game again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is the normal repair method for a game-owned woncrypt.dll.

Fix 8: Update drivers only for broader game failures
A graphics or chipset driver is not a normal source of a specifically missing woncrypt.dll message. Consider driver work only if the game also crashes with display errors, fails after a Windows update, or other games show similar problems.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a driver rollback:
- Right-click the device in Device Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.

What not to do
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows components and installed system libraries. woncrypt.dll is associated with a legacy game installation. Moving it there can create DLL search-order conflicts and contaminate Windows with a third-party file.
Do not use random DLL download sites
A downloaded DLL may contain malware, belong to a different release, use the wrong architecture, or omit a required companion file. It often does not fix the damaged installation that caused the error.

Do not run regsvr32 automatically
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A game runtime DLL is normally loaded by the game and is not automatically a registerable Windows component. Registering it is unlikely to repair this error.

Do not install unrelated runtimes first
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, Windows Features, and driver packages are not documented sources for woncrypt.dll. Install them only when the actual error identifies that component or the game’s official requirements call for it.
