For most new or small WooCommerce stores, start with capable shared or managed WooCommerce hosting—not a VPS. WooCommerce does not require a VPS by default. It requires current PHP and database versions, HTTPS, enough memory and PHP workers, correct caching, backups, and support that understands dynamic checkout traffic. Move to a VPS when measurements show your current account is throttling checkout, your catalog and order volume make the administration area persistently slow, or you need root-level services and have the skills (or budget for management) to operate a server.
A VPS gives you isolated CPU and RAM, root access, and more control over databases, object caching and custom services. It also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, firewall rules, monitoring, backups and incident recovery unless you buy a managed plan. The better choice is therefore the environment that meets your store’s measured workload with an acceptable operational burden—not the label that sounds more powerful.

Before comparing hosting types, verify the software baseline. WooCommerce’s current server recommendations for version 10.8 and later list:
| Component | Current recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress | 6.9 or greater | Provides the supported application and security baseline for current WooCommerce releases. |
| PHP | 8.3 or greater; tested up to PHP 8.4 | Runs WooCommerce code. Older releases may still run but are end-of-life and can expose a store to vulnerabilities. |
| Database | MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or greater | Stores products, orders, customers and settings. Outdated database software can be unsupported or insecure. |
| Transport security | HTTPS | Protects logins, customer data and payment sessions; it is also expected by modern payment providers and browsers. |
| WordPress memory limit | At least 256 MB | Gives WordPress and extensions room to process product queries, cart logic, checkout and administrative requests. |
| Web server | Apache or Nginx recommended | Both are widely supported and can provide URL rewriting, TLS and caching integrations. |
WooCommerce’s documentation puts the operational step plainly: “Before you install WordPress and WooCommerce, verify that your hosting environment meets the following requirements.” A low-cost account that fails one of these checks is not a bargain, whether it is called shared hosting or a VPS.

WordPress.org’s hosting guidance similarly asks for PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, Apache or Nginx with mod_rewrite, and HTTPS. It also notes that hosting is more secure when PHP applications run under the account’s own username instead of a server-wide shared username. Ask a provider how PHP processes are isolated before you sign up.
How shared hosting works for a WooCommerce store
On shared hosting, many customer accounts use the same physical server. The provider controls the operating system and web stack, while your account receives a quota for CPU, memory, storage, processes and database activity. A control panel usually handles domains, email, SSL certificates, backups and PHP versions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When shared hosting is a good fit
- A new store has modest, predictable traffic and a small catalog.
- You do not need root access or unusual background services.
- The provider offers current PHP and database versions, HTTPS, automatic backups and WooCommerce-aware support.
- The account has enough memory and PHP workers for simultaneous product and checkout requests.
- Catalog pages can be cached while carts and checkout remain dynamic.
WooCommerce’s 2026 hosting guide describes a starter tier for stores making less than $10,000 per month. That figure is a guide threshold, not a universal capacity limit: a store with complex subscriptions, heavy reporting or a sudden campaign can outgrow an account below it, while a simple catalog may run comfortably above it. The guide’s starter essentials are preinstalled WooCommerce, SSL, automatic backups and a trustworthy uptime guarantee; it says dedicated servers and real-time backups are unnecessary at that stage.
The cache rule that determines whether shared hosting feels fast
Product, category and other logged-out catalog pages are mostly read operations and can usually be cached at the page or edge level. Cart, checkout, account pages and other customer-specific responses must bypass page cache. Caching a cart or checkout can show one shopper another shopper’s data, display stale stock or break payment sessions.
Configure exclusions for the cart, checkout, account and any URL or cookie your payment and membership extensions document. Test in an incognito window, while logged in, with an item in the cart and through the payment gateway’s return flow. A provider that advertises a cache but cannot explain these exclusions is not WooCommerce-ready.
Shared-hosting limits to ask about
Shared plans often enforce limits through a control system rather than a simple disk quota. One documented example uses cPanel, LiteSpeed and CloudLinux LVE without root access. During a real checkout, CPU, RAM, entry-process or concurrent-PHP limits can throttle requests even when the account’s storage is mostly empty. Ask support for the exact limits, how throttling is reported and whether they can provide historical resource graphs.

Shared hosting is therefore “good enough” only when its limits are known and your measurements stay below them. A fast marketing page does not prove that payment callbacks, stock updates and order creation have adequate resources.
How a VPS changes the equation
A virtual private server reserves a virtual machine’s CPU, RAM and storage for your instance. Other customers may share the physical host, but their account limits do not normally consume your assigned resources. You can obtain root access to install services, tune the database, change web-server settings and configure a firewall.
What a VPS enables
- Predictable CPU and RAM allocation for PHP workers, scheduled tasks and database queries.
- Redis or another object-cache service installed and tuned for your workload.
- Database settings adjusted for a large catalog, reporting jobs or complex extensions.
- Custom daemons, queue workers, webhooks and integrations that shared plans prohibit.
- Root-level firewall, process, web-server and log configuration.
- Vertical scaling to a larger CPU, RAM or NVMe tier without changing the application architecture.
A current WooCommerce VPS description from a major provider lists isolated CPU, RAM and NVMe storage plus root access for configuring WordPress, WooCommerce, caching, databases and security. Those capabilities are useful only if someone can operate them safely.
The operational cost of control
On a self-managed VPS, you own the operating system, PHP and database updates, web-server configuration, firewall rules, SSH security, malware response, backup jobs, monitoring, log retention and disaster recovery. A provider may replace failed hardware, but that does not mean it will restore a corrupted database or fix a broken plugin deployment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A managed VPS shifts some of this work back to the provider. “Managed” is not a universal specification: verify whether the service includes kernel and package patching, WordPress updates, malware monitoring, restore assistance, performance tuning, 24/7 response and migration. A managed WooCommerce host can cost more than a self-managed VPS while reducing the time and risk your team carries.
Performance: measure the bottleneck, not the hosting label
WooCommerce’s official hosting guide recommends asking five concrete questions:

- How many dedicated PHP workers are included, and can they be increased?
- Is persistent object caching available, and is it configured for WooCommerce?
- Is a built-in CDN included, and how are dynamic pages excluded?
- Can the environment scale vertically when a campaign creates a sudden load?
- Does support troubleshoot WooCommerce requests rather than telling you to disable plugins blindly?
PHP workers
PHP workers execute the code that renders product data, prices, inventory, cart contents and checkout. If all workers are busy, new requests queue even when CPU usage looks moderate. WooCommerce’s guide gives five to ten dedicated workers as a starting point. Treat that as a starting recommendation, not a guarantee: extensions, scheduled imports, payment callbacks and account pages can require more concurrency.
Object caching and databases
Object caching stores repeated database results so WordPress does not perform the same lookup for every request. It helps menus, settings, product queries and sessions, but it does not replace a properly indexed database or page-cache exclusions. On shared hosting, object caching may be offered as a provider feature; on a VPS, you can install and tune it yourself, but you must secure the service and monitor memory use.

CDN and vertical scaling
A CDN can serve static images, stylesheets and scripts from locations closer to shoppers. It should not cache personalized checkout responses. Vertical scaling—adding CPU, RAM or faster storage—helps when a campaign or influencer mention creates a short-lived spike. Confirm the upgrade path, expected restart or migration process and whether the new capacity is available immediately.
Practical warning signs that the current host is too small
WooCommerce’s guide identifies useful thresholds and symptoms:
- Checkout time to first byte (TTFB) consistently above 800 milliseconds.
- The WordPress admin remains slow after the store reaches about 5,000 products or 10,000 orders.
- Slowdowns or 502 errors appear during a promotion.
- Support repeatedly tells you to disable plugins as a diagnostic shortcut instead of identifying resource contention.
These are practical guidance thresholds, not guarantees for every stack. Measure logged-out catalog requests separately from dynamic checkout requests, record error rates and correlate them with CPU, memory, PHP-worker and database metrics. A VPS will not fix inefficient queries, oversized images, a broken extension or an external payment outage.
Shared hosting versus VPS: decision matrix
| Store situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| New store, modest traffic, limited technical staff | Managed shared or managed WooCommerce hosting | Lower operational burden; current software, SSL, backups and support matter most. |
| Existing store with measured checkout throttling | VPS or a higher managed tier | Isolated resources and tuning address a documented bottleneck. |
| Need Redis, custom daemons, unusual integrations or root firewall control | VPS | Root access enables services and database or cache tuning that shared accounts restrict. |
| Revenue-critical store without an internal system administrator | Managed WooCommerce hosting or managed VPS | The provider handles more patching, monitoring and infrastructure work. |
| Campaigns create sharp traffic spikes | Host with vertical scaling, CDN, object cache and WooCommerce support | Scaling and correct dynamic-page handling matter more than the product name. |

- Introductory and renewal rates, including the contract term.
- VAT or GST for your billing country.
- Control-panel, backup, monitoring and premium-support fees.
- Migration, staging and restore charges.
- Managed-service fees if the VPS provider does not administer the operating system.
- The value of staff or contractor time spent on patching, alerts, incidents and recovery.
For a concrete provider-specific example, a current UK VPS page displays £3.46 per month renewing at £4.20 per month for an NVMe 2 tier, and £9.59 per month renewing at £21.41 per month for an NVMe 8 tier. These are that provider’s offers, can change, and do not establish what every VPS costs. Check the checkout page and terms for your country before relying on any figure.
A cheap self-managed VPS can become the expensive option if one missed patch, failed backup or overnight incident requires emergency engineering. Conversely, paying for managed services you never use wastes money. Match the plan’s included work to your team’s actual capability.
Security, backups and responsibility
Both hosting types can be secure or insecure. Shared hosting centralizes patching and may isolate accounts, but you still must update WordPress, WooCommerce, themes and extensions, use strong administrator authentication and remove unused plugins. On a VPS, add operating-system and service patching, least-privilege users, SSH-key policies, firewall rules and log review.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBackups are only useful when restoration works
Confirm backup frequency, retention, off-server storage, encryption and whether databases are captured consistently with uploaded media. Ask who initiates a restore, how long it takes and whether restoration is tested. A backup checkbox without a tested restore path is not a recovery plan.
Define the support boundary
Get the escalation process in writing. Determine whether support can inspect PHP-worker saturation, slow queries, web-server logs and failed cron jobs, or whether it only supports the control panel. Revenue-critical stores should know the response target for checkout failures and who has authority to roll back a deployment.
How to choose without guessing
- Inventory the store. Record product count, order volume, active customers, payment gateways, subscriptions, imports, search tools, scheduled jobs and expected campaign peaks.
- Verify the software baseline. Confirm WordPress 6.9 or newer, PHP 8.3 or newer (tested through 8.4), MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, HTTPS and a 256 MB or higher WordPress memory limit. Record any component that is end-of-life.
- Ask prospective hosts for limits. Request PHP-worker counts, CPU and RAM policies, process limits, object-cache availability, CDN behavior, backup retention, restore fees and support scope.
- Test dynamic paths. Measure logged-out product pages, a logged-in account, cart, checkout, payment return and webhooks separately. Confirm catalog pages cache while cart and checkout intentionally miss cache.
- Load-test realistically. Use representative products, variations, customer sessions and payment callbacks in a staging environment. Measure checkout TTFB, error rates, queueing and database saturation rather than relying on a homepage speed score.
- Compare total cost. Price the first year and renewal year, then add management, migration, monitoring, backups and expected staff time.
- Choose the least complex option that passes. Stay on shared or managed WooCommerce hosting while it meets the measurements. Upgrade when a documented limit, required service or operational policy demands it.
Moving from shared hosting to a VPS
A migration is a project, not a switch in a billing panel. Plan it during a low-order period and keep the old account available until the new store is validated.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Document the current state. List PHP extensions, cron schedules, DNS records, email settings, payment webhooks, firewall rules, cache exclusions and plugin versions.
- Prepare the VPS. Apply operating-system updates, create a non-root administrative user, configure SSH keys and a firewall, install a supported web server, PHP version and database, and set HTTPS before exposing the store.
- Harden and monitor. Disable unnecessary services, restrict database access, configure malware and log monitoring, and create tested off-server backups.
- Copy files and database. Use a maintenance or staging process that preserves uploads, product data, orders, customers and serialized WordPress settings. Do not perform an unverified search-and-replace on serialized data.
- Validate on a temporary hostname. Test catalog caching, cart and checkout exclusions, taxes, shipping, coupons, stock reduction, emails, payment callbacks, scheduled actions, refunds and account pages.
- Measure under representative load. Confirm PHP workers, object cache, database queries, TTFB and error rates meet the target before DNS changes.
- Cut over with a short write freeze. Put the old store in maintenance mode, take a final database backup, synchronize new orders, lower DNS TTL in advance and update DNS, webhooks and any allowlists.
- Watch the first trading period. Monitor checkout success, 4xx and 5xx responses, PHP and database saturation, cron failures, queue backlogs and payment-provider callbacks. Keep the rollback plan and old environment available until the data is reconciled.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
Catalog pages are fast but checkout is slow
Check that checkout is intentionally uncached, then inspect PHP-worker queues, database slow queries, payment-gateway response time and extension hooks. Increasing page-cache duration will not solve a dynamic request. A higher shared tier or VPS is justified only if measurements show resource contention after application issues are ruled out.
Checkout returns 502 or 504 errors during promotions
Capture the exact time, request path and server logs. Compare concurrent PHP processes, memory, CPU, database connections and upstream timeouts with normal traffic. Enable CDN delivery for static assets and plan vertical scaling before the next campaign. Do not simply disable plugins in production without identifying which request or resource is failing.
The admin slows as products and orders grow
Profile scheduled actions, reporting queries, search indexes, imports and database size. Object caching and database tuning may help; so may moving heavy imports to a queue. The product and order thresholds cited by WooCommerce are signals to investigate, not an automatic command to buy a VPS.
The VPS is fast but unreliable
Review patch history, disk space, memory pressure, failed cron jobs, backup results, firewall logs and monitoring coverage. A VPS can deliver isolated resources while still losing orders if backups, updates or recovery procedures are neglected. Add management or an operations professional if the store cannot sustain that work.
Bottom line: which is better?
Shared hosting is better for a small or new WooCommerce store when it satisfies the current software baseline, provides HTTPS and backups, offers enough PHP workers and memory, and handles cache exclusions correctly. It keeps infrastructure work low while you validate the business.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A VPS is better when measured checkout traffic hits shared limits, the store needs Redis or other custom services, root firewall and database control are requirements, or campaigns demand predictable scaling. Select a managed VPS if your team cannot continuously patch, monitor, back up and recover a server. Reassess with measurements—checkout TTFB, errors, worker queues, database load and admin response—not with revenue or marketing labels alone.
