WooCommerce is usually the better choice for a store already built around WordPress, content publishing and WordPress developers. PrestaShop is usually better for an ecommerce-first operation that needs native multistore tools, a commerce-focused back office and more catalog functions in the core product.
Neither platform is “free” to operate. Both can be downloaded without a monthly core-platform charge, but your real budget includes hosting, domains, payment services, development, extensions or modules, security work, updates, support and eventual migrations. The right decision depends less on the download price than on your catalog, team skills, content strategy, international requirements and five-year operating cost.

Quick verdict
WooCommerce adds ecommerce to WordPress. That makes it a natural fit when articles, landing pages, organic search and editorial workflows are central to revenue. You get the wider WordPress ecosystem and a highly composable system, but you must select and maintain more of the stack yourself.

PrestaShop is ecommerce software designed specifically for online selling. Its administration, catalog and order model start from commerce rather than content publishing. PrestaShop promotes more than 600 built-in features, native multistore operation and support for large catalogs; those are platform claims, not independent performance benchmarks, but they describe where the product places its priorities.

| Choose | When it is the stronger fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce | Your organization already uses WordPress; publishing and SEO are major acquisition channels; you need broad integrations and control over code and hosting. | Extension selection, compatibility testing and maintenance become your responsibility as the store grows. |
| PrestaShop | The project is ecommerce-first; native multistore, multilingual catalogs or specialized commerce workflows are important; the team prefers more capability in the core back office. | You need people familiar with PrestaShop’s architecture, modules and upgrade process rather than general WordPress expertise. |
How the platforms are built
WooCommerce: a WordPress ecommerce layer
WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin and ecosystem. WordPress supplies the content-management foundation, user accounts, themes and publishing workflow; WooCommerce adds products, carts, checkout, orders, payments and store administration. The model is deliberately composable: you select hosting, a theme, payment connections and extensions instead of buying one fixed package.
This architecture is valuable for a publisher, creator, agency or community whose store sits beside a large content site. The same installation can connect product pages with posts, guides, email capture and membership content. It also means that a WordPress update, theme change or unrelated plugin can affect checkout, so release management has to cover the whole application.
PrestaShop: commerce-first software
PrestaShop is a standalone ecommerce application. Its data model and administration are organized around catalogs, combinations, pricing rules, orders, shipping, customer accounts and store operations. Content pages exist, but the product does not depend on WordPress’s publishing model.
That focus can reduce the number of commerce decisions you make during initial setup. It can also make the platform less familiar to a team whose strongest skills are in WordPress rather than specialized ecommerce systems. Your agency, freelancers and internal administrators should be evaluated for PrestaShop experience before you commit.
What each one costs
Both vendors describe their core products as free to download and install, with no platform commission on sales. That statement covers the software license, not the complete operating budget. PrestaShop also offers a hosted subscription that bundles hosting and support, while its Classic download leaves hosting under your control. WooCommerce expects you to arrange hosting separately.
| Cost area | WooCommerce | PrestaShop |
|---|---|---|
| Core software | No monthly platform fee; software is downloadable. | Free Classic download with no monthly core fee; a separate Hosted subscription is available. |
| Hosting | Merchant chooses and pays for hosting. The official guidance is to use solid hosting as the store grows. | Merchant supplies hosting for Classic, or receives hosting within the Hosted offer. |
| Extensions and modules | More than 1,000 marketplace extensions are promoted by WooCommerce; prices and licenses vary. | PrestaShop promotes more than 4,000 modules on its comparison page and more than 5,000 modules and themes on its product page; prices and licenses vary. |
| Development | Budget for WordPress, WooCommerce, theme and extension integration, custom code and testing. | Budget for PrestaShop-specific development, module integration, theme work and testing. |
| Support | Documentation, marketplace providers and the broader WordPress service market; hosting support is arranged separately. | Documentation, tutorials, paid support plans, hosted support, training and a network of more than 600 experts are promoted by PrestaShop. |
Build a five-year total-cost model before deciding. Include renewals for premium extensions or modules, staging environments, backups, monitoring, security reviews, developer hours, payment and tax integrations, search infrastructure, replatforming risk and the cost of taking the store offline during upgrades. A low initial invoice can become expensive if every new requirement needs another extension and custom compatibility work.
Built-in features versus an extension strategy
PrestaShop’s core-oriented approach
PrestaShop says it includes more than 600 built-in features. Its comparison materials point to advanced pricing, multilingual operation, multistore, catalog mode, product comparison and data import as examples of functions that might otherwise require WooCommerce plugins. Treat these numbers as PrestaShop’s positioning statement rather than an independent feature audit, and confirm that the exact workflow you need exists in your chosen version.

Having a function in the core can simplify vendor management and reduce the number of third-party components involved in checkout or pricing. It does not eliminate configuration work: payment gateways, tax rules, shipping carriers, search, accounting and marketplace connections can still require modules or custom development.
WooCommerce’s modular approach
WooCommerce emphasizes an à-la-carte model and reports more than 1,000 marketplace extensions. Its official feature set covers subscriptions, shipping, local payment methods, multilingual and multicurrency selling, tax compliance, wholesale pricing and inventory-management support. Some functions are available in core, while others are delivered by official or third-party extensions.
Modularity lets you choose a narrowly tailored stack and replace one component without replacing the store. The cost is governance. Record every extension’s purpose, owner, license renewal, supported versions, data it changes and rollback plan. Test updates on a staging copy, especially when several extensions modify checkout, prices, stock or order status.
Catalog size, performance and multistore
Large catalogs
PrestaShop’s comparison page claims support for “very large catalogs (over 100,000 products) and high order amounts.” The same material warns that WooCommerce is not adapted for large catalogs. Those are competitive vendor claims, not controlled tests, so they should not be treated as a guarantee for your store.
WooCommerce’s official material says growth is possible with solid hosting and includes a customer example describing expansion without paying a third-party margin. That is a testimonial, not laboratory performance evidence. A large WooCommerce catalog can require careful database indexing, object caching, search architecture, queue-based imports and disciplined extension selection.
For either platform, validate the design with a representative load test. Model product variations, customer accounts, order history, import frequency, traffic spikes, payment callbacks and administrative reports. Measure checkout latency and background-job completion rather than relying on a product-count headline.
Multistore and regional operations
PrestaShop promotes native multistore and multilingual capabilities. This can be useful when several storefronts share products, customers or back-office processes but need different domains, currencies, languages, catalogs or prices. Confirm how your required tax, stock and fulfillment rules map to the multistore configuration before launch.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

WooCommerce can support multilingual, multicurrency and international selling through its core direction and extensions. It offers flexibility, but you must assemble and maintain the relevant components and verify that translations, currency conversion, taxes, shipping and analytics remain consistent across stores.
Hosting and deployment choices
Deploying WooCommerce
- Choose WordPress-compatible hosting with enough CPU, memory, database capacity and object caching for your expected traffic and catalog.
- Install WordPress, WooCommerce, a supported theme and only the extensions required for your first release.
- Configure payment, shipping, tax, email delivery, inventory and analytics in a staging environment.
- Run test orders for every payment method, refund path, stock transition, coupon rule and notification before production.
- Set automated backups, uptime monitoring, malware protection, update windows and a rollback procedure.
Hosting is a performance dependency, not a one-time checkbox. Keep production, staging and backup locations separate, and document who can change plugins, themes, database settings and DNS.
Deploying PrestaShop
- Decide between the Classic self-hosted download and the Hosted subscription. Confirm exactly which hosting, support and essential services are included in the subscription you are considering.
- Verify server requirements and PHP, database, web-server and extension compatibility for the PrestaShop version you will run.
- Install the theme and required modules on staging, then configure catalog rules, combinations, currencies, languages, taxes, carriers and payment methods.
- Import a representative catalog and test combinations, stock, price rules, customer groups, order states, invoices, returns and partial shipments.
- Schedule backups, security updates, module reviews, log monitoring and a tested restore process before opening the store.
Self-hosting gives control over infrastructure and deployment timing, while Hosted reduces infrastructure administration. Compare the subscription’s support boundaries and migration options with the skills available in your team.
Content, SEO and merchandising workflows
WordPress gives WooCommerce an advantage when the buying journey starts with articles, tutorials, video pages, creator updates or other editorial content. Editors can work in the same content system as the store, and developers can use the large WordPress ecosystem for templates and integrations.
PrestaShop is better aligned with teams whose primary work is merchandising: maintaining attributes and combinations, pricing rules, categories, stock, orders and customer service. You can publish informational pages, but a content-heavy site may require additional tooling or a separate publishing system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor either platform, define ownership of canonical URLs, redirects, structured product data, faceted navigation, out-of-stock behavior, image optimization, internal search and international hreflang signals. These outcomes depend on configuration and implementation, not simply on the platform name.
Administration and daily operations
Product and order teams
A WooCommerce team often works across WordPress and WooCommerce screens, with some functions exposed by extensions. This can be convenient for a small team already familiar with WordPress, but order, subscription, fulfillment or wholesale workflows may span several interfaces.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
PrestaShop presents a more specialized commerce back office. Catalog, customer, order and promotion concepts are central to the administration. That focus can shorten the path for an ecommerce operator, while increasing the value of training in PrestaShop’s terminology and module conventions.
Inventory and integrations
List every system that must exchange data: enterprise resource planning, warehouse management, accounting, email, marketplaces, point of sale, search, tax calculation and shipping. Compare connector maturity, synchronization direction, retry behavior, rate limits and ownership of the source of truth. A platform with a native feature can still need custom integration when your operational rules are unusual.

Security, updates and maintenance
Open-source software gives you access to code and deployment choices, but it does not transfer maintenance to the vendor. Keep the core platform, themes, modules and extensions patched; remove abandoned components; restrict administrator access; enforce multifactor authentication where available; and review logs for failed logins, payment errors and unexpected file changes.
WooCommerce maintenance must account for the interaction between WordPress core, WooCommerce, themes and plugins. PrestaShop maintenance must account for the core application, themes and modules. In both cases, maintain a staging environment and test checkout after every update that touches products, prices, customer accounts, payments or caching.

WooCommerce’s December 2024 roadmap said the project was moving more essential features into core to reduce extension-management burden. Roadmaps can change; verify the status of any feature before making it a reason to migrate.

A decision framework for your store
Score both platforms against the same evidence instead of choosing by reputation. The following questions expose the costs and risks that a free-download comparison misses.
- Existing investment: Do you already have WordPress content, themes, integrations and staff? If yes, preserving that investment usually favors WooCommerce.
- Commerce complexity: Do native pricing, catalog, multistore or back-office workflows matter more than editorial flexibility? If yes, investigate PrestaShop first.
- Catalog model: How many products, combinations, attributes, languages and price lists will you manage, and how often will they change?
- International selling: Which currencies, tax regimes, languages, domains, warehouses and payment methods must operate simultaneously?
- Team capability: Can your team diagnose WordPress plugin conflicts, or does it have PrestaShop module and upgrade experience?
- Infrastructure: Who will tune databases, caching, search, queues, backups, security and traffic capacity?
- Extension governance: Which components are mission-critical, how often do they release updates, and what happens if one is abandoned?
- Support model: Do you need a hosted service with bundled support, or do you want complete control of infrastructure and providers?
- Migration tolerance: What redirects, customer data, order history, subscriptions and integrations would have to move if the platform no longer fits?
Migration and proof-of-fit testing
Do not select a platform solely from a demonstration store. Build a proof of fit using your own data and workflows.
- Export a realistic sample of products, variations, categories, customers and historical orders, with sensitive data protected.
- Implement the most difficult pricing, tax, shipping, stock and customer-group rules on both candidates.
- Connect the payment, fulfillment, accounting, email and search systems that cannot be replaced easily.
- Run concurrent browsing, search, imports, checkout and administrative reports while monitoring response times and failed jobs.
- Perform an upgrade in staging, restore from backup and roll back a deliberately broken deployment.
- Calculate five-year labor, hosting, licenses, support, migration and downtime costs using the same assumptions for each platform.
Document every exception discovered during the exercise. A platform that requires fewer workarounds for your actual operation is usually the cheaper platform, even when its initial software price is identical.
Which platform fits common store profiles?
WordPress publisher adding commerce
Choose WooCommerce when your audience already arrives through WordPress articles, guides or media and the store is an extension of that publishing business. You can keep editorial and product content in one ecosystem, provided you accept responsibility for extension compatibility and hosting performance.
Dedicated retailer with several storefronts
PrestaShop deserves priority when the business operates multiple regional or brand stores and wants multistore and multilingual capabilities in the commerce product. Validate stock, tax, pricing and fulfillment boundaries before assuming native support covers every scenario.
Small team seeking the simplest first launch
Neither platform is automatically simpler. WooCommerce may feel faster if the team already knows WordPress; PrestaShop may require fewer commerce add-ons for a catalog-heavy launch. Compare the exact setup tasks, not the number of installation screens.
Large or fast-growing catalog
Use architecture testing rather than vendor slogans. PrestaShop’s stated support for catalogs above 100,000 products may align with an ecommerce-first design, while WooCommerce can scale with appropriate hosting and engineering. In both cases, search, indexing, imports, variations, caching and order volume determine the real limit.
Bottom-line decision
Pick WooCommerce when WordPress, content-led acquisition and maximum composability are strategic assets, and your team can govern extensions and hosting. Pick PrestaShop when ecommerce operations, native multistore and commerce functionality in the core are more important than WordPress integration. For either choice, approve the platform only after a store-specific proof of fit and a five-year total-cost review.
