Configure SMTP submission on port 587 with STARTTLS, switch to port 2525 if 587 is unreachable, and use port 465 only with implicit-TLS settings. Direct delivery to recipient mail servers requires outbound port 25, which many VPS providers restrict.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What a blocked port 25 means
SMTP port 25 is primarily the server-to-server delivery channel. When one mail server connects directly to the recipient domain’s MX server, that connection normally uses TCP 25. A VPS with outbound TCP 25 filtered cannot perform that final delivery itself, even if its mail software is configured correctly.

Authenticated submission is different. Your application or local mail server connects to a relay provider, proves its identity with credentials, and submits the message over a designated submission port. The relay then handles MX lookups, queueing, retries, reputation, bounce processing, and delivery to the recipient. This is usually safer and more reliable than operating a new outbound mail server from a small VPS.
Provider policies differ by product, account, region, and date. DigitalOcean currently states that “SMTP ports 25, 465, and 587 are blocked on Droplets to prevent spam and other abuses on our platform.” AWS blocks outbound port 25 by default on Lightsail and EC2, although AWS provides a process for requesting removal. Therefore, do not assume that 587 is open merely because it is the standard submission port; test from the actual VPS.

Choose the right delivery path
| Path | What leaves the VPS | When it makes sense | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Authenticated SMTP relay | A connection to the provider on 587, 2525, or 465 | Transactional mail, password resets, alerts, game-server notifications, and most VPS applications | Depends on a provider account, verified sender, and provider policies |
| Email API | HTTPS requests to the provider | Applications that already use an SDK or need structured event, template, and bounce data | Requires API integration rather than a generic SMTP configuration |
| Request removal of the port-25 block | Direct SMTP connections to recipient MX servers | AWS customers with a documented, controlled need to operate direct delivery | Approval is not immediate; you must manage reputation, DNS, abuse handling, and retries yourself |
For a normal application, start with an authenticated relay. Request a port-25 exception only when direct delivery is a deliberate operational requirement and you can run a complete mail-server program.
Configure an authenticated relay step by step
1. Verify a sending domain or sender identity
Create an account with a relay provider and add the domain or individual address that will appear in the From header. Complete the provider’s verification challenge before sending production mail. A verified identity prevents the relay from treating your message as unauthorized and lets you publish domain-authentication records.
Use a stable address such as [email protected] for automated messages and a monitored address for replies or delivery questions. Keep the visible From identity aligned with the domain you verified; do not assume that an arbitrary address will be accepted merely because SMTP authentication succeeded.
2. Create credentials with the smallest practical scope
Record the relay hostname, username, password or API token, and selected port. Keep these values outside source control. Environment variables or a secrets manager are appropriate for a VPS; never place a live password in a public repository, a client-side game build, a shell history file, or a web page.
SMTP_HOST=smtp.example-relay.invalid
SMTP_PORT=587
SMTP_USERNAME=your-relay-username
SMTP_PASSWORD=your-relay-secret
[email protected]
The hostname above is only a configuration shape, not a provider address. Use the hostname assigned by your provider. Postmark, for example, documents smtp.postmarkapp.com; it accepts its Server API Token as both the SMTP username and password.

3. Select the port and match the TLS mode
| Port | Encryption mode | Typical use | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| 587 | STARTTLS | Default authenticated submission | Connect in plain SMTP mode, issue STARTTLS, then authenticate inside the encrypted session |
| 2525 | Usually STARTTLS when the provider supports it | Fallback submission port | Useful when a VPS or network blocks 587; confirm the provider’s advertised TLS mode |
| 465 | Implicit TLS | Submission where the provider supports SMTPS | TLS starts immediately when the TCP connection opens; do not configure it as STARTTLS |
| 25 | Plain SMTP with optional STARTTLS, depending on the server | Server-to-server delivery or legacy relay configurations | Frequently filtered on VPS platforms and not the first choice for application submission |
A common cause of failure is using the right port with the wrong TLS mode. Port 587 or 2525 normally needs a STARTTLS-capable client; port 465 needs an implicit-TLS client. An implicit-TLS client pointed at 587 often reports a handshake or protocol error before authentication is attempted.
4. Configure the application or local MTA
Enter the provider hostname and credentials in your application’s SMTP settings. Set the connection security option explicitly rather than relying on an automatic mode whose behavior varies between libraries.
- Port 587: enable STARTTLS and certificate verification.
- Port 2525: enable STARTTLS if the provider documents it; otherwise follow that provider’s exact instructions.
- Port 465: select implicit TLS or SMTPS, not STARTTLS.
- Authentication: require SMTP authentication and use the credential format specified by the provider.
- Envelope and header identity: set a verified
Fromaddress and use a valid recipient address for testing.
If you operate Postfix, configure it as a relay client rather than attempting direct MX delivery. The exact parameter names depend on your distribution, but the required values are the relay host, submission port, TLS policy, authentication map, and verified sender. Restart or reload the service only after checking its configuration syntax, then inspect the mail log for the provider’s response.
5. Publish SPF, DKIM, and DMARC
SMTP credentials prove that your application can submit through the relay; DNS authentication helps recipient systems determine whether the message is authorized and whether its content was altered in transit.
- SPF: publish the provider’s required authorization record for your sending domain. Do not replace an existing SPF record with a second independent SPF record; combine mechanisms in the single record permitted by your DNS host.
- DKIM: add the selector and public key supplied by the relay. The provider signs outgoing messages with the corresponding private key.
- DMARC: publish a policy for your domain and specify a reporting address if you can process aggregate or forensic reports. Start with a policy appropriate to your domain’s existing legitimate senders, then tighten it after validating alignment.
DNS changes may be cached. Verify that the records resolve publicly before diagnosing a message as an authentication failure. Keep every legitimate sender—such as a separate support system or marketing platform—in the domain’s authentication plan.

6. Monitor delivery instead of treating SMTP acceptance as success
A successful SMTP submission means the relay accepted responsibility for the message; it does not guarantee inbox placement. Watch provider logs, bounce notifications, complaint events, and suppression lists. Remove invalid recipients, stop retrying permanent failures, and investigate repeated temporary failures. Keep application logs keyed by message ID rather than storing message content or credentials unnecessarily.
Relay options and documented connection details
| Provider | Documented ports and TLS | Authentication or API details | Identity and operational notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postmark | SMTP ports 25, 2525, and 587; encrypted SMTP options are documented | Its Server API Token can be used as both SMTP username and password; encrypted SMTP and API options are available | Verify the sender or domain and use the provider’s current connection instructions |
| Twilio SendGrid | STARTTLS on 587; implicit TLS on 465; 2525 is documented as a fallback when 25 or 587 is blocked | Use the authentication method and credentials issued for your account | Confirm the current sender-verification requirements before production sending |
| Amazon SES | AWS supplies an SMTP hostname and credentials; AWS examples use port 587 to avoid EC2 port-25 timeouts | Use the SMTP credentials generated for SES; API availability and exact limits depend on the SES product and account | Identity verification and account restrictions apply; check the current AWS regional documentation |
Current pricing, quotas, geographic availability, suppression behavior, and program eligibility are not fixed across all accounts. Verify those details in the provider’s documentation before choosing a service. The practical comparison for a blocked VPS is simpler: confirm that the provider offers a reachable submission port, supports the TLS mode your library can use, accepts your authentication method, and provides the delivery logs you need.
Test whether outbound SMTP is blocked
Run these checks from the VPS, not from your laptop. Substitute the relay hostname supplied by your provider.
- Resolve the hostname. Use your system’s resolver and confirm that it returns an address.
getent hosts smtp.example-relay.invalid
# or
nslookup smtp.example-relay.invalid
A DNS failure means the problem occurs before any port filter is involved. Check the VPS resolver configuration, firewall DNS rules, and the spelling of the hostname.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Test TCP reachability on the preferred port.
nc -vz -w 10 smtp.example-relay.invalid 587
A message such as succeeded or open confirms that the TCP handshake completed. A timeout usually indicates a provider, VPS firewall, security-group, or network-path filter. “Connection refused” means the address was reachable but no service accepted the connection, or an active firewall rejected it.

- Try the documented fallback.
nc -vz -w 10 smtp.example-relay.invalid 2525
nc -vz -w 10 smtp.example-relay.invalid 465
Do not infer that a successful connection on one port proves that another is open. Test each port you intend to use. If 587 times out but 2525 succeeds, configure the application for 2525 with the provider’s STARTTLS settings.
- Inspect a STARTTLS handshake on 587 or 2525.
openssl s_client -connect smtp.example-relay.invalid:587 -starttls smtp -servername smtp.example-relay.invalid
The output should show a certificate chain and a negotiated TLS session after the SMTP server advertises STARTTLS. Certificate verification errors can indicate a missing CA bundle, an incorrect hostname, an expired certificate, or TLS interception. Do not disable certificate verification as a permanent fix.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Inspect implicit TLS on 465.
openssl s_client -connect smtp.example-relay.invalid:465 -servername smtp.example-relay.invalid
For port 465, TLS negotiation begins immediately. Running the STARTTLS form against this port sends the wrong protocol sequence and can produce a misleading failure.
- Perform an authenticated send test.
Use a provider-supported SMTP test tool or your application’s staging configuration. Send to an address you control, record the returned message ID, and inspect both the provider event log and the recipient’s headers. A TCP test proves only that a socket can open; it does not validate credentials, sender authorization, message size, or account status.
Diagnose the most common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Connection times out | VPS provider, cloud firewall, security group, or upstream network blocks the port | Test 2525 or 465 if supported, check outbound firewall rules, and confirm the provider’s policy for the specific VPS product |
| Connection is refused immediately | Nothing is listening at that address and port, or an active rule rejected the connection | Recheck the hostname and port; test the provider’s documented alternatives |
| TLS handshake fails | STARTTLS was used on 465, implicit TLS was used on 587/2525, the hostname does not match the certificate, or a CA/interception problem exists | Match the TLS mode to the port, use the provider hostname, update the VPS CA bundle, and inspect the certificate chain |
| Authentication rejected | Wrong username, secret, token format, expired credential, or disabled SMTP access | Create or rotate the credential, copy it without trailing whitespace, and follow the provider’s required username format |
| Sender or From address rejected | The address or domain is not verified, or the account is restricted to approved identities | Complete sender/domain verification and use the exact verified address in the message’s From header |
| Message accepted but later bounced | Invalid recipient, policy rejection, mailbox failure, or provider suppression | Read the structured bounce reason, stop retrying permanent failures, and remove suppressed or invalid recipients |
| Mail reaches spam | Missing or misaligned SPF/DKIM/DMARC, poor recipient engagement, content issues, or a new sender reputation | Correct DNS authentication, align the visible From domain, send only to opted-in recipients, and monitor provider feedback |
Request AWS removal of the port-25 restriction
AWS documents an exception process for customers who genuinely need direct SMTP delivery from Lightsail or EC2. This is separate from using SES or another relay on port 587.

- Sign in as the AWS account root user and submit the email-sending-limitations request form.
- Describe the use case in operational detail, including expected message types, volume, recipient controls, and how you will prevent abuse.
- Provide the affected instance identifiers and regions. AWS also asks for optional static-IP and reverse-DNS information where applicable.
- Wait for review. AWS says processing may take up to 48 hours; approval is not guaranteed or instantaneous.
- Before sending directly, configure reverse DNS for the outbound IP and create a matching forward A record. The names should resolve consistently before you attempt SMTP delivery.
After approval, port 25 access still does not solve the operational work. You must maintain queue retries, handle recipient-MX throttling, publish and align SPF/DKIM/DMARC, monitor blocklists and bounces, protect the server from account abuse, and maintain a stable IP reputation. If those responsibilities are not part of your design, continue using an authenticated relay.

- Keep SMTP passwords and API tokens in a secrets manager or protected environment variables.
- Restrict outbound application access to the relay host and required ports where your firewall supports egress rules.
- Use certificate verification and the provider hostname; do not accept any certificate merely because a connection is encrypted.
- Rotate credentials after staff changes, suspected exposure, or provider security events.
- Rate-limit password-reset and notification endpoints so a bug cannot generate a mail flood.
- Use separate credentials or relay streams for production and testing when the provider supports them.
- Log SMTP response codes, provider message IDs, and bounce classifications, but avoid logging message bodies or secrets.
- Set timeouts and bounded retries in the application. A temporary SMTP failure should not cause unbounded duplicate sends.
- Verify SPF, DKIM, and DMARC after every DNS or provider change.
- Send only to recipients who expect the messages and honor unsubscribe, suppression, and deletion requests where applicable.
Practical decision guide
Use port 587 first
Choose 587 with STARTTLS when your VPS can reach it and your provider documents authenticated submission there. It is the clearest default for application mail and avoids direct MX delivery.
Use port 2525 when 587 is filtered
Choose 2525 when the relay supports it and a TCP test shows that 587 is blocked or unreachable. Keep STARTTLS enabled if that is the provider’s documented mode.
Use port 465 only with implicit TLS
Choose 465 when your provider supports it and your SMTP library has an explicit implicit-TLS or SMTPS setting. Do not simply change the number while leaving a STARTTLS configuration unchanged.
Choose an API when SMTP is a poor fit
An email API can be preferable when your application needs structured templates, event webhooks, or detailed delivery metadata and can make outbound HTTPS requests. It still requires identity verification, secret management, bounce handling, and domain authentication.
Recommended Free Tools
Request port 25 only for a managed direct-mail operation
An AWS exception is appropriate only when you have a documented reason to deliver directly and the people, DNS, monitoring, and abuse controls to operate that service. For ordinary VPS notifications, an authenticated relay is the faster and lower-risk solution.
