Spoiler: the answer to Wordle #1580

The answer was CATTY.

CATTY describes spiteful, malicious or backbiting remarks and behavior. For example, someone might make a catty comment about another person.

The word is spelled C-A-T-T-Y. Although it has only one of the five standard vowels—A—it also uses Y as a vowel in its final position. The repeated T is the main reason the puzzle could be deceptive: players may identify the letter but fail to place it twice.

How difficult was Wordle #1580?

One independent retrospective analysis reported an average of 4.6 guesses out of six among its testers and described the puzzle as moderately challenging. That figure is a publisher-specific tester average, not an official New York Times difficulty rating.

The challenge came from several features working together:

  • The repeated T: repeated letters are easy to miss when a first guess confirms only one instance.
  • A limited standard-vowel pattern: A is the only letter from A, E, I, O and U.
  • Y as a vowel: the final Y can make the word structure less obvious.
  • Many similar candidates: BATTY, PATTY, TATTY, NATTY and FATTY share much of the same pattern.

One Forbes solver reached CATTY in four guesses after trying SPIKE, ROACH and CANDY; that result reflects one player’s solving path rather than a universal score.

Why the vowel clue can be confusing

When Wordle coverage says that CATTY has “one vowel,” it usually means that the word contains only one of the standard vowels A, E, I and O, plus U. That is A in this case. Grammatically and phonetically, however, Y functions as a vowel in CATTY, so the phrase should not be read as “the word contains only one vowel sound.”

Was Wordle #1580 proof that the game is getting harder?

No. A single puzzle cannot establish that Wordle is becoming systematically more difficult. Daily answers vary, and available commentary on this puzzle specifically rejected drawing a general “Wordle is getting harder” conclusion from it alone.

Because CATTY was the answer for #1580, this article is a historical solution for October 16, 2025. Historical answer lists confirm its use for that puzzle, but they do not establish an official permanent no-repeat guarantee for every future Wordle.
