Make accessibility a requirement for your WordPress site from planning through every content and software update. Choose an accessibility-ready theme as a starting point, then inspect the theme’s templates, blocks, plugins, page-builder output and editorial content. Use semantic HTML, logical headings and landmarks, useful alternative text, sufficient contrast, resizable text, visible keyboard focus and controls that work without a mouse. Test representative pages with automated tools, keyboard-only navigation and assistive technology. This process can substantially improve access, but no theme label, plugin or overlay by itself proves that a site conforms to WCAG or satisfies a legal duty.

What WordPress accessibility means

An accessible WordPress site can be used by people with different visual, auditory, motor and cognitive abilities, including people who use screen readers, screen magnification, voice control, switch devices or keyboard navigation. Accessibility applies to four connected parts of a site:

  • Content: headings, links, images, video, audio, instructions and downloadable files must communicate their meaning in more than one way.
  • Code and structure: templates and blocks need valid, semantic HTML, correctly associated labels and predictable landmarks.
  • Interaction: menus, dialogs, carousels, forms, media players and other controls must be reachable and operable without a mouse.
  • Compatibility: the result must work with browsers and assistive technologies rather than merely looking correct in a visual browser.

The WordPress project’s target for integrated code is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. WordPress describes its goal as making the administration area and bundled themes fully compliant with WCAG 2.2 AA where possible. WCAG is the technical standard; a WordPress label or a scan is not a legal certification.

The U.S. Department of Justice has explained that inaccessible web content can deny people with disabilities equal access to information, goods and services. Legal duties depend on the organization, service and jurisdiction, so use the technical work below as an accessibility program rather than a promise that a site is universally ADA compliant.

Is an accessibility-ready theme enough?

No. The accessibility-ready designation is a useful baseline review of a theme, not a whole-site WCAG 2.2 AA evaluation. The WordPress Accessibility Team explicitly says that accessibility-ready does not mean a theme meets WCAG at Level AA. WordPress also cannot guarantee that every theme is compliant, and the plugin directory has no universal accessibility requirement for plugins.

What you are checking What the evidence can tell you What it cannot prove
Accessibility-ready theme label The theme passed a baseline review for specified requirements. That your installed version, settings, child theme, content and plugins conform to WCAG.
Automated scan Potentially detectable issues such as missing names, contrast failures or structural errors. That keyboard paths, announcements, timing and real-world assistive-technology use work correctly.
Plugin or overlay claim A vendor’s stated features or test scope. That generated markup, custom controls and third-party content are accessible on your site.
Documented WCAG evaluation Findings for the tested scope, date and conformance criteria. That later updates or untested templates remain conformant.

After activating a theme, inspect the actual site. A child theme, custom CSS, page builder, advertising script, membership flow or plugin can change the markup and behavior that was reviewed.

Plan accessibility before building

The WordPress Theme Handbook recommends treating accessibility as part of the project specification from the start. Add it to the same planning documents that define content types, performance, security and responsive behavior.

Define the site’s accessible experience

Write acceptance criteria in user terms: every function works with a keyboard; headings and landmarks provide a navigable outline; form fields have programmatic labels and useful errors; text and meaningful controls remain distinguishable at high zoom; media has appropriate alternatives; and dynamic updates are announced when necessary. For a video-game site, include the home page, game and platform archives, review posts, screenshot galleries, trailers, search, comments, newsletter forms and any account or purchase journey.

Inventory templates and dependencies

List every front-end template and reusable component, including the header, navigation, footer, search results, 404 page, modal, cookie notice, video player, carousel, embedded social post and advertising slot. Record the theme, child theme, page builder, plugins, custom blocks and scripts that produce each component. This inventory tells you what must be tested after an update.

Set ownership and an issue log

Give each finding an owner, severity, affected URL or component, proposed fix, verification method and status. Keep screenshots or code references where useful. An issue log prevents a recurring problem—such as an unlabeled icon button—from being rediscovered on every release.

Choose and verify a theme

Start with an accessibility-ready theme, but make the following checks on the version and configuration you will actually deploy.

Navigation and page structure

  • Confirm that a skip link appears when the keyboard user begins navigating and moves focus to the main content.
  • Check that the site has a consistent header, navigation, main-content and footer structure, with landmarks that have useful names when more than one of the same type exists.
  • Review heading order in the home page, archives and posts. A visual font size is not a substitute for a correctly nested heading level.
  • Ensure menus open, close and expose their state through the keyboard; a hover-only menu is not sufficient.

Focus, dialogs and responsive behavior

  • Tab through links, buttons, search, menus, forms and media controls. Focus must be visible and must not disappear behind a sticky header.
  • Open every dialog and notice where focus goes. A modal should move focus into the dialog, keep it there while open, provide an obvious close control and return focus to the triggering element.
  • Resize the viewport and increase text size. Content should reflow without clipping, overlapping or requiring two-dimensional scrolling for ordinary reading.
  • Inspect mobile navigation, accordions, tabs and carousels at narrow widths and with touch and keyboard input.

Contrast and controls

Check normal and large text, links, button labels, icons, focus indicators and other meaningful non-text controls against their backgrounds. Do not rely on a faint color change alone to show hover, focus, selected or error states. Test the actual palette, including dark mode, disabled-looking elements that are still actionable and text placed over game artwork.

Use semantic HTML before ARIA

Native HTML elements provide keyboard behavior and roles that assistive technology already understands. Use a real <button> for an action, an <a> element for navigation, a heading for a section title, a list for a list and a <label> associated with each form control. Add ARIA only when native HTML cannot express the required state or relationship, and test the result in an actual screen reader. Incorrect ARIA can override a correct native role or announce a control inaccurately.

Keep headings and landmarks logical

Give each page one clear main heading and organize subsections in a meaningful hierarchy. Do not choose a heading merely to obtain a particular font size; style the semantic heading with CSS instead. Use landmarks such as banner, navigation, main, complementary and contentinfo consistently. If a page has multiple navigation or complementary regions, provide names that distinguish them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give controls an accessible name and state

An icon-only button needs a programmatic name such as “Open search,” not an unlabeled SVG. A menu button should expose whether the menu is expanded. A carousel control should say which slide it selects. The visible label, accessible name and announced state should agree so a screen-reader or voice-control user can identify the same control that sighted users see.

Write accessible content

Headings and links

Use headings to divide a review into sections such as performance, accessibility settings and verdict, not to make a paragraph look bold. Link text should describe the destination or action. “Read the controller setup guide” is more useful out of context than “click here.” Avoid long strings of adjacent links with no separating text.

Alternative text for images

Write concise, useful alternative text for informative images. A screenshot in a game review might identify the scene or interface detail that the surrounding text discusses. Do not begin every description with “image of,” because the assistive technology already conveys that it is an image. If an image is purely decorative or its information is fully repeated in nearby text, use empty alternative text so a screen reader can skip it. Logos that function as links need alternative text identifying the linked destination.

Video, audio and animation

Provide captions for prerecorded video where applicable and a transcript when people need the spoken and relevant sound information in text. Do not autoplay audio. Give animated backgrounds and moving galleries a way to pause or stop when motion distracts or interferes with reading. Make sure the media player’s play, pause, volume, captions and full-screen controls are themselves keyboard accessible and labelled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color, language and plain instructions

Never communicate an instruction or status by color alone. “Items marked in red are unavailable” should also use text, an icon with an accessible name or another programmatic indication. Keep instructions specific, identify required fields, explain input formats and write error messages that tell a person how to recover. Expand unexplained abbreviations and identify a change of language when a page contains a substantial passage in another language.

Make every interaction work without a mouse

Keyboard access is one of the fastest high-value checks because it reveals missing focus management, inaccessible custom widgets and illogical document order.

  1. Load the page and press Tab repeatedly. Confirm that the first useful stop is a skip link or another sensible entry point.
  2. Operate every link and button with Enter or Space as appropriate. Do not require dragging, hovering or a precise pointer target.
  3. Open and close menus, accordions, dialogs, tabs, carousels, cookie notices and media controls. Check that focus moves to the new content and does not become trapped or lost.
  4. Complete each form, including a deliberately invalid submission. Confirm that focus reaches the problem, the error is announced or clearly associated with the field and the correction path is understandable.
  5. Continue tabbing until the footer, then reverse direction with Shift+Tab. Look for a logical order and a visible indicator at every stop.

Test with a real keyboard rather than assuming that a mouse-driven visual inspection represents keyboard behavior. Custom JavaScript widgets frequently appear usable until this pass.

Check visual presentation, zoom and reflow

Accessibility is not limited to color contrast. Increase text size and zoom, change the viewport width and inspect long titles, tables, image captions, cookie notices and embedded players. Content should remain readable and controls should not overlap, disappear behind fixed elements or become clipped. Check line spacing, text spacing and focus indicators against the chosen backgrounds. Test both light and dark presentations if the site offers them.

Non-text contrast matters for meaningful icons, input borders, focus indicators and selected states. A game-rating meter, difficulty badge or platform icon should remain distinguishable without relying on color. Decorative artwork can be visually subtle, but an icon that performs an action needs enough contrast and an accessible name.

Review plugins, page builders and custom blocks

Because the plugin directory has no general accessibility requirement, evaluate every plugin that outputs front-end content. Inspect its rendered HTML and interact with its controls rather than trusting an installation screen or marketing statement.

Common plugin risks

  • Icon buttons with no accessible name or with a name that never changes when the state changes.
  • Pop-ups that move focus visually but leave keyboard focus behind the overlay.
  • Carousels that advance automatically, cannot be paused or expose unlabeled slide controls.
  • Form fields whose visible labels are not programmatically associated, or errors shown only in red text.
  • Widgets that inject duplicate headings, invalid landmark nesting or empty links.
  • Third-party embeds whose player, comments or consent controls cannot be operated with a keyboard.

Disable, replace or have the component remediated when it introduces a barrier. An accessibility overlay may add controls, but it cannot reliably repair incorrect source order, missing alternative text, poor keyboard logic or inaccessible third-party content. Fix the underlying template or plugin output whenever possible.

Test the page-builder workflow

Editors need accessible defaults as well as accessible front-end output. Check whether the builder encourages proper heading levels, exposes alternative-text fields, preserves link names and allows a caption or transcript. Document a content workflow so an editor cannot accidentally turn a meaningful image into a decorative one or paste a heading level that breaks the outline.

Test in layers

No single test method finds every issue. Use the following sequence on representative templates rather than scanning only the home page.

Test layer Best at finding Limit
Automated checker Missing labels or names, some contrast failures, duplicate IDs, structural and attribute errors. Cannot judge whether alternative text is useful, whether focus order makes sense or whether a widget works in context.
Keyboard-only pass Unreachable controls, invisible focus, illogical order, traps and broken dialogs or menus. Does not reveal every screen-reader announcement or visual comprehension problem.
Screen reader or other assistive technology Heading and landmark navigation, names and states, announcements, reading order and form errors. Results vary by browser, operating system, device and assistive technology; one successful combination is not universal proof.
Human content review Meaningful alternative text, understandable instructions, captions, transcripts and color-independent communication. Needs a repeatable checklist and people who understand the content and audience.

Run an automated scan as a defect list

Scan a representative set: the home page, a post, an archive, search results, a form, a media-rich page, a dialog or menu state and a mobile view. Triage each result, remove false positives, fix the source component and rerun the scan. A clean report is not proof of WCAG conformance.

Use assistive technology deliberately

Navigate by headings and landmarks, locate links and buttons by their announced names, fill forms, open dynamic content and listen for status updates. Record the browser, operating system and assistive technology used so another tester can reproduce a finding. Include people who use assistive technology in usability testing when the project allows it; technical checks and lived experience catch different problems.

Maintain accessibility after launch

Accessibility changes whenever content, code or dependencies change. Add an accessibility check to theme, plugin, template and content release procedures. Re-test shared components after updates even if the visible design appears unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep the issue log current and assign a person responsible for each fix.
  • Retest corrected issues and run regression checks on the templates that share the component.
  • Review new posts, images, videos and downloadable documents before publication.
  • Monitor third-party embeds and advertising scripts for changes in keyboard behavior, focus or contrast.
  • Provide a clearly findable way for visitors to report an accessibility barrier, and record the page, task and technology involved when they do.
  • Train editors and developers on heading structure, alternative text, labels, focus management and accessible media.

Prioritize barriers that block a task completely—such as an unreachable checkout or trapped dialog—then address repeated issues in shared templates before isolated cosmetic defects.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Specify: adopt WCAG 2.2 Level AA as the technical target for the scope you control and write user-focused acceptance criteria.
  2. Inventory: map templates, blocks, plugins, embeds, forms and content types, including the page-builder components used by editors.
  3. Select: choose an accessibility-ready theme, then inspect navigation, headings, skip links, focus, forms, dialogs, contrast and reflow in the deployed configuration.
  4. Build: use semantic HTML, native controls, logical landmarks and heading levels before adding ARIA.
  5. Publish: add meaningful alternative text, captions or transcripts, descriptive links and color-independent instructions.
  6. Exercise: operate every interactive element by keyboard and test focus, dialogs, menus, carousels and forms.
  7. Scan: run automated checks on representative pages and treat the findings as items to verify and fix.
  8. Listen: test with a screen reader or another assistive technology, checking names, states, order and announcements.
  9. Record: log issues with owners, severity, scope and verification steps; fix shared components first.
  10. Regress: repeat the relevant checks after updates and give visitors a route to report barriers.

How to evaluate accessibility tools or services

When comparing a theme, plugin, audit or monitoring service, ask questions that reveal its real scope rather than relying on the word accessible.

Evaluation area Questions to ask
Keyboard and focus Are every control, dialog and menu reachable, operable and visibly focused? Are focus entry, containment and return documented?
Semantics Does the output preserve meaningful HTML, heading structure, landmarks, labels and accessible names?
Forms and errors Are required fields, instructions, validation messages and recovery steps associated and announced?
Visual presentation Are text and non-text contrast, zoom, reflow, spacing and clipping tested in the actual configuration?
Assistive technology Which browsers, screen readers and devices were tested, and are the results documented?
Compatibility Does it work with your theme, page builder, plugins, embeds and custom blocks without changing source order or behavior?
Workflow Does it provide repeatable testing, remediation guidance, issue tracking and regression checks?
Evidence and upkeep Is the claim a baseline review, an automated scan or a documented WCAG evaluation? What scope, date and update process apply?

These questions help distinguish a useful development aid from a claim that exceeds what a tool can establish. The final responsibility remains with the site owner and the people who create, test and maintain the site.

What to remember

  • An accessibility-ready theme is a starting point, not a whole-site certification.
  • Plugins, overlays and page builders can introduce barriers, so inspect their generated markup and behavior.
  • Keyboard access, logical headings, labels, useful alternative text, contrast, visible focus and responsive text are high-value checks.
  • Automated results must be combined with human keyboard and assistive-technology testing.
  • Accessibility is an ongoing maintenance practice because content, themes, plugins and third-party services change.
