For most WordPress sites, the built-in Block Editor is all you need. It is the Gutenberg-based editor included in WordPress core since WordPress 5.0. The separately installed Gutenberg plugin is an earlier, faster-moving channel for editor features that may not yet be in your WordPress version, plus testing and feedback work.
Installing the plugin is therefore optional, not a prerequisite for block editing. Use the core editor for a normal production site unless you have a specific reason to test an upcoming feature, reproduce an editor issue, or help evaluate Gutenberg development. Because the plugin can change independently of your WordPress release, test it on a staging copy before enabling it on a live site.

What the built-in Block Editor is
The Block Editor is the Gutenberg-derived editing interface shipped with WordPress core. Gutenberg was merged into WordPress 5.0 in December 2018, so every supported WordPress installation from 5.0 onward includes block editing without installing a separate editor plugin.

In the editor, a page or post is assembled from discrete blocks such as Paragraph, Heading, Image, Gallery, Video, Quote, List, and Embed. Blocks are stored as structured content rather than as one undifferentiated text field. Themes and plugins can extend the editor by registering their own blocks, controls, styles, and editing APIs.

The version bundled with core is tied to the WordPress release you run. It is the version tested and supported as part of that release, including the fixes delivered through its point releases. You do not need to track a second editor update stream to create ordinary posts, pages, templates, or navigation menus.
What the Gutenberg plugin is
The Gutenberg plugin is a separately installed WordPress plugin maintained in the WordPress project. Its purpose is to deliver newer editor work before that work is selected for a future WordPress release. The plugin description characterizes it as a way to test bleeding-edge features, explore blocks, and provide feedback.
That makes the plugin a development and preview channel rather than a replacement editor. It uses the same Gutenberg project that supplies the core Block Editor, but its release number advances independently. A plugin release can therefore contain capabilities, interface changes, or fixes that are not present in the version embedded in your current WordPress installation.

You are adding a newer build of the same project, with the practical trade-off that newer work has had less time to be exercised across every theme, custom block, meta box, and third-party editor extension.
How core and plugin versions relate
Each major WordPress release takes a particular snapshot of Gutenberg. The plugin continues to move after that snapshot, so the two numbers should not be expected to match. The official WordPress version table, updated in 2026, lists these pairings:

The table is a mapping, not a promise that every site has identical behavior. Your active theme, WordPress point release, block API versions, custom blocks, and other plugins can all alter what you see. A plugin update can also change the editor while the underlying WordPress core version stays unchanged.

When installing the plugin makes sense
You need an upcoming feature before your core upgrade
If a feature documented for a future WordPress release is important to a project now, the plugin can provide an early look. Treat that feature as subject to change: labels, controls, markup, and behavior may differ by the time it reaches core.

Issue reports often need the exact WordPress and Gutenberg versions involved. Testing with the current plugin can show whether a problem has already been fixed, changed, or remains reproducible. Record the WordPress version, plugin version, active theme, block API version, and other editor-related plugins when you test.
You contribute testing or feedback
Developers, site builders, and experienced users can use the plugin to exercise new blocks and workflows and report problems to the Gutenberg project. This is useful when you can test safely and describe a reproducible result; it is not a reason to expose an untested build to visitors on a critical site.
You maintain a compatibility matrix
Agencies and plugin authors may run the plugin in a dedicated test environment to check custom blocks, editor scripts, styles, and integrations against forthcoming changes. The value is early warning, not a blanket claim that the plugin is faster or better for every site.
When the core editor is the better choice
Your site is a normal production installation
If authors need dependable post and page editing and you do not need an unreleased capability, stay with the editor included in WordPress core. It reduces the number of moving parts and keeps the editor aligned with the WordPress version you support.

Traditional meta boxes, custom fields, legacy JavaScript, and blocks built for older Block API versions can influence how the post editor loads. A newer plugin build may expose incompatibilities before your team is ready to address them.

You cannot maintain a staging and rollback process
Do not use a bleeding-edge channel on a site that cannot be backed up, staged, monitored, and restored. The plugin’s value comes from controlled testing; without that control, its additional update stream creates avoidable operational risk.
How to test Gutenberg safely on a staging site
Use a staging clone that matches production as closely as possible, including the WordPress version, active theme, custom blocks, editor extensions, and representative content. Then follow this sequence:
- Make a restorable copy. Take a database and files backup, and verify that the restore procedure works before changing the editor.
- Record the baseline. Note the WordPress version, active theme, PHP environment managed by your host, block-related plugins, custom block API versions, and any traditional meta boxes. Capture screenshots or test notes for important editorial workflows.
- Install the plugin. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New, search for “Gutenberg,” select the official Gutenberg plugin, choose Install Now, and then Activate. If your organization distributes plugins another way, use the package approved for that staging environment.
- Exercise representative content. Open existing posts and pages, create a new draft, edit reusable patterns or template parts if the site uses them, upload media, preview, schedule, and publish a test item. Check both the editor and the front end.
- Test integrations. Verify custom blocks, block variations, inspector controls, server-rendered output, shortcodes, SEO fields, revision behavior, autosaves, and every meta box authors rely on.
- Check browser and role coverage. Repeat key tasks with the browsers and user roles used by your editorial team. Note console errors, failed network requests, missing controls, and unexpected layout changes.
- Decide by evidence. Keep the plugin only if the specific feature or diagnostic result justifies the additional maintenance. Otherwise deactivate it on staging and leave production on core.
There is no universal benchmark proving that the plugin is faster, safer, or more accessible than the core editor. Those outcomes depend on the WordPress version, theme, blocks, meta boxes, and other plugins, so a site-specific staging test is the appropriate way to evaluate them.
Theme, block, and meta-box compatibility
The editor’s behavior is determined by more than the editor package itself. A block theme and a classic theme expose different capabilities; custom blocks can depend on particular APIs; and plugins that register traditional meta boxes can change how the post editor is assembled.
The iframe post editor in WordPress 6.3
WordPress 6.3 introduced an iframe-based post editor when all registered blocks use Block API version 3 or higher and no traditional meta boxes are present. The iframe isolates the editor canvas so its styles and scripts more closely resemble the front end. Blocks intended to work in that environment must load compatible assets and avoid assumptions that the editor canvas shares the parent document.
The decision change in WordPress 7.0
WordPress 7.0 changed the decision process to evaluate the blocks used in post content. That means the presence or absence of compatible blocks in the content can affect whether the iframe is selected, rather than relying only on a site-wide registration check.

Gutenberg 23.6 and WordPress 7.1
Gutenberg 23.6, the version mapped to WordPress 7.1.x in the official table, always uses the iframe for the post editor. A block that worked when scripts or styles were loaded globally may need adjustments when the editor canvas is isolated. Test editing, previews, drag-and-drop behavior, selection controls, and front-end rendering after any change in this area.
Traditional meta boxes
Legacy meta boxes can prevent an iframe arrangement or otherwise affect the editor layout and data flow. If an editor control disappears after enabling the plugin, check whether it is supplied by a meta-box extension and whether that extension declares compatibility with the WordPress and Gutenberg versions you are testing.
Installing, disabling, and removing the plugin
Installation
- Sign in to an administrator account on the staging site.
- Go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for the official Gutenberg plugin.
- Select Install Now, then Activate.
- Open the editor and confirm the plugin version in the Plugins screen before recording test results.
Disabling after a test
Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins, find Gutenberg, and choose Deactivate. The site then falls back to the editor supplied by WordPress core. Reopen representative content and confirm that the editing and front-end workflows you need still behave as expected.
Removing it
After deactivation, use Delete if you no longer need the plugin files. Keep your backup and test notes until you have confirmed the staging result and, if applicable, completed the production change through your normal deployment process. Do not use deletion as a substitute for resolving a block or theme compatibility problem.

A feature appears in documentation but not in the editor
Check the WordPress core version and the active Gutenberg plugin version. The feature may be planned for a later release, limited to the plugin channel, disabled behind an experiment, or dependent on a block theme or capability that your site does not provide.

The editor shows a blank canvas or broken styles
Test with the plugin disabled to establish whether the change is plugin-specific. Then inspect browser console errors, confirm that block editor assets are enqueued correctly, and test with a default theme on staging. If the issue disappears with the default theme, compare the theme’s editor styles and iframe handling.

A custom block works outside the iframe but fails inside it
Verify that the block declares the appropriate Block API version and that editor and front-end assets are loaded in the iframe context. Avoid relying on selectors or JavaScript globals from the parent document. Test both the edit component and saved or server-rendered output.
A meta box or custom field is missing
Confirm that its plugin is active and compatible with the WordPress version under test. Check whether the meta box forces a non-iframe editor or requires an integration update. Do not remove the field plugin from production while troubleshooting on a copy.
Only one post fails while other posts open normally
Compare the failing post’s blocks with a working post. WordPress 7.0 and later can consider the blocks present in post content when choosing the editor mode, so a particular block, embed, or legacy element may trigger the difference.
The team sees different controls from one account to another
Compare roles, user preferences, enabled experiments, and plugin access. Reproduce with the same account and browser before concluding that the core and plugin editors differ.
Gutenberg’s roadmap and why the plugin changes first
The Gutenberg project has been organized around four broad phases:
- Phase 1 — easier editing: introduced the Block Editor in WordPress 5.0.
- Phase 2 — customization: expanded Site Editing, block themes, templates, styles, and block-based tools.
- Phase 3 — collaboration: the current focus in the 2026 roadmap, including smoother collaborative and publishing workflows.
- Phase 4 — multilingual work: the longer-term phase for broader multilingual capabilities.
The plugin is where project participants can encounter portions of this roadmap before a specific set is selected for a WordPress core release. Core remains the curated snapshot intended for broad production use; the plugin lets the project gather feedback and resolve compatibility issues earlier.
Do you actually want the Classic Editor?
The Block Editor, WordPress Editor, and Gutenberg Editor are names used for the current interface. If you need the pre-5.0 editing screen, installing Gutenberg is the wrong solution: the Classic Editor is maintained as a separate plugin. Choose that route only when a workflow or integration genuinely requires the older interface, and test the effect on custom fields, shortcodes, revisions, and author permissions before changing a live site.

- Choose the core editor when the site is production-critical, authors need standard block editing, and no unreleased capability is required.
- Use Gutenberg on staging when you need to test an upcoming feature, investigate a reported editor defect, or check a custom block against future changes.
- Use Gutenberg in production only with a documented reason, a tested backup and rollback path, and an owner who will monitor updates and compatibility.
- Use Classic Editor instead when the requirement is specifically the pre-5.0 interface.
The deciding question is not whether Gutenberg exists in WordPress—it does. The question is whether your site benefits enough from the plugin’s earlier, changing code to justify testing and maintaining a second editor release stream.
