WordPress Block Themes: What They Are and How to Use Them

WordPress block themes extend block editing to the entire site. Learn the Appearance > Editor workflow, templates, template parts, patterns, Styles, Navigation, theme.json, and when a classic theme remains the better fit.

A WordPress block theme lets you edit the entire site with blocks—not just the text area of a post. Headers, footers, navigation, page-type layouts, colors, typography, and reusable sections are managed from Appearance > Editor after the block theme is active. That changes the job of a theme from a mainly PHP-driven shell into a visual, site-wide editing system.

This guide reflects the current WordPress interface and documentation available in October 2026. Block themes arrived in WordPress 5.9; labels and capabilities can continue to change between WordPress releases.

What a WordPress block theme is

WordPress defines a block theme as a theme that uses blocks for every major part of a site, including navigation menus, the header, content, and the site footer. In a classic theme, the block editor is primarily where you write a post or page. In a block theme, blocks also describe the site shell and the templates that determine how different types of content are displayed.

The practical scope is the important distinction. You can open the Site Editor to change a header, footer, navigation menu, archive layout, search-results layout, single-post template, or 404 page without editing a PHP template file. The same block-based interface controls global colors, typography, spacing, and layout settings. Widgets are replaced by blocks, and the Customizer is generally unavailable unless a plugin or the theme specifically activates it.

Block themes were introduced in WordPress 5.9. They are therefore not a separate WordPress product or a page-builder plugin; they are a theme type that uses WordPress’s block and Site Editor systems.

Before changing a live site

Changing a block theme can affect the structure of the whole site, not just one page. WordPress recommends trying a theme on a test site before making substantial production changes. A staging copy or other test installation lets you inspect templates, navigation, and responsive layouts without immediately changing what visitors see.

  • Confirm that you are comfortable with the block editor’s basic actions: selecting a block, opening its settings, moving it, and saving a change.
  • Identify which parts of the current site are controlled by the theme, a plugin, or custom code. A block theme can replace theme-controlled structure, but it does not automatically reproduce every custom feature from a classic theme.
  • Record important navigation labels, footer content, and template-specific arrangements before switching. This gives you a reference when the new theme’s templates are different.
  • Use a test site first when the site has many posts, custom templates, or a team that depends on the Customizer or classic widgets.

How to install and activate a block theme

The official Themes directory identifies themes that support the Site Editor. Use this four-step path:

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Appearance > Themes > Add New.
  2. Select the Block Themes filter to browse compatible themes.
  3. Install the theme you want and activate it.
  4. Open Appearance > Editor. The Editor entry becomes available after a block theme is active.

Activation gives you the theme’s starting templates, template parts, patterns, and design settings. It does not mean that every existing page has been permanently rewritten. The displayed result depends on the template assigned to that content and on any changes saved in the Site Editor.

Finding your way around the Site Editor

The Site Editor is the central workspace for a block theme. Its sidebar exposes the major objects you will edit: site identity, Styles, Pages, Navigation, Patterns, and Templates. The exact arrangement of controls can evolve, but the underlying jobs remain distinct.

Styles: global design rules

Use Styles to set the visual rules that should apply across the site. Depending on the theme’s available settings, this includes global colors, typography, layout, and styles for individual block types. You can open Styles while viewing a template or template part, adjust a setting, and see the effect in the editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Global settings are useful when you want consistency. For example, changing the site’s typography or color palette in Styles can update the blocks that inherit those rules instead of requiring you to edit every heading or paragraph separately. A block can still have its own block-level style when the design calls for an exception. Treat global choices as the baseline and local block settings as deliberate overrides.

Navigation: menus as blocks

The Navigation area manages menus through the Navigation block and its related controls. You can edit the menu items and place the Navigation block in a header or another template part. Because the menu is part of the block-based site structure, you can see its position and surrounding blocks while working on the header rather than managing a separate classic-menu screen.

When a theme supplies more than one navigation arrangement, check which header or template part the menu belongs to before changing it. Editing the Navigation block in a reused header changes the menu wherever that header is included.

Templates: layouts for content types

Templates are the layouts WordPress uses for classes of content. A block theme can expose templates for a single post, a page, an archive, search results, and a 404 response, among other page types. Open Appearance > Editor > Templates to review the available layouts, then select one to edit or create a new layout where the interface allows it.

A template usually contains blocks such as a header or footer template part, a content placeholder, post metadata, archive results, and navigation controls. The individual post or page supplies the content; the template supplies the surrounding structure and presentation.

There is an important scope rule: when you save a template edit, WordPress applies that change to every post or page that uses the template. A change made while looking at one post is not automatically a one-off change for that post. If only one piece of content needs a special arrangement, edit that content’s own blocks or use a separate template rather than changing a shared template unintentionally.

Saved editor changes take precedence over the template file bundled with the theme. This means a later theme update does not simply replace a template that you have customized in the Site Editor; the saved editor version is the version WordPress uses.

Template parts: headers, footers, and other repeated regions

Template parts are reusable structural regions. A header, footer, or sidebar is a typical template part. Instead of rebuilding the same group of blocks in every template, you edit the part once and include it wherever that region is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To edit a header or footer, open the template that displays it, select the header or footer template part, and open that part for editing. You can also reach reusable structural pieces from the Site Editor’s template and pattern management areas, depending on the WordPress version and theme. Add or rearrange blocks inside the part, then save it.

Because the part is reused, one saved change can affect every template that includes it. This is the efficient way to keep a site-wide header or footer consistent, but it is also why you should check the list of templates that use a part before making a major structural change.

Patterns: reusable sections and layouts

A pattern is a reusable arrangement of blocks for a section or layout. It might represent a callout, a feature grid, a hero area, or another repeatable content composition. Patterns can be inserted into pages or templates without recreating each block manually.

Manage them at Appearance > Editor > Patterns. WordPress documents pattern and template-part management in the Site Editor sidebar as available since WordPress 6.3.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Theme patterns are supplied by the theme and are locked. To change one, duplicate it and edit the copy. User-created patterns can be edited, renamed, duplicated, exported as JSON, or deleted. JSON pattern files can also be imported. This distinction matters when you want to preserve the original design supplied by the theme while maintaining your own editable version.

Choose the object based on its purpose:

  • Use a template part for a repeated structural region such as a header or footer.
  • Use a pattern for a reusable content or layout section that can be inserted in multiple places.
  • Use a template when you are defining the page-type layout that surrounds content such as a single post, archive, search result, or 404 page.

Editing a header or footer without touching code

Headers and footers are usually template parts, so the safest workflow is to edit the shared part rather than copying its blocks into individual templates.

  1. Open Appearance > Editor with the block theme active.
  2. Open Templates and choose a template that displays the region you want to change, or open the relevant template part from the Site Editor’s reusable areas.
  3. Select the header or footer and open it for editing.
  4. Change the blocks inside it—such as site identity, navigation, text, or other available blocks.
  5. Save the template part, then inspect more than one template that uses it.

If the change appears in several page types, that is the expected result of editing a shared template part. If a page does not change, it may use a different template or a different template part.

How template edits affect existing content

Templates are shared layouts, not copies attached to one post. Editing a single-post template changes the presentation of all posts that use that template. Editing an archive template changes the archive views that use it, and editing the 404 template changes the site’s not-found page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When troubleshooting an unexpected result, first identify the content’s active template. Then check whether the visible area comes from a template part. Finally, look for a saved Site Editor customization: the saved editor version takes precedence over the theme’s bundled template file. This sequence separates a content-level issue from a shared-layout issue.

What theme.json controls

theme.json is the central configuration file for a block theme’s editor settings and global styles. It is aimed at developers and advanced site builders rather than casual editing in the dashboard.

The file can enable or configure controls for color, typography, spacing, and layout. It can define palettes, gradients, duotone filters, and fonts; add custom CSS properties; and set styles that appear in both the front-end site and the WordPress editors. The documented top-level areas include settings, styles, customTemplates, templateParts, and patterns.

For example, a theme author can use the settings area to decide which design controls are exposed to editors, then use styles to establish the defaults those controls apply. Template and pattern declarations describe additional structures the theme makes available. The result is a coordinated design system rather than a collection of unrelated block-level choices.

Direct editing requires basic JSON and CSS familiarity. A malformed value can prevent the intended setting from working, and an overly broad style rule can affect many blocks. Make a copy of the file and test changes on a non-production site before deploying them. For routine visual adjustments, use the Site Editor’s Styles interface instead of editing the configuration file by hand.

Block themes versus classic themes

Neither theme model is universally better. The right choice depends on who needs to edit the site and which WordPress systems the site already relies on.

Decision axis Block theme Classic theme
Site-wide editing Blocks in the Site Editor can edit headers, footers, navigation, templates, and styles. Site structure is primarily managed through PHP templates, widgets, menus, and Customizer workflows.

A practical workflow for building a site with blocks

1. Establish the global design

Start in Styles with the colors, typography, and layout settings that should be shared. This prevents you from manually correcting the same visual choices in every template.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Configure the shared shell

Edit the header and footer template parts. Place the Navigation block where visitors should find the menu, and confirm the site identity and other repeated elements appear in the intended order.

3. Review page-type templates

Open the single-post, page, archive, search, and 404 templates that the theme provides. Check whether each has the content blocks and metadata your site needs. Remember that a saved template affects every piece of content using it.

4. Build repeatable sections as patterns

When a section will be reused but is not part of the permanent site shell, create or duplicate a pattern. Keep structural elements in template parts and content compositions in patterns so future editors know where to make a change.

5. Test representative content

View at least one single post, one page, an archive, a search result, and the 404 page. This reveals template-specific problems that are invisible when you inspect only the front page. Recheck the navigation and shared header or footer after saving.

Common problems and fixes

The Editor menu is missing

The Site Editor is available only when a block theme is active. Open Appearance > Themes and verify that the active theme is a block theme, then return to Appearance > Editor. A classic theme will normally expose its traditional settings instead.

A theme pattern cannot be changed

Theme patterns are locked because they are supplied by the theme. Duplicate the pattern, then edit the duplicate as a user pattern. The copy can be renamed and managed independently.

A change affected too many pages

You probably edited a shared template or template part. Templates apply to all content that uses them, while template parts can appear in multiple templates. Undo the change if appropriate, or create a separate template or content-level arrangement for the exceptional page.

The site still shows the old layout

Check whether a saved Site Editor version is taking precedence over the theme’s bundled file. Also confirm that you edited the template actually used by the page and that the visible region is not coming from a different template part.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Customizer or widgets are not available

This is generally expected with a block theme. Block themes use the Site Editor and blocks for site structure. If a specific plugin or theme needs the Customizer, it must activate that interface; otherwise, look for the equivalent setting in Styles, Navigation, Templates, template parts, or block settings.

Version milestones to keep in mind

  • WordPress 5.9: block themes were introduced.
  • WordPress 6.3: the Site Editor sidebar began documenting management of patterns and template parts.
  • Documentation dates: WordPress’s block-theme documentation page was updated June 24, 2026, while the pattern and template-part documentation cited here was updated June 5, 2025.

Because WordPress continues to refine labels and editor screens, follow the current dashboard path shown by your installation. The durable concepts are the separation between templates, template parts, patterns, global Styles, and Navigation.

Choosing whether to move from a classic theme

Migration is primarily a workflow decision. A block theme is a strong fit when non-developers need to edit headers, footers, navigation, and page-type layouts directly. It is a less straightforward fit when a site depends on classic widgets, Customizer settings, or PHP templates that have no block-based replacement.

  • Move toward a block theme if whole-site visual editing, reusable patterns, and centralized Styles solve a real maintenance problem.
  • Evaluate carefully first if the site uses extensive classic theme APIs, bespoke PHP templates, or a team trained around the Customizer.
  • Prototype before switching whenever the existing site has many templates or important custom layouts.

The safest adoption path is incremental: activate the candidate theme on a test site, inspect its templates and template parts, recreate essential navigation and shared content, and test representative page types before making the production switch.
