First make the error visible, then verify that the pack installed its Forge server files, is using Java 8, and has accepted the EULA. SkyFactory 4 is a Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack; its latest CurseForge release is 4.2.4 (project update December 13, 2021), and its server files are separate from a client installation.

The fastest reliable sequence is: use the official server pack in a clean folder, run the supplied installer, start the generated Forge server once, set eula=true, confirm the script calls 64-bit Java 8, and launch it from Command Prompt or PowerShell so the error and logs remain visible. If the console stays running but players cannot join, troubleshoot the Forge process, port, firewall, and version matching separately.

Confirm that you have the right SkyFactory 4 files
A client instance and a dedicated server are not interchangeable. The server needs the server-pack installer, Forge libraries, the mod directory, configuration files, scripts, and the files generated during first launch. Copying only a client’s mods folder or starting the ordinary Minecraft server jar produces a different installation.
Use the current pack version consistently
CurseForge lists SkyFactory 4 version 4.2.4 for Minecraft 1.12.2. Both the server and every client that connects should use that same release. A server made from one pack version and a client using another can fail with missing-mod messages, registry errors, or a connection that drops during login.

Keep the server in its own directory
Create a directory used only by the server, such as C:MinecraftSkyFactory4-Server on Windows or ~/skyfactory4-server on Linux. Do not run the server inside a client profile, and do not mix files from an older installation into the new directory. A clean directory makes it possible to identify which Forge jar, scripts, configuration, and logs are actually being used.
Obtain Forge and pack files from trusted sources
Use the SkyFactory 4 server files from the project’s CurseForge Files area. If you must obtain Forge separately, the Forge support community identifies files.minecraftforge.net as the official Forge source. Avoid downloading a random “fixed” server jar from an unverified file host; it can be the wrong Minecraft version or contain altered files.

The supplied installation script normally prepares the Forge server. On Windows it is usually install.bat; on Linux or another Unix-like system it is usually install.sh. Run the script from the server directory rather than double-clicking a copy located elsewhere.
- Open the server directory and run
install.bator make the Unix script executable withchmod +x install.sh, then run./install.sh. - Wait for the installer to finish creating the Forge server files and libraries. Do not interrupt it when a download appears to pause briefly.
- Start the generated Forge server once. This first run normally creates
eula.txtand may stop immediately because the agreement has not been accepted. - Open
eula.txt, change the line to exactlyeula=true, save it, and run the configuredServerStart.bator Unix startup script again.
If eula.txt never appears, the installer did not complete, the process lacks write permission, or you are launching from a different directory than you think. Check the path printed by the command prompt and confirm that the account running the server can create files there.
Why the batch file may close immediately after installation
A disappearing ServerStart.bat window commonly means the script encountered an error before you could read it. It can also mean the EULA step was skipped or that the script called a Java executable that is missing or incompatible. The window closing is a symptom, not the diagnosis; run the script from an existing terminal as described below.
Verify the Java runtime the server really uses
SkyFactory 4 targets the Minecraft 1.12.2 generation, and Java 8 is the compatibility baseline reported across SkyFactory 4 server cases. Reports include Java 8u201, OpenJDK 8u362 and 8u392, and other Java 8 installations. Newer Java releases may work in some environments, but they are not the safe starting point for this pack.

Check Java from the same context as the server
Open Command Prompt or PowerShell in the server directory and run:
java -versionOn Linux, run the same command in the shell that launches the server. Record the complete output. It should identify a Java 8 runtime; seeing Java 17, Java 21, or a “command not found” message means the startup script is not using the expected runtime.
Check the executable selected by the script
A system can have several Java versions installed. The java command in your interactive terminal may resolve to a different executable from the one used by ServerStart.bat. Open the batch file in a text editor and inspect its command. If it contains only java, replace that ambiguous command with the full path to a 64-bit Java 8 executable, for example:
"C:Program FilesJavajre1.8.0_xxxbinjava.exe" -Xms4G -Xmx6G -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2860.jar noguiUse the actual directory and Forge jar name present in your installation; xxx above is illustrative, not a filename to copy literally. Keep the memory values already supplied by your pack unless you have a reason to change them. On Linux, use the absolute path in the script, such as /usr/lib/jvm/.../bin/java, with the path matching the Java 8 installation on that machine.

A 32-bit runtime cannot address large heap settings and may fail before Forge loads. Confirm that the installed Java is 64-bit before assigning a multi-gigabyte heap. If the script requests more memory than the machine can provide, reduce the values temporarily so the process can start, then adjust after checking actual system capacity. A memory error is different from a missing-mod or EULA error; capture the exact message instead of changing several settings at once.
Keep the startup error visible
Forge support moderator DaemonUmbra’s guidance for a window that immediately disappears is to run the jar manually and provide the output. The same method works for SkyFactory 4: launch from an already-open terminal so the process cannot hide its final lines.

Windows procedure
- Press
Win, typecmd, and open Command Prompt. PowerShell works as well. - Change to the server directory, for example
cd /d C:MinecraftSkyFactory4-Server. - Run
ServerStart.batby typing its filename and pressing Enter. - If the script itself fails before launching Forge, run the Forge command shown inside the script, or run the generated Forge jar with the Java 8 executable specified by the script.
- Copy the complete console output, including the first error and the final stack trace. Do not report only “it closes.”
Linux procedure
- Open a shell and change to the server directory with
cd ~/skyfactory4-server. - Ensure the script is executable:
chmod +x ServerStart.shor the filename supplied by the pack. - Run it in the foreground with
./ServerStart.sh. If the pack supplies onlyinstall.sh, run that installer first and then use the generated startup script. - Leave the terminal open and save the output when the process stops.
Collect the useful logs
Look in the server’s logs directory for latest.log and, when generated, debug.log. The console shows the immediate failure; latest.log usually provides the sequence leading to it; debug.log can add detail for mod-loading and registry problems. Capture logs from the failed run, not an old installation, and note the date and time of the attempt.
Identify the failure from the symptom
“ServerStart.bat opens and closes”
Run it from Command Prompt first. If the output says the EULA has not been accepted, edit eula.txt and retry. If it reports that Java is not recognized, points to a nonexistent executable, or shows a Java version other than 8, correct the path in the script. If it stops while downloading or extracting Forge libraries, rerun the installer in the clean server folder and verify write permission and network access.
Do not solve a hidden error by adding random pauses to the batch file. A pause can leave the message on screen, but it does not repair the installation. The message in the console and the corresponding lines in latest.log determine the next step.
The process starts, then exits during mod loading
Read the first “Caused by” section or the earliest severe error rather than the last cascade of failures. Common categories include an incomplete server pack, a mismatched mod version, a damaged library, insufficient memory, or a Java incompatibility. Confirm that the server directory contains the pack’s complete mods, config, and script files. Re-running an installer over a mixed directory can preserve stale files, so a clean server directory is preferable when the file set is uncertain.
The console stays open but no one can join
A running console proves only that a process exists. It does not prove that the process is listening on the expected interface or that packets can reach it. Work through the connectivity checks in order:
- Watch the console after startup and confirm that the Forge process remains alive rather than stopping after a delayed error.
- Confirm that the client is running the same SkyFactory 4 release and Minecraft 1.12.2 base version as the server.
- Open
server.propertiesand check theserver-port. The standard Minecraft port is25565unless you deliberately changed it. - For a server on another computer, allow Java or the selected port through the operating-system firewall. If the server is behind a router, forward the chosen port to the machine running Forge.
- Use the host’s reachable address, not an old address cached from before a restart. Players on the same home network may need the host’s private address; players outside it need the public address and port forwarding.
Timeouts and connection-refused errors have different implications. A refusal often means nothing is listening on that address and port; a timeout commonly indicates firewall, routing, or an incorrect address. A report of repeated 30-second LAN timeouts despite Java 8 on both sides points toward networking or host configuration rather than Java alone.

The world is a vanilla void, lacks starter items, or has no SkyFactory advancements
This symptom strongly suggests that the world was created by the vanilla Minecraft server jar or with the wrong generator settings. Starting minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar can produce a vanilla server even when SkyFactory mods are sitting in the folder. The result may include missing mod advancements, absent starter content, and incorrect world generation.
Stop the server and back up the entire directory before changing the world. Inspect server.properties, including the Sky Factory generator setting supplied by the pack, and verify that the startup script launches the generated Forge server rather than the vanilla jar. Only after the backup should you remove the incorrectly generated world and restart with the corrected Forge configuration. Deleting the world without a backup permanently removes any builds or player data stored in it.
Forge starts, but mods or recipes are missing
Check the startup command and the file set together. The correct installation should include the Forge jar generated for the pack, the matching mods and config directories, and the supplied scripts. A host that uploads only a vanilla jar, or uploads mods without the matching configuration, can appear to start while silently producing an incomplete game. Rebuild or upload the complete Forge/mod/config/script stack rather than adding individual mods at random.

Make sure the correct jar is being launched
In a SkyFactory server directory it is possible to see both minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar and a Forge jar. The vanilla jar is not the SkyFactory server. Open ServerStart.bat or the Unix startup script and identify the jar after the -jar argument. It should be the Forge server generated by the pack. The script may use a variable or a filename different from the examples in this article, so follow the name actually present in your directory.
When a hosting panel asks for a startup jar, select the Forge jar generated by the server pack and upload the complete set of mods, configs, and scripts. Do not select the generic Minecraft 1.12.2 server jar simply because its name is familiar. The maintainer’s guidance for a properly configured installation is that it must include the Forge jar together with all required mods, configurations, and scripts so the available SkyFactory world types can be generated.
Connectivity checklist for a server that appears healthy

When a clean reinstall is the quickest repair
Reinstalling is reasonable when the directory contains files from several pack versions, the installer was interrupted, or the Forge libraries are incomplete. Preserve the evidence before replacing anything.

- Stop the server and copy the whole directory to a backup location.
- Keep
world(or the actual world directory),server.properties,whitelist.json,ops.json, and any other files you intentionally changed. - Create a new empty server directory and unpack the official SkyFactory 4 server files there.
- Run the supplied installer, launch once to create
eula.txt, seteula=true, and launch again. - Compare the new console and logs with the old ones before copying custom settings or worlds back.
- Copy saved worlds only after the Forge server starts correctly. If the old world was generated by the vanilla jar, do not overwrite a verified SkyFactory configuration with it without checking its generator and backups.
This process preserves player data while removing ambiguity about which Java executable, Forge jar, and configuration files are active.

Choosing between local hosting and managed hosting
Local hosting gives you direct control over Java, server.properties, firewall rules, backups, and the startup script. It also means you must maintain port forwarding, keep the machine online, and diagnose every Forge error yourself.
A managed Minecraft host can be useful if it explicitly supports custom Forge 1.12.2 modpacks and lets you upload the complete SkyFactory server pack. Before moving, verify these points in writing:
- Custom Forge 1.12.2 startup is supported, not just vanilla or a newer mod-loader profile.
- You can select or upload the Forge jar generated by the pack.
- The panel permits the pack’s
mods,config, scripts, andserver.propertiesto remain intact. - You can view the live console and download
latest.loganddebug.log. - The assigned port, firewall behavior, backups, and world restore process are documented.

A concise repair order
- Confirm that the server files are SkyFactory 4.2.4 for Minecraft 1.12.2 and are separate from the client.
- Use a clean server directory and run the supplied installer.
- Launch once, set
eula=true, and launch again. - Run
java -versionfrom the same context as the startup script; use a full path to 64-bit Java 8 when several Java versions exist. - Run the script or Forge jar from Command Prompt, PowerShell, or a shell so the error remains visible.
- Read the current console,
latest.log, anddebug.logbefore changing files. - Verify that the script launches Forge, not
minecraft_server.1.12.2.jar. - If players cannot join, check process health, matching pack versions, port 25565 (or your intentional port), firewall, router, and address.
- If the world is vanilla or missing SkyFactory content, back it up, correct the generator and Forge launch, then remove the bad world only when its loss is acceptable.
Bottom line
Most SkyFactory 4 startup failures become straightforward once the hidden console error is exposed. The reliable baseline is the official 4.2.4 server pack, a completed installer and EULA, 64-bit Java 8, and the Forge-generated server jar. A server that starts but cannot be joined requires a separate network check, while a vanilla void world usually means the wrong jar or generator created the world. Preserve logs and backups before deleting anything, and change one cause at a time.
