The WordPress directory map
Your host may place the site in a document-root folder, a subdirectory or a custom location. Wherever it is, the installation normally has the same logical layout.

The exact physical path is not universal. Hosting layouts, ownership and configuration constants can move directories, so use the logical names above when following documentation and verify the actual path on your server.

How a request moves through the installation
A visitor’s request reaches the web server’s document root. Root-level entry-point files hand the request to WordPress, which reads configuration, loads the core libraries and then invokes the active theme and enabled plugins. Requests for the dashboard use code in wp-admin; shared functions and APIs come from wp-includes; site-specific behavior and assets are loaded from wp-content.
That separation explains why a clean WordPress download can replace damaged core files but cannot restore your site by itself. A fresh package does not contain your uploaded images, custom theme changes, plugin settings or database credentials. Those belong to your installation and must be preserved separately.

wp-admin contains the PHP, JavaScript, CSS and supporting files that render the WordPress back end. It is not the same thing as the administrator account or your dashboard data; it is the software that displays screens such as Posts, Media, Plugins and Settings.
What belongs here
- Dashboard screens and their supporting code.
- Assets used by the administration interface.
- Administrative request handlers that communicate with WordPress core and your database.
What not to do
Do not place themes, plugins or uploaded media in wp-admin, and do not treat it as a customization directory. Core updates can replace these files. If a dashboard file is missing or corrupted, restoring the corresponding files from a clean WordPress package is normally safer than hand-editing them.
wp-content: the part that belongs to your site
wp-content is where the installation’s site-specific material normally lives. It is the first directory to protect before an update, migration or permissions change because replacing WordPress core does not recreate its contents.
Themes
Theme directories contain templates, stylesheets, scripts and other presentation files. The active theme determines the public site’s layout, while inactive themes may still contain custom work or be needed for recovery. A child theme, a modified commercial theme or a locally developed theme is especially important to preserve because a clean download may not reproduce your changes.

Plugin directories contain code that extends WordPress. They can add features, create custom directories and store files that their own documentation defines. Deactivating a plugin in the dashboard does not make its files unimportant: the plugin may be needed to interpret existing content or to restore a setting.

Uploads and Media Library files
Files uploaded through the Media Library are stored on the server and normally belong under the content area. The precise path can vary because the UPLOADS setting and hosting layout can relocate it. There is therefore no single path that is correct for every WordPress site.
When an image appears in the Media Library but cannot be displayed, check the real uploads path, file ownership and directory permissions. A directory that is readable but not writable can allow existing images to display while preventing new uploads. Conversely, overly broad permissions can create a security risk. Correct the ownership and permissions through your host’s supported procedure rather than applying a blanket value to every file.
Directories created by plugins
Many plugins create their own folders inside wp-content for caches, logs, generated files or data exports. Their purpose and safe deletion rules differ. Before removing an unfamiliar directory, identify the plugin that created it and check whether it contains user uploads or settings. Include the entire wp-content directory in backups so these less obvious files are not lost.
wp-includes: shared WordPress core
wp-includes contains the bulk of WordPress’s shared core code, including PHP libraries, JavaScript, CSS and APIs used by both the public site and the dashboard. Themes and plugins call these APIs instead of implementing every WordPress service themselves.
It is a core directory, not a place for custom code. Editing it directly makes future updates difficult and can introduce failures that are hard to diagnose. If files are suspected to be corrupted, compare them with the same WordPress release or replace the directory from a clean package after taking a backup. Preserve your own code in a theme, child theme or plugin under wp-content.
wp-config.php: the installation’s critical configuration
WordPress documentation describes wp-config.php as one of the most important files in an installation. It is normally in the installation root and contains the information WordPress needs to connect to its database, along with other base settings.
Why the file matters
- A wrong database host, name, user or password can prevent WordPress from starting.
- Configuration can define custom locations for the content, plugin and upload directories.
- Security-related and environment-specific constants may affect how the site operates.
Because those settings can change directory locations, two otherwise similar installations may not have identical paths. When troubleshooting a missing upload or plugin, inspect the configuration and the host’s document root instead of assuming a standard location.

Safe handling
- Download a backup copy before editing.
- Use a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting or a byte-order mark.
- Change one setting at a time and preserve the existing syntax, quotes and semicolons.
- Save the file with the same name and permissions, then test both the public site and the dashboard.
- If the site fails immediately, restore the prior copy through the same access method or ask the host to restore it.
Never publish the contents of wp-config.php in a support forum or commit it to a public repository. It can contain database credentials and other values that should remain private.
.htaccess: Apache rewrite and access rules
.htaccess is an Apache per-directory configuration file. WordPress uses rewrite rules in it to turn internal requests into readable “pretty” permalinks. The file is hidden by convention because its name begins with a dot, so a hosting file manager or FTP client may not display it until you enable an option such as “show hidden files.”
Regenerating permalink rules
If the dashboard works but post or page URLs return a 404 error, open Settings → Permalinks and save the existing structure. WordPress can display the rewrite rules that need to be placed in .htaccess when the file is not writable or when the server requires manual copying. Copy only the rules WordPress provides for that installation, then test several pages and the home page.
Editing precautions
- Download the current file before making a change.
- Make sure the server actually uses Apache; another web server may not read
.htaccess. - Add a small, documented change rather than replacing unrelated rules.
- After saving, test canonical URLs, redirects, media files and the dashboard.
A syntax error can make the entire site return a server error. If that happens, restore the previous file or rename the edited copy through your host’s file access, then contact hosting support if the server still refuses requests.
Where the files are stored and how to reach them
The files are stored on the server that hosts the WordPress installation, not inside the WordPress database. Your host determines the document-root path and which connection methods are available.
Hosting control panel
Open the host’s file manager and locate the domain’s document root. Look for wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes and wp-config.php together. If you cannot see .htaccess, enable hidden-file display before concluding that it does not exist. File managers vary in their labels, so confirm the folder by opening wp-content and checking for the site’s themes or plugins.
SFTP or FTP
Use the server name, port, username, authentication method and starting directory supplied by your host. Navigate to the same document root and download a copy before editing. SFTP and FTP clients often hide dotfiles by default; turn on hidden-file display when you need to inspect .htaccess.

ls -laMove into the directory that contains the WordPress folders, then inspect the content directory:
cd /path/to/wordpress
ls -la
find wp-content -maxdepth 2 -type dReplace /path/to/wordpress with the path supplied by your host. Do not run recursive ownership or permission commands copied from an unrelated server; the correct values depend on the host’s web-server user and security model.
WordPress Filesystem API
Plugins and themes should use WordPress’s Filesystem API for read and write operations instead of assuming that PHP can directly modify any path. The API abstracts secure file access across different host types and can request the credentials required by the server. This matters when a host isolates PHP, uses different ownership, or does not permit direct writes. It does not replace a backup and does not make arbitrary file edits safe.
Permissions, ownership and common access failures
Being able to see a file does not mean the web server can read or write it. Access depends on the host’s filesystem, ownership, permissions and available connection method.
- Uploads fail: verify that the configured uploads directory exists and is writable by the process that handles uploads. Check the path in configuration and confirm that parent directories are accessible.
- A plugin cannot create its folder: the content directory may be read-only for the web process, or ownership may belong to a different account. Ask the host for the supported ownership correction rather than granting unrestricted write access.
- You cannot edit
wp-config.php: your account may lack permission, the file may be owned by another system user, or the host may require a control-panel editor. Download, edit locally and upload only after confirming the correct owner and mode. - The file is missing from a client: enable hidden files and verify that you are in the domain’s actual document root.
What to back up before maintenance
A usable WordPress backup has both files and the database. This guide focuses on the files, but remember that posts, pages, settings and much plugin data are stored in the database and cannot be reconstructed from folders alone.

wp-config.php: preserves the connection details and custom path definitions needed to start the site.- All of
wp-content: includes themes, plugins, uploads and directories created by plugins. Do not back up only the active theme. .htaccess: preserves rewrite and access rules that may not be recreated automatically.- The remaining WordPress files: retain a complete snapshot for a direct rollback, even though core files can generally be replaced from a fresh download.
Keep at least one copy outside the server. Label backups with the site, date and whether the database is included, and verify that an archive can actually be opened before relying on it.
A safe file-maintenance workflow
- Identify the real root. Confirm that the directory contains the three core folders and the configuration file; do not edit a similarly named staging or backup directory.
- Record the current state. Note the active theme, enabled plugins, configured upload location and any custom server rules.
- Create a rollback point. Download
wp-config.php,.htaccess, all ofwp-contentand the remaining files, and make a matching database backup. - Change one thing. Edit only the file or directory needed for the task, preserving a copy of the original.
- Test in the right order. Check the home page, a representative post or page, a media URL, login, the dashboard and the function you changed.
- Restore quickly if needed. Put back the original file or directory, then retest. If the database connection is affected, restore
wp-config.phpbefore investigating application-level symptoms.

Fast troubleshooting checklist
The site reports a database connection error
Open the backed-up and live wp-config.php copies and compare the database settings carefully. Confirm that you edited the configuration file in the active document root, not a staging copy. Restore the last known-good version if the error appeared immediately after an edit.

Go to Settings → Permalinks and save the structure. If WordPress presents rewrite rules to copy, update the correct .htaccess in the document root, making hidden files visible in your client first. Check that Apache is handling the site and that another rule has not overridden WordPress’s rules.
New media uploads fail while old images work
Check the uploads location configured for this installation, confirm that the directory exists and inspect ownership and write permissions. A customized UPLOADS setting can make a commonly assumed path wrong. Correct the server-side access problem, then retry with a small file.
The dashboard is broken after a core change
Compare wp-admin and wp-includes with files from the same WordPress release. Restore those core directories from the clean package or your rollback copy, while leaving wp-content and wp-config.php intact.
A plugin’s generated files vanished
Restore the relevant directory from the wp-content backup and identify which plugin owns it. Do not assume that reinstalling the plugin recreates uploaded or generated data; many plugins keep that material outside the plugin’s own code directory.
The practical priority order
For routine maintenance, start with the files that are hardest to recreate: the complete wp-content directory, wp-config.php and .htaccess. Keep a full filesystem snapshot as well, because core files can be replaced but a complete copy makes recovery faster. When a task involves permissions or server rules, use the host’s supported access method and test immediately after each change. That approach keeps WordPress’s replaceable core separate from the configuration and site-owned files that make your installation unique.
