WordPress Migration Failed: Not Enough Space on the New Server

A failed WordPress migration usually needs more than the final site size. Learn how to identify quota, database, and temporary-space limits, clean the destination safely, switch to a manual files-and-SQL transfer, and verify the restored site before DNS changes.

A WordPress migration fails with “not enough space” when the destination cannot provide enough usable working room for the archive, extracted files, database import, and temporary files. Keep the old site online, preserve a complete off-server backup, identify whether the limit is a hosting quota, database volume, or temporary directory, then either free disposable files, add capacity, or switch to a staged file-and-database transfer.

What the “not enough space” error actually means

The visible website size is only one part of a migration. A typical move may need room for the compressed backup or archive, the extracted WordPress directory, the database export and its imported tables, and temporary working files created by a migration plugin or hosting control panel. A destination that can hold the finished site may still fail while two or more copies exist during extraction or import.

WordPress uses the disk_full condition when “There is not enough free disk space to complete the update.” In a migration, the same practical issue can appear even when the web root looks small enough: the account quota, database storage, or temporary directory may be full. WordPress’s common-errors guidance specifically notes that operations can fail when /tmp contains too many files despite free space elsewhere.

Do not interpret this message as proof that the database alone is too large. WordPress’s migration guidance treats a site as two required backup components: the complete file tree and the database. The database export does not contain themes, plugins, uploads, or wp-config.php.

How much working space should the new server have?

There is no WordPress-published universal multiplier such as “twice the backup.” Calculate the requirement from the actual site and the way you plan to move it.

Measure the components

  • Compressed archive: record the size of the migration package or backup archive that will be uploaded or generated on the destination.
  • Extracted files: measure the WordPress directory after extraction, including wp-content/uploads, plugins, themes, media, and other site files.
  • Database export and import: account for the SQL export and the storage needed by the destination database while tables are created and populated.
  • Temporary workspace: include the control panel, plugin, or server temporary directory used during upload, decompression, checksum work, and import.
  • Operational headroom: leave room for logs, cache regeneration, updates, and normal operation after the migration. The amount is site-specific rather than a fixed WordPress rule.

Check each storage domain separately. A web account can have free file space while its database allocation is exhausted, or a database can fit while the account’s temporary directory is full. Ask the host for the quota used by the web account, the database volume, and the temporary path used by the migration process.

Safe recovery runbook

1. Keep the old site available

Do not delete the source site, cancel its hosting, or overwrite its files while the destination is unverified. It is your working fallback if the transfer or testing fails.

2. Make a complete backup away from the full destination

Store both parts of the site somewhere independent of the constrained server: a copy of the WordPress file tree and a database export. Confirm that the files include uploads, plugins, themes, and wp-config.php. Confirm that the SQL export can be opened or inspected and that the file backup is readable. A database export by itself is not a restorable WordPress site.

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

3. Find the actual bottleneck

Use the hosting control panel’s disk-usage and quota views, database management screen, and temporary-file settings. If you have administrative access, ask the host or server administrator which filesystem contains the temporary directory and whether it has a separate limit. Record the current usage before deleting anything so you can tell whether cleanup changed the relevant limit.

4. Remove only disposable destination data

After the independent backup is confirmed, remove stale migration archives from failed attempts, abandoned extraction directories, and caches that can be rebuilt. Delete only items you can identify with confidence. Do not remove the only copy of the uploads directory, the only SQL export, the live source site, or a directory whose ownership and purpose you cannot establish.

5. Add capacity when the data itself is too large

If the measured archive, extracted files, database import, and temporary workspace cannot fit together, increase the destination storage or move to a hosting allocation with more capacity. Cleanup cannot solve a structural shortage when the site’s required data already exceeds the available quota.

6. Retry with a lower-space workflow

Instead of generating a second complete archive on the destination, transfer the file tree and SQL export separately. You can also create or hold the archive on another machine or server, then stream or stage the pieces so the destination does not retain both a large package and a full extracted copy at the same time. This approach gives you more visibility over which component is consuming space.

7. Configure and import the destination

  1. Place the WordPress files in the destination document root or the intended subdirectory.
  2. Edit wp-config.php with the destination database name, user, password, host, and table prefix where those values differ.
  3. Create or select an empty destination database and import the SQL export through the host’s database tool or an equivalent import method.
  4. Check file ownership and permissions, then confirm that the web server can read WordPress core files and write to the directories that require it.

Import into an empty database unless you have a documented reason to merge data. Mixing a partial failed import with a new import can leave duplicate or inconsistent tables.

8. Handle a domain change safely

If the site address changes, update the WordPress home and siteurl values for the destination. Then perform a serialization-safe search and replace for the old address. A plain text replacement across the entire database can corrupt serialized values because their stored lengths no longer match; use a method that understands WordPress serialization.

9. Test before DNS cutover

Check the restored site on a staging address or hosts-file override before changing DNS. Verify the front end, administrator login, database connection, media files, active plugins, themes, permalinks, forms, scheduled jobs, and SSL. Only after those checks pass should you change DNS or shut down the old server.

What can be safely deleted on the new server?

Deletion is safe only when the item is disposable and an independent backup exists. The usual candidates after a failed migration are:

  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
  • Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption
  • 3-year limited warranty
  • Old migration archives left by earlier attempts.
  • Temporary extraction folders created by an interrupted restore.
  • Rebuildable cache files generated by WordPress, a plugin, or the hosting platform.
  • Duplicate copies of the same package that you have verified elsewhere.

Before deleting, compare names, timestamps, ownership, and sizes with the migration attempt you are troubleshooting. If a cache directory contains unique uploads or generated assets that are not present in your backup, stop and verify its contents first. Never treat an unfamiliar directory as disposable merely because its name includes “tmp,” “backup,” or “cache.”

Manual migration when a plugin runs out of space

Manual migration is a practical fallback when an automated package needs more temporary room than the destination provides. It also makes the data path explicit: files move as files, and the database moves as SQL.

File transfer

Copy the WordPress directory from the source or from your independent backup to the destination. Include the complete wp-content tree, especially uploads, plugins, and themes, as well as core files and wp-config.php. Transfer in stages if the host imposes upload-size or timeout limits, and confirm that the final directory structure matches the source.

Database transfer

Export the source database to SQL, place it outside the constrained destination until you are ready to import, and load it into an empty destination database. A successful file copy without a matching database produces an incomplete site; the SQL contains posts, settings, users, and other records that are not stored in the file tree.

Configuration and permissions

Update the destination database credentials in wp-config.php. Check the table prefix if the source used a non-default value. Set ownership and permissions appropriate for the destination web server, then load the site and inspect the error logs if the front end or administration area cannot connect.

Choosing the right remedy

Situation Preferred data path Why it fits Main requirement
Disposable archives and temporary folders consume the quota Clean the destination, then retry Restores working room without changing the site data Verified independent backup and confident identification of disposable files
The final site plus import workspace exceeds the destination allocation Increase storage or choose a larger allocation Addresses a capacity shortage that cleanup cannot remove Measured file, database, temporary-space, and headroom requirements
An automated archive needs more temporary room than is available Transfer files and SQL separately Avoids retaining a second full package during extraction Access to file transfer and database import tools
The destination cannot safely stage the package Hold the archive on another machine or server Keeps large intermediate data off the constrained account Reliable off-server storage and a verified transfer path
You lack visibility into quotas or temporary storage Ask the host to identify limits before retrying Prevents repeated failures caused by an unseen database or /tmp limit Host support or administrative access

Failure branches to check before another attempt

The control panel reports free space, but the migration still stops

Check the temporary directory and database allocation rather than only the document root. A separate temporary filesystem or a database quota can block extraction or import while the account summary appears healthy.

Cleanup freed space, but the retry fails at the same stage

Measure again and identify which component is growing at that stage. Extraction failures point to archive and temporary workspace requirements; import failures point to database storage or the SQL package. If the measured requirement is larger than the allocation, switch to staged transfer or increase capacity instead of repeating the same archive workflow.

The restored site loads, but images or plugins are missing

Recheck that the file backup included the full uploads, plugins, and themes directories. The database cannot recreate those files. Restore the missing file component before changing DNS.

The site redirects to the old domain or breaks after a URL replacement

Verify the destination home and siteurl values, then repeat the replacement with a serialization-aware tool. Do not run a blind text substitution over the database, because serialized data can be damaged.

Pre-cutover checklist

  • The old site remains online and recoverable.
  • An independent backup contains both files and database.
  • Destination account, database, and temporary-directory limits have been measured.
  • Only verified disposable archives, caches, and temporary extraction folders were removed.
  • The destination has enough measured working space or uses a staged transfer.
  • wp-config.php points to the destination database.
  • The SQL import completed into the intended empty database.
  • File ownership and permissions allow WordPress to run.
  • Front end, admin, media, plugins, themes, permalinks, forms, scheduled jobs, and SSL have been tested.
  • DNS changes are postponed until the restored site passes those checks.

The Bottom Line

Preserve the old site and a complete off-server backup first. Then measure the account quota, database storage, and temporary directory separately. Clean only disposable data; if the measured working set still cannot fit, add destination capacity or use a staged manual transfer of the files and SQL database before testing and switching DNS.
