workfoldersshell.dll is a Microsoft Windows component, not a game DLL or a Visual C++ runtime. Its description is “Microsoft (C) Work Folders Shell Extension,” and it supports Windows shell integration for Work Folders.

Do not replace it with a copy from a random DLL download page. The file should normally be serviced by Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or official Windows installation media.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to choose the shortest safe path:

  • The error appeared after an update, restart, cleanup, or system crash: install pending Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
  • Windows Security shows the file in quarantine: verify its location and Microsoft signature before restoring it.
  • The error began after a driver or hardware change: repair Windows first, then check the relevant driver.
  • The message says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing even if workfoldersshell.dll exists.
  • The problem affects corporate Work Folders: contact workplace IT because policies and server settings may be managed by your organization.
  • DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: use Windows 11’s repair reinstall, System Restore, or an in-place repair from official installation media.
  • You were about to download the DLL manually: stop. Windows servicing is the correct source.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A pending or interrupted cumulative update can leave protected Windows components incomplete.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install everything offered.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Try the operation that produced the error again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates and restart.

If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not assume that installing Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game will restore this Windows component.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to replace missing or damaged protected files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes when User Account Control asks for permission.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to complete. The scan can take some time and may appear to pause.

  1. When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the application, Explorer action, or Work Folders operation again.

How to interpret the result

  • “The restore operation completed successfully” means DISM repaired or verified the component store. Continue with SFC.
  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no damaged protected files.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair worked. Restart and test again.
  • SFC found corrupt files but could not repair some of them: restart, run DISM again, and run SFC a second time.
  • DISM reports that source files could not be found: use a matching Windows installation source or proceed to the repair reinstall options below.

Repeating commands without knowing what changed can make manual troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional. Windows Update and Microsoft repair tools remain the correct first path.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Windows Defender or another antivirus product may remove a file after a detection, including a detection that requires further verification. Do not automatically label the detection malicious or restore the file repeatedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Windows Security

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an event involving WorkFoldersShell.dll.
  6. Open the event and review the detected path, threat name, and action.
  7. If the file is in quarantine, first confirm that it was located under the Windows directory, normally:
C:WindowsSystem32WorkFoldersShell.dll

On a 64-bit installation, 32-bit system components may also exist under C:WindowsSysWOW64. Do not choose an architecture manually from an unrelated download.

Check the signature

If the file exists in System32, open PowerShell as administrator and run:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32WorkFoldersShell.dll"

A genuine Windows file should have a valid Microsoft signature. You can also calculate its hash for investigation:

Get-FileHash "$env:windirSystem32WorkFoldersShell.dll" -Algorithm SHA256

If the signature is invalid, the path is unusual, or the file returns to quarantine, do not keep restoring it. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Defender quarantined a valid file, Protection History may offer Restore, followed by an Allow on device decision. Only approve it after verifying the path, signature, and system integrity.

Fix 4: Understand “specified module could not be found”

This message does not always mean that workfoldersshell.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.

First, check the expected location:

  1. Press Win+E to open File Explorer.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Search for WorkFoldersShell.dll.
  4. Right-click it, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.

If the file exists and is correctly signed, do not download another copy. Run DISM and SFC, then investigate the event that launches the component.

A 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch can also produce a message such as “not designed to run on Windows.” Windows servicing is safer than copying a file between System32 and SysWOW64.

There is no general reason to install Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, a graphics driver, or a game for this error. Install a runtime only when a diagnostic tool or the affected application specifically identifies that runtime as missing.

Fix 5: Repair Windows 11 through Windows Update

If the component store remains damaged on Windows 11, use the built-in repair reinstall.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
  7. Restart when Windows finishes.
  8. Test workfoldersshell.dll again.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. If the option is unavailable, use System Restore or official Windows installation media instead.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known system change

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began immediately after a cleanup utility, update, driver installation, or other system change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally leaves personal files alone, but it can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. Back up important work before using it.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the timing points to one

A driver is not the normal owner of workfoldersshell.dll, and Device Manager will not replace a missing Windows DLL. Check drivers only if the error started after a hardware change, failed update, or system-device problem.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the recent change.
  4. Right-click the device and select Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Use Roll Back Driver if the option is available and the problem began after an update.
  7. Otherwise select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows.

Avoid driver download pages that do not belong to the hardware manufacturer. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the driver installation feature requires the full version, and it is not required for the normal Windows component repair path.

Does regsvr32 fix workfoldersshell.dll?

Usually, no. regsvr32 cannot restore a missing file or repair a damaged Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WorkFoldersShell.dll is a shell and COM-style DLL, so registration is technically more relevant than it is for an ordinary runtime library. However, Microsoft does not provide a general instruction telling users to register this file, and registration can fail because of architecture or dependency problems.

Use regsvr32 only when an administrator has confirmed a registration problem and the file is present in the correct Windows directory. Do not use it as the first response to a missing-DLL message.

Do not copy the DLL manually

Downloading an isolated workfoldersshell.dll file is risky because it may contain malware, be damaged, come from the wrong Windows build, or use the wrong architecture. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the component store and may leave the underlying problem unresolved.

Safe sources are:

  • Windows Update
  • DISM and SFC
  • Windows 11’s repair reinstall
  • Matching official Windows installation media
  • A controlled repair performed by an administrator or workplace IT

Do not copy the file beside a game or application. There is no evidence that a particular game normally bundles this Windows component.

If the repair still fails

Back up important files, then use official recovery options in this order:

  1. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
  2. Check whether files are repeatedly disappearing or the disk reports errors.
  3. Use an in-place repair installation from matching Windows installation media.
  4. Contact workplace IT if Work Folders is organization-managed.
  5. Use reset or clean recovery only after confirming that less destructive repairs failed.

If the issue is specifically a Work Folders synchronization error such as 0x8007017C, that is a separate Work Folders update problem, not automatically a missing-DLL problem.

FAQ

Is workfoldersshell.dll part of Windows?

Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the Work Folders shell extension.

Where should workfoldersshell.dll be?

The normal 64-bit Windows system location is C:WindowsSystem32. Do not use the %USERPROFILE%Work Folders data directory as a substitute; that folder stores user files, not the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe?

A correctly signed Microsoft copy in the normal Windows directory is expected. Verify the signature and path if antivirus reports it or the file appears elsewhere.

Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?

Not by default. Those packages are not the established source of this Windows component. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first.

Does Windows 10 need different commands from Windows 11?

No. The DISM and SFC commands are the same. The Windows 11 repair reinstall option may not appear in Windows 10, so Windows 10 users may need System Restore or installation media instead.

When should I contact IT?

Contact IT if Work Folders is connected to your employer, the device is managed, or the error appears while setting up or accessing corporate files. Your organization may control the Work Folders policy and server configuration.
