World of Warcraft has three separate systems that affect what you see: character customization at creation or the Barber Shop, graphics settings that control rendering, and transmog outfits that control the appearance of equipped gear. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
You can redesign eligible facial and body features at the Barber Shop, choose race-dependent options when creating a character, and use slot-based transmog so a replacement item keeps the appearance assigned to that gear slot. Saved outfits can be switched for free, while changing the appearance assigned to a slot costs gold.

Where character appearance is changed
Character creation
The first customization interface appears during character creation, after you choose a race and class. The available cosmetic controls depend on the race you selected. Blizzard’s Shadowlands preview described broad categories such as skin tones, hairstyles, and eye colors, with some races also offering tattoos, jewelry, beards, scars, or hair ornaments.
That 2020 preview is a historical overview rather than a guaranteed inventory for every race today. Options can be added, revised, or restricted by race in later updates, so the controls actually displayed for your selected character are the authoritative list.

The Barber Shop
The Barber Shop is the other official interface Blizzard identifies for character customization. Its system uses the same underlying customization interface as character creation, allowing you to revisit eligible appearance choices after the character already exists.
To make a change, enter a Barber Shop, interact with the customization interface, select the feature you want to alter, preview the available choices for your race, and confirm the change through the current interface. The exact options shown are race-dependent. If a feature is absent from the screen, that race does not currently expose it through that interface.
What the model system actually stores
Blizzard rebuilt the customization system for Shadowlands. Features such as eyes, face, beard, and moustache were separated instead of being packed into a few generic slots. The system also procedurally generated player textures, and the same customization framework served both character creation and the Barber Shop.

Blizzard’s 9.1.5 coverage gave dated examples of new options for Highmountain Tauren, Lightforged Draenei, Nightborne, and Void Elves; those examples should not be read as a complete list of current additions.
How to change your character’s appearance
During creation
- Start a new character and select a race and class.
- Review each cosmetic category presented for that race, including the broad categories available on the creation screen and any race-specific details.
- Use the preview to check the result from the available viewing angles before finalizing the character.
Because the race determines which controls appear, changing race is not equivalent to changing a hairstyle or face option. A different race can expose an entirely different set of cosmetic categories.

After the character exists
- Locate and enter a Barber Shop using the current game world and interface.
- Open the customization controls and select the feature you want to edit.
- Compare the available choices in the preview. The list is limited to options supported by your character’s race.
- Confirm the appearance change using the current confirmation control.
Blizzard’s official descriptions establish the creation screen and Barber Shop as the supported contexts. They do not establish one universal current price, a single menu path for every client version, or an identical option list for every race, so rely on the labels shown in your installed game.
Character customization is not the same as graphics settings
Customization changes the character data
Choosing a skin tone, hairstyle, eye treatment, beard, tattoo, scar, or similar feature changes the appearance data attached to the character. The choices are constrained by race and are made in character creation or at the Barber Shop.

Graphics settings change rendering
Graphics settings determine how the game draws the world and characters on your display. They are separate from the cosmetic data saved to a character. Adjusting rendering quality does not unlock a hairstyle, add a tattoo, alter your race, or rewrite a transmog outfit.
The official material available for this topic does not provide a current authoritative list of graphics-menu labels, setting behavior, or recommended values for particular hardware. Menu names and performance effects can change with client updates. For an accurate adjustment, open the current in-game Graphics menu, read the descriptions shown there, and use a current Blizzard guide for your game version rather than relying on an old settings list.
A practical way to diagnose what you are seeing
- If the character has the wrong facial feature or hair, check the character-customization or Barber Shop interface.
- If the character looks correct in the customization preview but appears less detailed or renders differently during play, inspect the current graphics settings and display conditions.
- If equipped armor has the wrong visual style, inspect transmog rather than character customization.
Keeping these systems separate prevents a common mistake: changing a render-quality control while expecting it to change the underlying model choice.

How the current transmog system works
Looks are assigned to gear slots
Blizzard’s September 2, 2025 transmog announcement describes a slot-based system. You apply an appearance to a gear slot, not permanently to one physical item. When you replace the item in that slot, the configured appearance remains assigned to the slot.

The item’s statistics and the slot’s displayed appearance are handled separately.
Setting a slot appearance costs gold
The 2025 announcement says that updating a slot so it displays a specific look costs gold. Treat this as the cost of changing the slot’s configured appearance, not as a charge every time you equip another item that occupies the same slot.
Because the amount can depend on the current game implementation and the particular change, check the value displayed in your transmog interface before confirming. Do not confuse this charge with switching to an outfit that has already been saved.
Outfits, saved sets, and automatic switching
Starting outfit capacity and account-wide slots
The Midnight pre-expansion content notes say every player starts with two free outfits. Additional outfit slots can be purchased with gold, and those additional slots are account-wide for the warband. Blizzard’s 2025 announcement describes dozens of unlockable outfits, using a qualitative description rather than promising a fixed exact count.

Switching among saved outfits is free
The pre-expansion notes distinguish saving or switching among existing outfits from changing a slot’s underlying appearance. Once an outfit is saved, activating it does not require a visit to a transmog vendor and does not incur the slot-update gold charge described above.
This distinction matters when planning several looks. You pay when you configure a slot’s appearance, then you can move between saved combinations without paying each time you change from one saved look to another.
Put an outfit on the action bar
Saved outfits can be placed on the action bar. This is useful when you want a deliberate manual change, such as switching from a combat set to a role-playing appearance. The action-bar entry activates the saved outfit rather than rebuilding every slot individually.
Let Situations change outfits automatically
Situations can trigger an outfit change based on activity. Blizzard’s examples include entering a dungeon and changing specialization. Configure a saved outfit first, then use the current Situations interface to associate it with the condition you want. The exact controls and available triggers are version-dependent, so use the labels displayed by your client.

You equipped a new item
Under the slot-based system, replacing an item should not erase the slot’s chosen appearance. If the new item appears in its original style, check whether the slot was actually included in the active outfit and whether another saved outfit was activated afterward.

A different outfit became active
Manual action-bar activation and Situation triggers can change the active outfit. Entering an activity or changing specialization may therefore produce a different appearance without any item being lost. Check which saved outfit is active before reapplying a slot manually.
The slot was updated rather than merely switched
Choosing a different appearance for a slot is a paid update, while switching between already saved outfits is free. If you confirmed a new slot appearance, the previous look may no longer be the one assigned to that outfit. Re-select the intended appearance and save the corrected outfit.
An older set was converted
The Midnight pre-expansion notes say prior transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets. If an older saved set is not where you remember it, look for the corresponding Custom Set rather than assuming that the appearances were deleted.
Choosing the right workflow
Use the Barber Shop for the character model
Choose this route when the problem concerns hair, eyes, face, beard, skin tone, tattoos, jewelry, scars, or another race-dependent feature. Graphics settings cannot substitute for these edits.
Use transmog for equipment style
Choose transmog when the issue concerns armor, weapons, or the visual identity of a gear slot. Assign the desired appearance, save a complete outfit when you want a reusable combination, and remember that the slot appearance persists when its item is replaced.
Use graphics controls for display and performance goals
Choose the current Graphics menu when your goal is how the game renders on your monitor or how it runs on your hardware. Since authoritative current recommendations and labels are not established here, evaluate the descriptions and results in your own client instead of applying a universal preset.
