Blizzard set the Phase 2 profession cap at 225, but later guides describe Artisan Engineering and progression to 300. Use the live trainer and recipe tooltips for your character’s current phase, and treat seasonal recipes as potential discovery or quest unlocks—not automatic rewards for raising your skill.
How Engineering works in Season of Discovery
Engineering combines trained skill ranks with recipes and materials. In Season of Discovery, some additions are tied to discoveries, new materials, or profession quest chains, so leveling the skill alone may not give you access to every seasonal item. Blizzard said Phase 2 added approximately twenty recipes across non-gathering professions; that total is for multiple professions, not Engineering alone. Blizzard also described new tradeable materials and profession quests that grant access to crafted items. Blizzard’s Phase 2 announcement explains those changes.
The mode expands in level-banded phases, with new content and profession updates arriving over time. Blizzard’s launch announcement describes that phase-based design. Its later Phase 4 announcement raised the playable level range to 50–60 and mentioned new profession and reputation recipes for named factions; it does not establish that every listed recipe is for Engineering.
Engineering skill caps and trainer requirements by phase
| Phase context | What is established | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 2 | Blizzard said professions capped at 225, with specializations opening later in Phase 3. | This is a historical Phase 2 rule, not a universal current cap. |
| Phase 3 and later | Secondary guides describe Artisan Engineering and progression toward 300. Warcraft Tavern names Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan as the Artisan trainer. | Confirm your character-level and skill prerequisites with the live trainer; the cited guide material may reflect an earlier phase state. |
Blizzard’s exact Phase 2 wording was: “Professions cap at 225 in Phase 2 with profession specializations opening later in Season of Discovery Phase 3.” Check the announcement for that historical limit. For later progression, Warcraft Tavern’s Engineering guide describes Artisan Engineering from Phase 3 onward and identifies Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan. Since requirements can depend on phase and character progression, use the trainer’s current dialogue as the final check.

How to level Engineering
Use a phase-appropriate route rather than copying a 1–300 list without checking whether its recipes and skill ceiling apply to your character. The secondary guides provide skill bands and recipe routes, but material totals are estimates: crafting skill gains can vary, and the guides do not establish current realm prices or auction-house stock.
- Check your current skill ceiling. Ask an Engineering trainer which rank is available to you, and confirm your character meets the stated requirements.
- Train the next rank when eligible. Do not assume that reaching a familiar skill threshold unlocks the same rank in every phase.
- Follow a route for your current range. Use the relevant band and recipe list in the Wowhead Season of Discovery Engineering guide or Warcraft Tavern’s guide, then verify each recipe in-game before gathering materials.
- Recheck recipes and reagent counts as you craft. Recipe availability and requirements can change; the live recipe window is a safer basis for a shopping list than an undated total.
Blizzard’s May 6, 2024 hotfix notes document historical adjustments to crafting requirements and profession material quantities. They do not prove a specific current Engineering change, but they show why exact reagent counts should be checked in the client. Read the dated hotfix notes. Blizzard’s content update notes index is the place to check for later update information; the index alone does not establish a particular Engineering adjustment.

How to unlock seasonal Engineering recipes
Some seasonal recipes may require more than a profession trainer. Blizzard says new materials can be found and traded, and profession quest chains can open access to new crafted items. That makes recipe access a separate progression track: you may need the right skill, a recipe, its reagents, and any relevant discovery or quest completion.
Gnomeregan salvage questline
The Wowhead guide describes a Gnomeregan-related route that begins by using Grime-Encrusted Salvage at the Salvagematic 9000 in the raid’s rest area. Treat this as a guide lead, not a guarantee that every character can start it immediately: confirm the salvage item, quest prerequisites, and current NPC or object behavior in-game. The guide also covers phase-specific recipes and reagents. See its SoD Engineering quest and recipe details.

Season of Discovery guides describe Gnomish and Goblin Engineering specializations, but the evidence does not establish that one is best for every class or use. Choose based on the specific item you want to craft and whether you need to craft it yourself. If you only want to use an item, first check whether another player can make or sell it to you.

- Start with the item. Identify the recipe or device you want, then check whether it is locked to a specialization.
- Check seasonal cross-specialization access. Wowhead notes a Season of Discovery quest route for learning recipes associated with the opposite specialization. Verify the live route, its requirements, and any costs before choosing a specialization on that basis.
- Compare unlock effort with your goal. Confirm the required character level, Engineering skill, quest steps, and materials in-game. These details can vary with phase and recipe state.
- Account for realm conditions. Prices and availability vary by realm, faction, and time; no current market prices are established here.
