Choose creatures whose level fits your current skill; published guides offer useful thresholds, but these are heuristics rather than an official Blizzard rule. A SoD-specific guide reports that professions could reach 300 from Phase 3 onward and that Phase 8 retained the cap; the sources here do not establish which phase is currently live.
Make sure you are using the right WoW client
This guide is for the standalone WoW Classic client on Season of Discovery realms. It is not a guide to Retail WoW’s separate “Classic” profession skill track. The Classic 1–300 guide explicitly includes Season of Discovery among the versions it covers. WoW-Professions’ Classic Skinning guide
How to start Skinning
- Learn Skinning from a trainer. You can ask a city guard for directions to a profession trainer.
- Keep a Skinning Knife in your bag. This is the setup recommended by the Classic leveling guides; treat it as guide advice, not a current official Blizzard instruction.
- Kill and loot eligible beasts. Skinning is performed on eligible creature corpses after the creature is dead and looted.
- Skin the corpse and repeat. If a corpse cannot be skinned, check that it is an eligible creature and that your skill is high enough for its level.
The basic loop—learn the profession, carry the knife, kill and loot beasts, then skin them—is described in WoW-Professions’ Classic guide and Warcraft Tavern’s 1–300 guide.
Choose creatures that match your skill
Creature level matters: targeting beasts that are too high-level for your Skinning skill can prevent you from skinning them. The following are guide heuristics to help choose a suitable level, not a Blizzard-published formula.

#1 Best Overall
- Great product!
| Skinning skill | Suggested maximum creature level | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Below 100 | Skill ÷ 10 + 10 | Heuristic from WoW-Professions’ Classic guide. |
| 100 or higher | Skill ÷ 5 | Heuristic from WoW-Professions’ Classic guide. |
| General shorthand | About 5 Skinning skill per creature level | Simplified rule from Warcraft Tavern. |
Use these numbers to narrow your choices, then let the game’s actual skill requirement decide whether a corpse is skinnable. The two guides phrase the relationship differently, so do not treat either heuristic as a guaranteed threshold for every creature.
Where to find a Skinning trainer
Blizzard’s city guides give examples of trainer locations, not a complete or phase-specific SoD directory. Ask a city guard for directions when you are in town.
- Orgrimmar: Thuwd, according to Blizzard’s Orgrimmar city guide.
- Stormwind: Maris Granger, according to Blizzard’s Stormwind city guide.
- Darnassus: Eladriel, according to Blizzard’s Darnassus city guide.
- Undercity: Killian Hagey is listed in the Rogues’ Quarter in Blizzard’s Undercity city guide.
These are historical WoW Classic city references. Check the NPC’s available ranks in your game if you need to confirm what is trainable in your current phase.
What is the Season of Discovery profession cap?
A SoD-specific guide reports that profession caps rose to 300 beginning in Phase 3 and that Phase 8 retained the 300 cap. The guide’s surfaced page does not display a publication date, and these sources do not establish the phase currently live, so check in-game before relying on a phase-specific cap.
Rank #3
Blizzard’s 2024 Phase 2 announcement is historical context: it said professions were capped at 225 in Phase 2, with specializations opening in Phase 3. That earlier cap should not be used as current leveling advice. Blizzard’s Phase 2 announcement and Warcraft Tavern’s SoD profession guide

Skinning beasts you already encounter during ordinary leveling can build skill without requiring a separate farming trip. A dedicated farm may make sense if you need particular leather or scales, but there is no verified current fastest route in these sources. Before committing to a zone, consider:
- Whether the beasts’ levels fit your current Skinning skill.
- How much travel the route requires and how consistently suitable creatures appear.
- How much competition other players create on your realm.
- Whether you need a specific material rather than simply more skill.
Skinning materials can support Leatherworking or be traded in-game, but their prices and availability depend on realm conditions. No current material-price evidence is established here.
