WoW: Forever Keeps Classic’s Slower Combat Pace, but MMO Demand Is Unproven

WoW: Forever keeps Classic WoW’s slower, more tactical combat. Some players welcome the pace, but the available evidence does not measure broader MMO demand.

World of Warcraft: Forever is described as retaining Classic WoW’s slower, more deliberate combat, in contrast with modern WoW’s faster pace. That makes it an alternative for players who enjoy a more tactical rhythm—not proof of a broad, measured longing for slower MMOs. The exact quotation in the supplied headline is not verified by the available interview excerpt.

What the developer is reported to have said

In a Men’s Journal interview syndicated by Yahoo Tech, World of Warcraft director Ion Hazzikostas is quoted discussing Forever’s core battle mechanics: “We don’t have any major changes, I would say. Forever is retaining the slower-paced, more deliberate combat of the Classic version of the game. It’s a bit more tactical.”

He contrasts that combat with modern WoW’s much faster pace and describes the difference as a strength: the games appeal to different kinds of fans. The point is about combat pacing and distinct preferences, not a claim that every part of Forever is slower or that most MMO players want a slower game.

Is there a real longing for slower MMOs?

There is evidence of individual players valuing the slower experience, but not enough here to establish how widespread that preference is. In a September 18, 2026 discussion on the Blizzard WoW forums, participants described slower play as leaving more room for quest text, travel, exploration, and social interaction. Those comments illustrate why some players welcome a deliberate pace; they are personal impressions, not a representative survey.

A MMO-Champion recap of the BlizzCon 2026 Forever panel also characterizes the design as preserving deliberate, tactical combat. It is a secondary account, so it provides context rather than replacing an official transcript.

What slower combat changes for players

More room to make tactical choices

A slower combat rhythm can make each action feel more consequential and give players more time to consider what to do next. That is consistent with Hazzikostas’s description of Classic-style combat as more tactical. It does not mean every encounter is necessarily difficult, or that slower combat is automatically better.

What the evidence does not establish

  • The exact headline wording about “a real longing” and a “go go go nature” is not confirmed by the interview excerpt. It should not be treated as a verified direct quotation from Hazzikostas.
  • No named statistic in the available sources measures demand for slower MMO pacing.
  • The comparison supports a claim about combat pace; it does not establish that all of Forever’s systems or activities are slower than modern WoW.

The careful conclusion is narrower than the headline: Forever preserves a slower, more deliberate Classic-style combat feel, and some players say they appreciate the room that pace gives them. The available evidence does not show how many players share that preference.
