Whether you can play a particular class as a particular race depends on which version or mode of World of Warcraft you’re playing, and sometimes on your faction or an unlock. Start by checking the rules for your exact game context; the nine-class chart below is specifically for World of Warcraft: Forever, not a universal Retail or Classic WoW chart.
Can your race be this class in WoW?
Check the race and class combination in the rules for the game version or mode you intend to play. Blizzard’s September 22, 2026 World of Warcraft: Forever article lists nine classes and separate Alliance and Horde options. Its legend says, “An X indicates that the listed race can choose that class.” The table below restates that chart; it does not establish eligibility in other WoW contexts. What changes with faction or race selection?
Skyborne options differ by faction in WoW: Forever
Skyborne are selected as Horde or Alliance at character creation. Horde Windshapers can choose Shaman, while Alliance High-Order Skyborne can choose Mage. Both factions list Druid, Hunter, Rogue, and Warrior as available. Blizzard’s Skyborne preview.
Other WoW contexts may use different rules
Do not apply the WoW: Forever matrix automatically to Retail, Classic, or another mode. The cited chart is specifically for WoW: Forever; it does not supply a complete matrix for those other contexts. Check the rules and creation options in the client you plan to use.

Does the race need to be unlocked?
Race eligibility and race access are separate checks: a class may be listed for a race, while the race itself still has a requirement. Blizzard’s July 2023 Dragonflight update said earlier Allied Race unlock restrictions had been removed except for a character-level threshold, and that an account with a level-40 character could unlock Allied Races. That is dated guidance, not proof of the current requirement for every client or account; confirm what your game currently asks for. Dragonflight: Fractures in Time Content Update Notes.
Midnight races and class access can have their own steps
Blizzard’s March 3, 2026 Midnight launch announcement says Haranir are unlocked by completing the Harandar zone level-up campaign. It also says Void Elf Demon Hunter access is obtained through a short quest line from the Midnight pre-expansion update. These are specific content requirements, not general rules for every Allied Race. World of Warcraft: Midnight Now Live!

How to verify a combination before committing
- Choose the intended game context. Identify the exact WoW version or mode you will play; do not treat one mode’s race/class chart as universal.
- Check the race and class intersection. Use the applicable current chart, then confirm the class is offered for that race in your chosen faction or variant.
- Check race access separately. Look for an unlock campaign, account-level condition, or other requirement that applies to that race in your current client.
- Inspect character creation. Blizzard’s October 2022 guidance said players could hover over an Allied Race icon on the character-creation screen to see unlock requirements. UI controls can change, so treat that as a useful check rather than a guarantee that every client behaves identically. Play as a Mage, Priest, or Rogue of Any Race.
- Resolve any mismatch before customizing. If a desired class is absent or the race is locked, follow the in-client information for the edition and account you are using rather than relying on an older guide.
Why older race/class guides may be wrong
Restrictions have changed over time, and changes may be scoped to a particular update or game context. In October 2022, Blizzard announced that all playable races could become Mages, Priests, or Rogues, adding eight combinations to Dragonflight and making the change available even to players without that expansion. In July 2023, Blizzard updated Allied Race unlock guidance to remove earlier restrictions apart from a character-level threshold. Those dated announcements explain why older guides may show combinations or prerequisites that no longer match a given client; they should not be stretched into a rule for every mode or current account.

That historical announcement is not a reliable statement of today’s global rules. The character-creation screen in your intended game context is the practical final check.
