wow64.dll Not Found: Repair Windows Without DLL Downloads

wow64.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, game, or ordinary third-party application file. If wow64.dll is missing or cannot load, repair Windows first rather than downloading an isolated DLL.

What wow64.dll does

WOW64 lets 32-bit x86 applications run on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft describes Wow64.dll as part of the core emulation infrastructure that translates or “thunks” system calls between a 32-bit application and the 64-bit Windows environment. Related components include Wow64Win.dll and, on x64 systems, Wow64Cpu.dll. Microsoft’s WOW64 implementation documentation explains how these parts work together.

WOW64 is supplied by Windows and does not need to be separately enabled. It is unrelated to installing a Visual C++ Redistributable package. Reinstalling Visual C++ is appropriate for errors naming files such as msvcp*.dll or vcruntime*.dll, not normally for wow64.dll.

Why it may appear in System32

The names System32 and SysWOW64 are counterintuitive on 64-bit Windows:

  • %windir%SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system binaries.
  • Windows file-system redirection can make a 32-bit process see system paths differently from a 64-bit process.

The exact layout depends on the Windows edition and processor architecture. Do not assume that wow64.dll must exist in both directories or that the copy from one directory should be moved to the other. See Microsoft’s documentation on the Windows file-system redirector.

Version and architecture checks

The version values sometimes shown on file-index pages are not a universal replacement guide. A valid copy varies with the Windows build, servicing state, edition, and architecture. Use Windows’ own repair mechanisms to restore the correct component.

Check Steps What it tells you
Windows version Press Win + R, type winver, and press Enter The Windows release currently installed
System architecture Open Settings → System → About and read System type Whether Windows is x64, ARM64, or 32-bit
Likely file locations Run the diagnostic commands below in an elevated Command Prompt Whether Windows can see the file in expected directories
Affected scope Try another known-good 32-bit application Whether the failure is system-wide or application-specific

To inspect the likely locations, open Start, type Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dir "%windir%System32wow64.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64wow64.dll"

These commands only inspect the directories. They do not prove that the file is healthy, and they do not tell you to copy a result into an application folder.

What the error message means

A loader message mentioning wow64.dll can appear in several forms:

  • “The program can’t start because wow64.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because wow64.dll was not found.”
  • “The application was unable to start correctly because wow64.dll was not found.”
  • “wow64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “Cannot find C:WindowsSystem32wow64.dll.”
  • “Failed to load wow64.dll.”

The exact wording varies by Windows version, loader condition, and the application displaying the message. The message does not prove that wow64.dll itself is defective. It may be the first failed dependency or subsystem component exposed by the application loader.

Before changing anything, note:

  • Whether one program or most 32-bit programs fail
  • The exact executable that will not start
  • Whether the problem began after Windows Update, a crash, cleanup software, antivirus quarantine, or malware removal
  • Whether Windows is x64, ARM64, or 32-bit

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart

A damaged or incomplete update can leave protected system components in an inconsistent state. Start with Windows Update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations, open Update & Security → Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
  6. Test the affected application again.

If the error began immediately after an update, note that timing. If a restore point exists, System Restore may be more appropriate than repeatedly reinstalling the application.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

For a genuinely missing or corrupted wow64.dll, this is the most important repair sequence. Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker, or SFC. DISM repairs or supplies the component source that SFC uses to check protected Windows files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. At the prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. It can take time and may appear to pause.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the program that reported the error.

A successful result may say that DISM completed successfully, followed by SFC reporting that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them, restart and test again.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a known repair source:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Do not guess the C:RepairSourceWindows path. Replace it only with a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build.

Repeating SFC without understanding what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies and perform repair actions with the full version, but Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in path for a protected Windows DLL.

Fix 3: Check antivirus protection history

Security software may quarantine a system file after malware remediation or a false detection. Do not automatically restore it.

  1. Open Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections that match the time the error began.
  5. Open the detection details and confirm the file path, detection name, and action taken.
  6. If the item is a real threat or you cannot independently establish that it is safe, leave it quarantined.
  7. Run Scan options → Full scan. If the problem followed suspected malware, consider Microsoft Defender Antivirus Offline scan when available.
  8. After the scan, repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC.

Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can put the device at risk. Prefer rebuilding the protected component through Windows repair rather than manually restoring a quarantined system DLL. Use Microsoft’s Protection History guidance when reviewing the detection.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall one affected application

If only one game or application fails and other 32-bit programs work, Windows may be healthy. The application could be damaged, using an incorrect dependency path, or incompatible with the installed Windows architecture.

For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find the affected application.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair, if available.
  6. Test the application.
  7. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local data.

For a traditional desktop application:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Select the application’s three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Uninstall, or select its Modify or Repair option if provided.
  4. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  5. Download the current installer only from the application publisher’s official site or use the original verified installer.
  6. Install the program again and test it.

For a game, open its official launcher and use its Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-integrity command. These options replace damaged application files without treating wow64.dll as a game-owned DLL.

If reinstalling the application fixes the problem while other 32-bit software was unaffected, the original failure was likely application-specific. Do not place a downloaded wow64.dll beside the game executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check architecture and compatibility

A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL, and a 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL. A program can also fail because it expects a driver or Windows component that its architecture cannot support.

Check Settings → System → About → System type. On ARM64 Windows, x86 application emulation uses architecture-specific Windows components; a DLL copied from an x64 computer is not a safe substitute.

Also note these limits:

  • WOW64 does not support 16-bit applications on 64-bit Windows.
  • WOW64 does not support 32-bit kernel drivers on 64-bit Windows.
  • A current application build or compatible driver may be required.
  • A random DLL replacement cannot convert an incompatible program into a supported one.

If the error names a driver or appears after installing hardware software, update the driver through the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Restart Windows and test the application.

If the device recently received a bad driver, open its Properties → Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available. Driver reinstall is not a standard repair for wow64.dll itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting through dozens of driver versions is easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers in its free scan and perform driver installation with the full version, but use the application vendor’s compatible driver when a specific program requires one.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is useful when the error started after an update, driver installation, cleanup tool, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs to review expected changes.
  6. Select Next → Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.

System Restore can revert system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without deleting personal files. It does not replace a full backup, and it may not be available or may not contain a useful restore point.

Fix 7: Repair-reinstall Windows

If DISM, SFC, security checks, and System Restore do not repair the component, use Windows’ repair-reinstall option where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Settings → System → Recovery and look for the option to reinstall or fix the current Windows version through Windows Update. Follow the displayed instructions and review what will be preserved before confirming.

A repair reinstall is preferable to a clean installation when it is available and appropriate. If Windows remains damaged, SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files, storage diagnostics show problems, or malware has compromised the system, back up personal data and consider hardware diagnostics or a clean Windows installation.

Why regsvr32 will not repair wow64.dll

regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components.

wow64.dll is a core Windows emulation and system DLL, not a normal COM component. Running:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 wow64.dll

is therefore inappropriate. It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. Registration does not restore a protected Windows file and does not repair the WOW64 subsystem. Microsoft documents the actual purpose of regsvr32.

What not to do

Do not download wow64.dll from a random DLL archive or copy it from another computer. The file may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, have the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the installed servicing state. It may also leave the real component-store corruption untouched.

Do not copy a file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory just because a message names that path. Do not assume that reinstalling DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ will restore WOW64. Do not enable random items under Turn Windows features on or off; WOW64 is supplied by Windows rather than being a feature you normally add manually.

FAQ

Does wow64.dll belong to a game or Office?

Normally, no. It is a Windows component used by the operating system’s WOW64 layer. A game or application may expose the error while Windows is loading that subsystem, but that does not make the file part of the game or Office installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should wow64.dll exist in both System32 and SysWOW64?

Not necessarily. The expected files depend on Windows edition and architecture. On 64-bit Windows, the two directories normally contain different architectures because of file-system redirection.

Why does only one program fail?

The application may be damaged, incompatible, using an incorrect loading path, or exposing a different missing dependency. Repair or verify that program before assuming that Windows is broken.

What if the file exists but the error remains?

The message may identify the first failed dependency rather than the defective file. Run DISM and SFC, check application repair options, confirm architecture compatibility, and inspect the application’s own logs or event timing.

What information should I collect before asking for help?

Record the exact error text, Windows edition and build, system type, affected executable, whether other 32-bit applications work, recent updates or security events, and the final DISM and SFC results. If SFC reports unrepaired files, preserve the relevant CBS log details before escalating.
