“The program can’t start because wpcmig.dll is missing from your computer.” If wpcmig.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or Windows reports that it is corrupted, repair the Windows component rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
wpcmig.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file named Windows Parental Controls Migration. It belongs to the legacy Parental Controls technology introduced in Windows Vista and expanded in Windows 7. Microsoft documents that this Parental Controls functionality is not supported in Windows 10, so an error on Windows 10 or Windows 11 commonly points to an old migration task, damaged system files, a quarantined file, or an outdated application.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what happened:
- The error appeared after Windows Update, an upgrade, rollback, cleanup, or malware removal: run DISM and SFC.
- Windows Security shows a recent detection: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error appears only when starting an old application: repair or reinstall that application, then test compatibility settings.
- The error began after a recent software, driver, or Windows change: use System Restore.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: use a Windows repair reinstall or matching installation media.
- The file exists outside a normal Windows location or has no valid Microsoft signature: treat it as suspicious and scan the computer.
- You were about to download
wpcmig.dllfrom a DLL site: stop. Manual replacement can install the wrong architecture, version, language, or malware.
What wpcmig.dll is
The file description is reported as Windows Parental Controls Migration, and Microsoft identifies Parental Controls as a built-in Windows feature. The component is associated mainly with older Windows installations and migration activity, especially Windows Vista and Windows 7. Microsoft’s Parental Controls documentation states that the functionality is not supported in Windows 10.

Historical file inventories list a Windows 7 copy as a Microsoft Corporation file commonly found under C:WindowsSystem32. They also describe it as a 32-bit Windows component. Treat those details as historical reference, not a universal rule for every Windows build. Do not choose a replacement based only on a filename, folder name, or reported file size.
Typical messages include:
- “The program can’t start because wpcmig.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Application could not be started because wpcmig.dll file is missing.”
- “Error loading wpcmig.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “wpcmig.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “wpcmig.dll could not be loaded.”
These messages do not prove that the DLL itself is the only problem. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency, a damaged component store, an application using stale registration, or a file that security software removed.
There is no verified Microsoft Visual C++ package, DirectX installer, or .NET redistributable that installs wpcmig.dll. Do not install those runtimes as a first response unless the application’s own error identifies a separate missing runtime.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is genuinely missing or corrupted.
1. Install updates and restart
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, try the operation that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
Do not close the window while DISM is working. It may appear to pause. When it finishes, note whether it reports that the restore operation completed successfully or that corruption could not be repaired.
3. Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when it finishes, then test the affected application or Windows operation again.

If the message says no integrity violations were found but the error remains, the cause may be an old application, a missing dependency, stale registration, or a non-system copy of the file.
Microsoft explains the supported DISM and SFC procedure.
Running these commands manually is safe, but repeated repair attempts can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows issues and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling an application remains the definitive fix when that application is the actual source of the error.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
Run Windows Update again, restart, and retry the command. If that fails, use a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition, language, build, and architecture:

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to the matching Windows repair source. Do not use an arbitrary Windows folder from another computer.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have removed or quarantined a damaged file, a false positive, or a malicious same-named file.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
wpcmig.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect its path, threat name, and action.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restore it only when the path, Microsoft signature, and provenance are trustworthy and the detection is clearly a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious item can put the computer at risk. See Microsoft’s guidance for Protection history.
After a legitimate restoration, run DISM followed by SFC. If the file was located in an unexpected application folder, do not restore it without scanning the computer.
If you suspect malware:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If the problem persists, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
Microsoft provides additional guidance for virus and threat protection.
Fix 3: Repair an old application that triggers the error
If Windows starts normally and the message appears only when opening an old program, the program may be invoking an obsolete Windows component, using stale COM information, or reporting a missing dependency under a misleading filename.
First identify the application named in the error. Then:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset, if available.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. Update the application before testing it again.
Do not assume that a game, graphics package, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, or .NET is responsible. No reliable public evidence identifies a particular modern game or application as the standard trigger for wpcmig.dll.
Fix 4: Use compatibility settings for legacy software
For an old program that worked on an earlier Windows release:

- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter, or enable Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test an appropriate older Windows mode.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application again.
If the program still fails, contact its developer or replace it with a supported version. Compatibility mode cannot restore an obsolete Windows feature that the application fundamentally requires.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the failure began after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, software installation, or system change.

If DISM, SFC, and System Restore do not resolve the problem, repair Windows rather than copying a DLL manually.
On Windows 11, try:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the same Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. See Microsoft’s Windows Update repair reinstall instructions.
If the option is unavailable, use matching Windows installation media and select Keep personal files and apps during setup. Microsoft describes this as an in-place Windows installation.

Back up important files first. Reset this PC is more disruptive because applications and settings may be removed.
Why regsvr32 usually will not fix this file
Do not start with:
regsvr32 wpcmig.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. The available export information for wpcmig.dll lists DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, not DllRegisterServer. Registration is therefore unlikely to repair the component and may produce an error.
Use DISM, SFC, application repair, or Windows recovery instead. Microsoft explains how Regsvr32 works.
Architecture and file-authenticity checks
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native system binaries while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. The historical wpcmig.dll record is described as 32-bit, but that does not establish the correct location for every Windows build.

Do not replace it with a file from another computer.
To investigate a copy:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details and check the description and company.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature.
A correct filename does not prove authenticity. An unsigned file, an unexpected location, inconsistent metadata, or repeated reappearance after deletion warrants a malware scan and Windows repair.
Updating drivers
Drivers are not a normal source of wpcmig.dll, and Device Manager will not replace this Windows component. However, if the error began after a driver change or the old application depends on a device driver, check Windows’ driver state:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after an update, or Update Driver when an approved update is available.
Avoid driver downloads from untrusted sites. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs updating; installation features require the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the need to repair Windows or reinstall the application that actually triggers wpcmig.dll.

Is wpcmig.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Windows Parental Controls Migration component. A file with the same name in an unexpected location is not automatically legitimate.
Is it still used by Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Microsoft states that the legacy Parental Controls functionality is not supported in Windows 10. Windows 10 and Windows 11 may still encounter the file during migration, compatibility, or damaged-installation scenarios, but its current use should not be assumed.
Should I download wpcmig.dll?
No. Random DLL downloads can provide the wrong architecture, version, language, signature, or malware. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, repair installation, or the official installer for the application involved.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file alone. No verified Microsoft redistributable package is known to install wpcmig.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if SFC says it found no problems?
Check whether the error names an old application, confirm the exact file path, inspect the digital signature, and repair or reinstall the application. The problem may be stale registration or a missing dependency rather than Windows file corruption.
When is the repair complete?
The repair is successful when the original operation starts without the wpcmig.dll message, SFC completes without unrepaired corruption, and the file is supplied by Windows servicing or a trustworthy signed installation rather than a downloaded copy.
