If Windows reports that wpdmtpdr.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or unable to load, repair Windows and the affected phone, camera, or media player connection instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this quick diagnostic checklist
Before changing system files, note:
- Which program or game displays the error.
- Whether it appears when Windows starts, when you connect a device, or only when launching one application.
- Whether the device appears in File Explorer.
- Whether Device Manager shows an MTP or Portable Devices error.
- Whether your Windows edition is N.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The file normally belongs here:
%windir%System32driversUMDFwpdmtpdr.dll
It is a User-Mode Driver Framework binary referenced by Microsoft’s WpdMtp.inf driver package. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, game dependency, or normal application DLL. Microsoft documents the file and its package location in its Windows Portable Devices package inventory and MTP INF documentation.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
A pending Windows update can contain the driver package or servicing fixes needed to restore MTP.
- Press Windows + I.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Open Advanced options and select Optional updates.
- Install relevant driver updates if Windows offers them.
- Restart the PC.
- Unlock the phone or portable device and reconnect it.
Check whether the device appears under This PC or whether the original error has disappeared. If the problem remains, continue with Windows component repair.

2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from its expected protected location or Windows reports that it cannot load the driver.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies clean component files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired store. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker repair instructions.
Success means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. Reconnect the MTP device and test the application again.
If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, install pending updates and retry. Microsoft also documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess; the source must match the installed Windows edition, build, and architecture.
Running these commands manually is useful, but repeatedly guessing whether the component store or a related driver is damaged is time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problem and show what needs repair; its full version performs the repair, but it is not required and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first step.
3. Check whether Windows is an N edition
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit certain media technologies, including Windows Portable Devices and MTP functionality. That can make a phone, camera, or media player fail even when Windows itself is otherwise healthy.
To check:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Open About.
- Read the Windows specifications section.
- Check the edition name for an N suffix.
If you have Windows 10 N:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose Add a feature.
- Find Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
If you have Windows 11 N:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft maintains the current instructions in its Media Feature Pack list for Windows N editions. After restarting, reconnect the device. If it still fails, reinstall it through Device Manager.

4. Reinstall the affected MTP device
A Device Manager error is not exactly the same as a missing-DLL dialog. A loader message usually points to a missing, corrupt, misplaced, or incompatible component. Device Manager codes such as Code 1, Code 10, Code 28, or Code 31 indicate that Windows cannot configure, start, find, or load the device driver correctly.
Reinstall the device as follows:
- Disconnect the phone, camera, or media player.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices.
- Also check Other devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Reconnect the device and identify the entry that appears or changes.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the device.
Windows may reinstall the driver automatically. If it does not:
- Open Device Manager again.
- Select the computer name at the top of the device tree.
- Open Action.
- Select Scan for hardware changes.
- Right-click the portable device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If the device is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers, do not uninstall unrelated USB controllers at random. Remove only the entry clearly associated with the failing portable device.
Microsoft’s Device Manager driver instructions cover updating and reinstalling hardware drivers.
Manually hunting through many optional driver packages is tedious, especially when the stale entry is not obvious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its full version installs updates, but Windows Update and Device Manager are sufficient for this MTP repair.

A DLL message can appear at the same time as a completely separate hardware or device-mode problem.
Try these checks:
- Unlock the device before connecting it.
- Look for the USB notification on the device.
- Select File Transfer, MTP, or a similarly named mode.
- Try another data-capable USB cable.
- Connect directly to another USB port.
- Avoid a USB hub or front-panel extension temporarily.
- Test the device on another computer if possible.
- Test a different phone or portable device on the same PC.
A charge-only cable will not establish an MTP connection. If another cable or computer works, the Windows DLL was probably not the underlying problem.

For cameras and some media players, a vendor application may control the connection. If Windows sees the device but one application does not, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer and check its compatibility settings. Do not replace a Windows driver DLL just because a single program displays its name.
6. Check antivirus quarantine and system changes
Security software may quarantine a damaged or modified system component. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
wpdmtpdr.dllor a related driver. - If a file was quarantined, verify that it is from the original Windows path and carries a valid Microsoft signature before restoring it.
- Run a Full scan if the file keeps disappearing.
- Use an offline scan if malware is suspected.
If the file repeatedly vanishes, possible causes include antivirus action, malware, disk errors, or damaged Windows servicing. Repair Windows rather than copying a replacement from another machine.
If the problem began after an update, driver change, cleanup utility, or failed installation, System Restore may undo the change:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, applications, and system settings. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Downloading an isolated DLL is a poor repair for this component. A file can have the right name but the wrong Windows build, architecture, servicing level, dependencies, or digital signature. It may also contain malware. Copying it into System32, an application folder, or the root of System32 can leave the MTP package inconsistent.

Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit driver directory, use a file from another Windows release, or place it beside a game to silence a loader message. The correct source is Windows servicing, Windows Update, the Media Feature Pack for N editions, or the affected device’s official driver installation process.
The documented path is:
%windir%System32driversUMDFwpdmtpdr.dll
The file’s exact version varies with Windows release, architecture, and servicing level. A filename and apparent size are not enough to prove that a replacement is safe.
Do not routinely run regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. MTP installation can register related components as part of the INF-based driver setup, but manually running:
regsvr32 wpdmtpdr.dll
is not the normal fix and may produce an error because this driver component is not intended to be repaired that way. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or Device Manager instead.

If the error says “not designed to run”
That wording does not prove that the file is simply missing. It can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, a damaged dependency, or a file from a different Windows build. Repair the component store, run SFC, and reinstall the affected device rather than trying multiple downloaded versions.
Windows architecture also matters:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Open About.
- Check System type.
Do not mix files between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows. Let Windows supply the matching UMDF driver package.

If the problem continues
Use this escalation order:
- Install Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then SFC.
- Install Media Feature Pack if Windows is an N edition.
- Remove and reinstall the affected device in Device Manager.
- Test another cable, port, USB mode, and computer.
- Check antivirus quarantine and run a malware scan.
- Try System Restore.
- Test with a new Windows user profile.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair if servicing repairs repeatedly fail.
If only one application fails while File Explorer and Device Manager work normally, repair or reinstall that application instead. If every MTP device fails, the problem is more likely in Windows’ portable-device stack, servicing state, USB path, or hardware environment.
FAQ
Is wpdmtpdr.dll a game or Visual C++ file?
No. It is part of Microsoft’s Windows Portable Devices and MTP driver infrastructure. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a justified primary fix.

It should not normally be placed in an application directory or directly in the root of System32.
Why does my phone disappear from File Explorer?
Windows may be unable to load the MTP driver, the device may be set to charging-only mode, or the cable, USB port, hub, or device hardware may be failing. Check all of those before replacing system files.
Should I use regsvr32?
No, not as a routine repair. Rebuild the Windows component and reinstall the portable-device driver through the documented Windows tools.
What if DISM and SFC report repairs but the error returns?
Install updates, reinstall the affected device, inspect antivirus history, test another user profile, and use System Restore. Persistent failures may require an in-place Windows repair or investigation of disk and malware issues.
