wpwizdll.dll errors may appear as:
- “The file ‘Wpwizdll.dll’ on Web Publishing Wizard disk cannot be found.”
- “This application failed to start because wpwizdll.dll was not found.”
- “The file wpwizdll.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading wpwizdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because wpwizdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
The 60-second answer is simple: wpwizdll.dll is a genuine, very old Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard component, not a normal Windows 11 or Windows 10 runtime. Identify the program requesting it, then repair or reinstall that parent program from its original Microsoft installation media rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
What is wpwizdll.dll?
wpwizdll.dll is associated with the Web Publishing Wizard, an old Microsoft Internet Services component used to publish files to websites and servers. Microsoft documentation describes the Web Publishing Wizard as an Internet Explorer-era component, and Microsoft included it with the Internet Explorer 4 software stack.
The file’s internal description is reported as:
COM-server voor de wizard Webpublicaties
That translates roughly to “COM server for the Web Publishing Wizard.” The component was developed by Microsoft Corporation and was distributed with legacy Internet Services software.
Historical Internet Explorer packages placed the file inside Web Publishing Wizard cabinet files named WPIE4X86.CAB and WPIE5X86.CAB. The X86 naming is important: these were 32-bit packages. They are not modern 64-bit Windows system components.

Some third-party file inventories report metadata such as Microsoft Internet Services, version 6.1.10.0, and a size of approximately 109 KB. Treat those values as reported historical inventory information, not as universal specifications for every copy. Internet Explorer, Office, and other legacy installation sources may contain different builds.
There is no current standalone Microsoft redistributable specifically for wpwizdll.dll that should be downloaded and installed separately.
Which programs use it?
The most likely parent software is one of these:
- Internet Explorer 4 or 5-era Web Publishing Wizard components
- Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT-era Internet software
- Office 2000 setup or repair
- FrontPage 2000
- Another old application that bundled or called the Web Publishing Wizard
The strongest documented setup scenario involves Office 2000. Its installer could request the Web Publishing Wizard disk while installing Office components in stages. Microsoft documented this particularly in connection with certain USRobotics and 3Com WinModems.
A current game or modern runtime is unlikely to depend on this file. If a recent program displays the error, check whether the message actually comes from an old installer, compatibility utility, bundled setup program, or legacy application launched alongside it.

The parent application is incomplete
This is the most likely cause. A partial installation, interrupted repair, disk cleanup, or failed uninstall can remove the DLL while leaving an application entry behind.
The file may also be present in the correct installation source but never copied because setup could not read the CD, cabinet file, or installation image.
Office 2000 is requesting Web Publishing Wizard
Office 2000 setup may ask for the Web Publishing Wizard disk instead of showing a normal Windows DLL error. This often happens when Office components are installed in stages.
In this situation, the missing file is only part of the problem. The installer also needs the matching cabinet package and the related publishing components, so copying a DLL into a system folder is not an equivalent repair.

Antivirus software quarantined the file
Security software may remove an old binary because legacy files are unusual, unsigned according to modern expectations, or loaded by an obsolete installer. Open Windows Security and inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
Only restore a file when you can establish that it came from trusted original Microsoft media. A random replacement from a DLL download site is not a safe substitute.
The wrong architecture or release was used
The historical packages were x86. A 32-bit legacy application may need the 32-bit Web Publishing Wizard component even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

A file from an Internet Explorer 4 package may not be interchangeable with one from an Internet Explorer 5 or Office installation. Different releases can have different dependencies, registration behavior, and file contents.

This is possible but less likely. Public historical evidence points to wpwizdll.dll being an application-owned legacy component rather than a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 file protected by Windows Resource Protection.
That is why SFC and DISM should not be your first repair attempt.
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
Before replacing anything, find the parent application.
Check the title bar and full text of the error. An installer may say “Office,” “FrontPage,” “Internet Explorer,” or “Web Publishing Wizard.” If Windows names an executable, record it.
You can also check Windows logs:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the same time the DLL message appeared.
- Read the General and Details tabs for the application or executable name.
If the error appears only when launching one old program, that program is the best repair target. If it appears during Office setup, use the Office installation source. If it appears after antivirus activity, inspect Protection history first.
Do not begin by searching for a copy of the filename. The calling program determines which release and architecture are appropriate.
Fix 2: Repair the application that needs the DLL
For a recent Windows application that still provides a repair option:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program again.
Some classic desktop applications use Control Panel instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if setup requests it.
If the repair option is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall the same application from its original, legitimate installation source. For Office 2000, FrontPage, and Internet Explorer-era software, this usually means the original CD or a verified matching installation image.
What success looks like
The application should launch without requesting wpwizdll.dll, or its installer should proceed without asking for an unrelated DLL. If setup asks for a Web Publishing Wizard disk, supply the correct original source instead of browsing to a copied DLL.

Fix 3: Repair Office 2000 or FrontPage from its original source
If Office 2000 setup specifically requests the Web Publishing Wizard disk, do not cancel the process and copy a file into System32.

- If using an image, mount the legitimate image in Windows.
- Start Office setup again.
- When setup requests the Web Publishing Wizard source, browse to the matching media.
- Allow setup to copy and register the complete component.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Run Office setup again if the installer was interrupted.
The relevant historical packages were named WPIE4X86.CAB and WPIE5X86.CAB. The exact package depends on the product and release. The installer must be allowed to select its matching files because the Web Publishing Wizard includes more than wpwizdll.dll, including related publishing components.
If you installed Office components in stages, let the current setup finish, restart when asked, and then run setup again if it continues requesting the component. Microsoft’s historical Office guidance describes this as a setup-specific condition rather than a general Windows DLL failure.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection history
If the file disappeared after a scan or cleanup operation:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand any detection related to the old application or installation media.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that the parent application came from original Microsoft media and that the detection is not a sign of a tampered installer.
After verifying the source:
- Restore the item only if Windows Security identifies it as a false positive or the file is confirmed genuine.
- Run a full security scan.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application.
- Test the program again.
If the DLL appeared in an unexpected temporary folder or arrived with an untrusted download, leave it quarantined and perform a full scan instead.
Fix 5: Use System Restore if the failure is recent
System Restore can help when the error started immediately after an application installation, driver update, cleanup operation, or system change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not replace the need to repair the parent application. It is useful when a recent change removed or damaged the legacy component.
If no suitable restore point exists, return to the application’s original installation source rather than trying unrelated DLL copies.

Fix 6: Install Windows updates
Windows Update will not normally download this legacy application DLL, but current updates can repair operating-system components and compatibility problems.

- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
If the old application is fundamentally incompatible with your Windows release, updates will not convert it into a supported modern program. In that case, use the original software in a supported virtual machine or replace the old publishing workflow.
Fix 7: Run DISM and SFC only for possible Windows corruption
Use these commands when other Windows components are also failing, Windows Update reports errors, or the problem began with broader system corruption. They are not a substitute for reinstalling an application-owned Web Publishing Wizard package.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Fix 8: Update drivers only when the trigger is hardware software
A driver is not the normal owner of wpwizdll.dll. However, if the error began during installation of an old modem, printer utility, scanner package, or other hardware software, identify that package rather than treating the DLL as a generic driver file.
To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Modems, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Print queues.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver only when a compatible driver is available from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the original application.
For an old device, Windows Update may not provide a compatible driver. Do not install a random driver package simply because its installer mentions the missing DLL.

Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of several old driver packages is compatible can be slow. Should you use Windows Features?
Windows Features does not provide a modern checkbox that reliably reinstalls wpwizdll.dll.
You can inspect available optional components:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the list.
- Do not enable unrelated features hoping they will add Web Publishing Wizard.
Internet Explorer-era components are obsolete on current Windows releases, and enabling an unrelated Windows feature will not recreate the matching application package. Use the parent product’s installer instead.
Should you use regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing runtime DLL may not provide those entry points, and registration will not restore missing dependencies or recreate the correct installer configuration.
If the original Web Publishing Wizard installer explicitly requires registration, let that installer perform it. Manual registration should be considered only when all of these are true:
- You have a verified legacy binary from the matching installation source.
- The application documentation specifically requires registration.
- You know whether the application is 32-bit.
- You use the matching 32-bit registration tool on 64-bit Windows.
If you run regsvr32 and receive “The module could not be loaded,” that can mean a missing dependency, wrong bitness, or an incompatible environment. It does not prove that another downloaded copy will work.

Do not batch-register DLLs or place wpwizdll.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely because an online guide suggests it. Its correct location depends on the legacy installer.
32-bit versus 64-bit Windows
The historical WPIE4X86.CAB and WPIE5X86.CAB packages identify this component as 32-bit.
That matters because:
- A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit component.
- A 64-bit Windows installation can still run some 32-bit legacy programs.
- A 64-bit replacement DLL is not an appropriate substitute.
System32andSysWOW64have architecture-specific behavior on 64-bit Windows, so copying files into either folder can make troubleshooting worse.- Different Internet Explorer and Office-era packages may contain different builds.
Use the original setup program to place and register the file. Do not manually choose a Windows folder based on its name.

Is wpwizdll.dll a Windows system file?
It is a genuine Microsoft file, but it is associated with the legacy Web Publishing Wizard and Microsoft Internet Services stack. It should not automatically be treated as a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL.
Does Microsoft still provide a standalone download?
