wscmisetup.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component associated with installing Winsock transport and namespace providers. If Windows says it is missing, cannot be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair Windows components instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

What wscmisetup.dll is

The file description is “Installers for Winsock Transport and Name Space Providers.” It is related to installing networking providers, not the Winsock runtime itself.

Public file records document it mainly in Windows Vista and Windows 7-era installations:

Windows generation Architecture Publicly recorded details
Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Windows component with separate architecture-specific builds
Windows 7 32-bit Microsoft Windows component
Windows 10 and 11 Not confirmed by the available public records Repair Windows rather than substituting an older copy

The recorded Windows 7 and Vista versions are not one universal version for every Windows installation. A file from an older system may have the correct filename but still be incompatible with your Windows build, architecture, or calling application.

The error may appear in several forms:

  • “The program can’t start because wscmisetup.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because wscmisetup.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting wscmisetup.dll.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “wscmisetup.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wscmisetup.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL or by the application may be missing.

First, identify when the error occurs

Before changing files, record the exact message and where it appears.

If it appears during Windows startup

The likely causes include a damaged Windows component, a failed update, antivirus quarantine, or an old startup entry left by removed software. Repair Windows first, then inspect startup entries if the message remains.

If it appears while installing networking software

The installer may be trying to register or install a Winsock transport or namespace provider. Use the original installer from the software vendor, run it as administrator, and check whether the installer supports your Windows version.

If it appears when launching one older application

The application may be calling a Windows component incorrectly, using an outdated installer, or reporting a missing dependency. Repair Windows, then repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.

Do not assume a particular game, driver, or application caused the problem unless the exact error consistently identifies it.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

This is the safest first repair because wscmisetup.dll is identified as part of Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
  5. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Restart Windows when DISM completes.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. By default, it may use Windows Update as a repair source.

Run System File Checker

After restarting:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart the computer again.
  3. Repeat the action that produced the wscmisetup.dll error.

A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error is gone, no manual DLL replacement is needed.

If you repeatedly run SFC without knowing whether the component store is healthy, you can spend time repairing the same damaged source. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct path for a Windows-owned component.

If DISM cannot find repair files

Use a matching Windows repair source only if you have genuine installation media or another appropriate source for the installed edition and build.

  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the real path to the repair source. Do not use a random Windows folder from another computer. A mismatched source can fail or introduce another version mismatch.

Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM guidance explains the recommended order. Microsoft also documents repair sources in its guide to repairing a Windows image.

Fix 2: Check the file and scan it with SFC

If you want to check a specific path, first confirm that the file is actually expected there. Do not copy a replacement into System32 or `SysWOW64 just because an error page suggested it.

On systems where the targeted SFC options are supported, use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32wscmisetup.dll

If Windows reports a problem, run:

sfc /scanfile=C:WindowsSystem32wscmisetup.dll

Use the corresponding Windows path for the installation you are checking. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use a different system redirection path, so the path shown by an application error is important.

If the file is in an application folder rather than a Windows system folder, do not assume that copy is genuine. Check its digital signature through Properties → Digital Signatures, and identify which program placed it there.

Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates

A failed update or interrupted servicing operation can leave protected components inconsistent.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Run DISM and SFC again in that order.
  7. Test the affected program.

On supported Windows 11 installations, you may also see:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.

This reinstall option is designed to reinstall the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. Availability depends on the Windows installation and configuration. Microsoft documents the process in Fix problems by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have quarantined a damaged or suspicious file.

Rank #3
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time the error began.
  5. Expand a detection to see its path and status.

Do not restore the file automatically. Confirm that the path belongs to Windows, review its signature and provenance, and scan the computer first. Restoring a malicious file can put the system and data at risk.

If the file was removed after malware cleanup, repair Windows with DISM and SFC rather than restoring an unverified copy. Microsoft explains the quarantine workflow in Protection history in Windows Security.

Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error

If the message appears only when launching one older application, repair that application after completing Windows repair.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.
  9. If Repair does not help, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
  10. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application using its original official installer.

If the application has its own launcher, use its file-verification or repair function. Do not assume reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will restore wscmisetup.dll. No authoritative Microsoft source identifies those runtimes as distributors of this Windows component.

If reinstalling the application creates the same error, check whether it supports your Windows version and whether its installer is attempting to use an outdated networking component.

Fix 6: Update related network drivers only when evidence points there

A network driver is not the same thing as wscmisetup.dll, but a failed networking installation can expose related compatibility problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the adapter involved in the failure.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for a device error.
  7. Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only with a driver supplied for the exact computer or adapter.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not uninstall a working network adapter driver unless you have a replacement and know how to restore network access. If the error began immediately after a driver update, use Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when that option is available.

Manually checking many driver versions can make it difficult to know what changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the detected results, while driver installation through the full version is optional; use the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official driver when reinstalling the application remains the real fix.

Fix 7: Use recovery tools if repair still fails

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, collect the result before taking a more invasive step.

Check the SFC log at:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

Record:

  • The complete error message
  • The application or installer name
  • Your Windows edition and architecture
  • The path shown for wscmisetup.dll
  • The date the problem began
  • Whether it followed an update, uninstall, cleanup, cloning operation, or malware removal
  • The final DISM and SFC results
  • Any relevant Event Viewer entry

If the problem began immediately after a known change, try System Restore:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  6. Follow the prompts and restart.

Back up important files first. If Windows remains damaged, use an in-place repair installation or the appropriate recovery media. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options and installation-media repair guidance describe those paths.

What not to do

Do not download a random DLL

DLL download sites websites may provide the wrong version, architecture, or a modified file. The copy may also fail to fix a missing dependency or damaged component store. Use Windows repair, official Windows media, or the affected program’s official installer instead.

Do not copy a file from another computer

A Vista or Windows 7 copy may not match your Windows build. Even two computers running the same broad Windows release can differ in architecture, servicing state, and component version.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general fix

Do not use:

regsvr32 wscmisetup.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The public export inventory for this file lists DllCanUnloadNow and DllGetClassObject, not DllRegisterServer. Registration is therefore not an appropriate general repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not disable antivirus casually

Review the detection and verify the file before allowing anything. If malware may be involved, run a complete security scan and repair Windows afterward.

Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit files

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit Windows installation can use different search paths and system redirection behavior. The correct repair must match the calling process and installed Windows component. Microsoft documents this behavior in its guide to DLL search order.

FAQ

Is wscmisetup.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. It is identified as a Microsoft Windows component associated with installers for Winsock transport and namespace providers.

Is it a driver or a redistributable?

It is not the Winsock runtime itself, and no standalone Microsoft redistributable was identified for it. Treat it as a Windows component rather than a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the message mention a missing module when the DLL exists?

A dependency may be missing, the file may be incompatible, or the application may be loading a private copy from another folder. Check the exact path and repair Windows before replacing anything.

Should I use regsvr32?

No. The available export information does not show the registration entry point that regsvr32 normally requires.

What if SFC says it repaired files but the error remains?

Restart, run SFC again, and identify the application producing the message. Then check whether it is loading a private copy or reporting a missing dependency.

What if SFC cannot repair the file?

Run DISM first, retry SFC, inspect CBS.log, and move to a matching repair source, Windows recovery, or an in-place repair installation if the component remains damaged.
