If wscproxystub.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL. It is a Microsoft Windows Security Center component, and the safest repair path is Windows Update followed by DISM and System File Checker.
What this file actually does
wscproxystub.dll is the Windows Security Center ISV Proxy Stub. “ISV” means independent software vendor. The DLL provides a proxy-stub component associated with interfaces that allow security software and Windows security components to communicate with Windows Security Center.

It is a Windows system component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET library, or ordinary game dependency. A program may display the error while starting, but that does not prove the program supplied or owns the DLL.
Historical Windows file inventories place it in:
C:WindowsSystem32
Windows packages also contain architecture-specific copies. Documented examples include separate x86 and x64 files for Windows 8, Windows 8.1 builds in the 6.3.9600 family, Windows 7 builds, and Windows 10 build 14393. Those historical versions and sizes are not universal replacement specifications. Do not copy an old file into a current Windows installation.

A genuine system copy should normally be under the Windows directory and carry Microsoft file-signature information. A copy with the same filename inside a game, random application folder, Downloads, or a temporary directory deserves additional scrutiny.
What the error usually means
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | First response |
|---|---|---|
wscproxystub.dll is missing |
Windows cannot find the expected component | Install updates, then run DISM and SFC |
The specified module could not be found |
The DLL or a related dependency is unavailable | Repair Windows rather than copying a DLL |
wscproxystub.dll is corrupted |
The file or component store may be damaged | Run DISM before SFC |
The program cannot start |
A generic Windows loader message | Do not assume the application owns the file |
| Error began after an update | The update may be incomplete or damaged | Restart, check update history, and install pending updates |
| Windows Security also fails | Related security components may be damaged | Repair the Windows image and check Protection history |
| The file appears outside Windows | It may be a duplicate, bundled copy, or suspicious file | Check its signature and location before opening it |
The message alone cannot distinguish corruption, quarantine, malware, disk trouble, or a failed update. Work through the repairs in order.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending or incomplete update is one of the simplest causes of a missing Windows component.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, select Check for updates. On Windows 11, select Check for updates if it is shown.
- Install every available Windows update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try opening Windows Security or the application that displayed the error.
If the error returns, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly restart without repairing the component store.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to replace damaged protected system files. Run DISM first.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes. A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test again.

The SFC result determines the next step:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files were not currently detected as damaged. Continue to the antivirus and update checks below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If it still cannot repair the files, use the repair-source or in-place-repair steps later in this guide.
- DISM cannot find the source files: Use a matching Windows installation source. The source must match the installed Windows version and edition. Do not use a random DLL as the source.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions cover the supported order and result messages. Microsoft’s DISM repair documentation explains how to provide a matching /Source when Windows Update cannot supply repair files.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to see what changed or which component remains damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the specific problems, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the supported repair path.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false positive, or the file may have been removed because Windows was tampered with. Check the event before restoring anything.
Check Microsoft Defender Protection history
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event naming
wscproxystub.dll. - Open the event and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
On Windows 10, the path is generally Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Restore the file only when its location, Microsoft signature, and origin are trustworthy and the detection is clearly a false positive. If the event identifies a suspicious directory, do not restore it merely because the filename is correct. Run a current Defender scan instead.
Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so an older quarantine may no longer appear. If the file is absent and no event is available, repair Windows with DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement.
Fix 4: Check the file location and signature
This helps distinguish a missing Windows component from a suspicious duplicate.
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Open the Windows installation drive, usually C:.
- Browse to
C:WindowsSystem32. - Search for
wscproxystub.dll. - Right-click any result and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Select the signer and choose Details to confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
Do not treat a matching filename as proof of authenticity. A copy in an application folder is not automatically malicious, but it should not be used to replace the Windows copy. On 64-bit Windows, architecture-specific system components must match the operating system and the component that loads them. A random 32-bit DLL is not a safe substitute for a 64-bit system file.

You can also use Windows Security to scan the folder:
- Right-click the suspicious file or its containing folder.
- Select Scan with Microsoft Defender.
- Follow the result and leave detected threats quarantined unless you have verified the detection.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application only after Windows is healthy
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and the security checks complete successfully but one program still reports the error, repair that program.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or Microsoft Store listing.
Do not assume that reinstalling the program will recreate a Windows system DLL. If Windows Security, other security software, or multiple programs report related failures, return to DISM and SFC instead.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 blindly
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It works with DLLs that expose the appropriate DllRegisterServer registration routine. Microsoft documents it as a registration operation, not as a way to restore every missing or damaged DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not run:
regsvr32 wscproxystub.dll
unless authoritative documentation for the exact Windows build confirms that registration is required and supported. The applicability of regsvr32 to every build of this proxy-stub file is not established. Running it blindly can produce another error without repairing the component.

A driver does not normally provide wscproxystub.dll, so Device Manager is not the first repair location. Use it when the error began after a hardware change, a security-device update, or a failed Windows update.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click a device showing a warning icon.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Review the driver provider, date, and status.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows.
Manually hunting through many driver packages can leave you guessing which version is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while its full version handles installation; it is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or the official driver source.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error started directly after a driver, update, or software installation, System Restore may return system files and settings to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not remove personal files, but it can roll back programs, drivers, system files, and settings. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what is affected.
Fix 9: Perform a repair reinstall when Windows remains damaged
Use this escalation when DISM cannot repair the image, SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files, or Windows Security and related components remain broken.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Allow the computer to restart.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
Another supported method is an in-place repair using matching Microsoft installation media:
- Obtain installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - Select Change what to keep.
- Choose Keep personal files and apps.
- Confirm the selection and begin the installation.
Microsoft provides repair-reinstall instructions for Windows 11 and installation-media instructions.
Why downloading the DLL is unsafe
There is no verified official Microsoft page offering wscproxystub.dll as an independent download. Random DLL sites can provide:
- A file from the wrong Windows release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or malicious file
- A copy that does not match Windows manifests and component servicing
- An old file that hides the real corruption
Copying a DLL into System32 or an application folder may remove one message while leaving Windows damaged. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching Microsoft installation source, System Restore, or an in-place repair instead.

FAQ
Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 include wscproxystub.dll?
It is a Microsoft Windows Security Center component, and documented Windows packages include it. Exact contents, versions, and architecture vary by Windows release and build, so do not assume that a historical file inventory proves the correct file for every current installation.
Is wscproxystub.dll malware?
The Microsoft system component is legitimate. Malware can use the same filename, however. Check the path and Microsoft signature rather than judging the file by name alone.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. This is not identified as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Repair Windows first.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Not blindly. Its registration requirements are not verified for every build, and regsvr32 only applies to DLLs that support the required registration routine.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If the failure persists, use a matching repair source or an in-place Windows repair. Replacing the DLL from a download site is not the supported solution.
What if Windows Security itself will not open?
Check Protection history, run a Defender scan, then complete the Windows Update, DISM, and SFC sequence. If related Windows Security components remain broken, use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Do not use that as the first repair. Windows builds, editions, architectures, manifests, and component versions can differ. Repair the installation from its own servicing sources instead.
When should I suspect disk failure?
Suspect storage or filesystem trouble when files repeatedly become corrupted, SFC keeps finding new damage, applications crash in unrelated areas, or files disappear again after repair. Back up important data before deeper troubleshooting and investigate the drive’s health.
