Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- Which program, scanner, printer utility, or Windows feature displays the error
- The exact message, such as “wsdscanproxy.dll was not found” or “could not be loaded”
- Whether it appeared after Windows Update, a crash, cleanup, antivirus action, or device installation
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The path shown in the message, if one appears
wsdscanproxy.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Function Discovery and Web Services for Devices, commonly called WSD. It helps Windows discover and communicate with network-connected scanners and printers.
The safest repair is to install pending Windows updates, then run DISM followed by SFC. Do not download this DLL from a random file-sharing site.

What wsdscanproxy.dll does
Microsoft identifies this component as Function Discovery WSD Scanner Proxy Dll. Windows includes WSD support for network imaging devices, including scanners that use Windows Image Acquisition and Web Services for Devices.

A known Windows 10 sample is located at:
C:WindowsSystem32WSDScanProxy.dll
The path and file details can vary by Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and language. A public file record documents a Microsoft-signed 64-bit sample with version 10.0.19041.1, but that is not the universal version for every installation. This is a Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET file. Installing those runtimes solely because this filename appears will normally not restore it.
Error messages you may see
Depending on Windows and the application reporting the failure, the wording may include:
- “The program can’t start because WSDScanProxy.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because WSDScanProxy.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting WSDScanProxy.dll.”
- “Error loading WSDScanProxy.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “WSDScanProxy.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “WSDScanProxy.dll could not be loaded.”
- “Cannot find C:WindowsSystem32WSDScanProxy.dll.”
These are common Windows DLL-error patterns. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file alone is missing. A dependency, damaged component store, incorrect architecture, or invalid copy can produce the same result.

Windows Update is the quickest supported way to restore a protected component.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything available.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected application or try the scanner or printer again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Test the program or device again.
If the error began after an interrupted update, this may complete the pending component installation. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC uses that store to restore protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application, scanner, or printer.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restarting is required before retesting. If SFC says it could not repair some files, review the result, run DISM again if necessary, and then repeat SFC.

If DISM cannot find repair files, use a repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid matching source. Do not use an arbitrary folder or a DLL copied from another computer.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
An antivirus action can remove or quarantine a legitimate Windows file, although a detection should not be ignored automatically.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
WSDScanProxy.dll. - Review the detection name, file path, and action taken.
Restore or allow the file only when all of these are true:
- The file is in the expected Windows location
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft
- A full security scan does not indicate broader malware
- The detection appears to be a false positive
Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again. Do not override a credible malware detection merely to remove the startup message. Run a full scan, then repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Fix 4: Repair the scanner or printer installation
A WSD device problem does not prove that WSDScanProxy.dll itself is missing. If the error appears only when adding or using a network scanner or printer, repair the device path as well.
Remove and reinstall the device
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11.
- On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected device.
- Click Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current Windows driver or setup package from the scanner or printer manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Install it using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Add the device again and test scanning or printing.
If the installer offers both a WSD connection and a manufacturer network connection, follow the vendor’s documented recommendation. Microsoft describes WSD as a framework for network-connected printing and scanning, but a device driver cannot replace a damaged Windows system component.

Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Print queues, and Printers, as applicable.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the status under the General tab.
- Use Update driver if an approved driver is available.
- If the device remains faulty, select Uninstall device, restart, and reinstall the manufacturer’s driver.

Fix 5: Verify the path, signature, and architecture
Do not assume every file named WSDScanProxy.dll is the correct Windows file.
A copy in C:WindowsSystem32 is consistent with the documented location, but an identically named copy elsewhere is not automatically malware. It deserves a provenance and signature check.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the file shown in the error.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
- Open Details and compare the description with Function Discovery WSD Scanner Proxy Dll.
Also check whether the application and Windows architecture match:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Read System type.
- Check whether the affected application is 32-bit or 64-bit if its documentation provides that information.
Do not copy an x86, x64, or ARM64 DLL interchangeably. Windows builds and servicing levels matter too. DISM, SFC, or Windows Setup should restore the correct component rather than manual copying.
Do not use regsvr32 as the first repair
regsvr32 registers certain DLL-based COM components. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair tool.
A file record lists registration-related exports for WSDScanProxy.dll, so an intact and correctly matched copy may technically support registration. That does not mean registration will solve this error. It cannot recreate a missing file, repair Windows servicing metadata, restore a missing dependency, or fix component-store corruption.
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 WSDScanProxy.dll
Use DISM and SFC for a missing or corrupted Windows component. Consider registration only when a specific Microsoft or application support procedure explicitly requires it and you have the correct file in the correct system location.

Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download wsdscanproxy.dll from a DLL collection or file-sharing website. A replacement may have the wrong:
- Windows build
- Architecture
- Language
- Digital signature
- Dependency set
It may also be modified. Even a genuine-looking replacement can leave the component store damaged and cause the error to return.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or Windows installation repair instead. For a scanner or printer, use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package.

If the problem began immediately after a driver, update, cleanup operation, or software installation, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Click Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally leaves personal files untouched, but it rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs associated with the restore point.
Fix 7: Reinstall Windows components without removing apps
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and restart when requested.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while repairing system files and components and preserving apps, files, and settings. If this option is unavailable or fails, back up important files and use a matching Windows installation source or an in-place repair installation.
FAQ
Is wsdscanproxy.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft’s Windows Function Discovery and WSD scanning components. A Microsoft signature and expected Windows path provide stronger identification than the filename alone.

Is it part of a printer or scanner driver?
It is a Windows component used in the WSD scanner and network-device path. The printer or scanner driver may still be the cause when the error appears only during device setup or use.

Usually no. There is no evidence that those redistributables own this Windows component. Repair Windows first.
Will copying the DLL into System32 fix the error?
It is not a safe default. The copy may be the wrong build or architecture, and manual replacement does not repair Windows component metadata. Run DISM and SFC instead.
What if the DLL is present but Windows says it is not designed to run on Windows?
Check its path, Microsoft digital signature, architecture, and Windows integrity. A damaged file or dependency can produce this message. Do not replace it with an unverified download.
What if only one application reports the error?
Repair Windows first. If the system passes repair checks, update or reinstall that application. A stale launcher, failed uninstall, or application-specific dependency request may be responsible.

Escalate when DISM and SFC cannot repair files, the error returns after every restart, several Windows components fail, or you see signs of disk failure or malware. Back up important data, scan the system, then use System Restore, Windows repair reinstall, or installation media.
