wsmres.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file, and wsmres.dll errors usually indicate damage to Windows components rather than a missing game or application runtime. The file is the WSMan Resource DLL, a supporting resource for Windows Remote Management (WinRM).
The safest repair is to let Windows restore its own matching copy with DISM, followed by System File Checker. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or begin by running regsvr32.

What wsmres.dll does
wsmres.dll belongs to Windows Remote Management, Microsoft’s implementation of the WS-Management protocol. It is a resource file used by the WinRM component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET library, or separate redistributable.
Windows may report messages such as:
- “WsmRes.dll is corrupted”
- “WsmRes.dll cannot be located”
- “WsmRes.dll file cannot be loaded”
- “Module was not found”
- “Application could not be started because WsmRes.dll file is missing”
These messages are not a single official Microsoft error catalog. They can appear when Windows cannot read, locate, or load the component correctly.

Where wsmres.dll should be located
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%windir%System32WsmRes.dllfor the native 64-bit component%windir%SysWOW64WsmRes.dllfor the 32-bit counterpart
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Windows filesystem redirection helps 32-bit programs access the appropriate architecture.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, and do not replace either file with a copy from another Windows release. A replacement can have the wrong architecture, build, language resources, or digital signature.
To check whether Windows can find the files, open Command Prompt and run:

Finding a file does not prove that it is healthy. The repair procedure below is still the correct next step if Windows reports that it is corrupt or cannot load it.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 minutes to over an hour, depending on Windows Update and the extent of component damage.
This is the primary fix for a missing or damaged wsmres.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC then replaces damaged protected system files using that repaired source.
Run DISM
- Select Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Look for a successful completion message.
After DISM completes successfully, run System File Checker in the same elevated window:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and open the program or service that produced the error.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. Restart before testing, even if the command appears to complete without errors.
Manually hunting for a matching DLL, build, and architecture is slower and can leave Windows with a file that does not belong to the installed system. If you want help identifying what changed during repeated repair attempts, Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows reported issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required.
If DISM cannot find source files
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the PC.
- Run the DISM and SFC commands again in that order.
If DISM still reports that source files could not be found, use a Windows installation source that matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build. An unmatched or random ISO can make the problem worse. If SFC says it could not repair some files, inspect:

Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a detection, although quarantine is only one possible cause. Do not restore a file solely because its name is wsmres.dll.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
WsmRes.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
- If the file is identified as a genuine Microsoft-signed system component and the detection is demonstrably false, follow Windows Security’s Restore or Allow option.
If Defender detects the file again, do not keep restoring it. Run a full scan and investigate the detection. For persistent suspicion, use Microsoft Defender Offline. A malware-damaged system should be scanned before any manual file replacement.

After restoring a verified file, run DISM and SFC anyway. Those commands can restore the correct protected copy and repair related component-store damage.

Fix 3: Complete Windows Update and restart
Time needed: 10 minutes to several hours.
An interrupted update or servicing operation can leave Windows components in an incomplete state.
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Windows Update.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Once updates are complete, run DISM and SFC again.
Do not use a Windows 7 copy of WsmRes.dll on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Older Microsoft file tables list release-specific versions, but those values must not be treated as universal. Windows releases and servicing levels use different files.
Fix 4: Undo a recent system change with System Restore
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.
Use this when the error began after a cleanup utility, driver installation, update, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.
System Restore reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal documents. Run DISM and SFC after Windows starts again if the DLL error remains.
Fix 5: Repair the program that reports the error
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
If the message appears only when opening a particular third-party application, repair or reinstall that application after repairing Windows. Public evidence does not establish a particular game, launcher, or installer as a normal source of wsmres.dll; the parent program may simply be the first thing that calls a damaged WinRM component.
Use the application’s own repair option if available:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Restart and test the application.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer. Do not replace wsmres.dll with a file bundled by an unrelated program.
If the application is still failing after Windows repair and a clean reinstall, check its own logs and support documentation. The program may have a separate configuration or dependency problem.
Fix 6: Check WinRM rather than the DLL
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
A wsmres.dll loader error and a broken WinRM configuration are different problems. Repairing the file will not fix an incorrect listener, firewall rule, policy, certificate, or service state.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
winrm get winrm/config
To inspect configured listeners, run:
winrm enumerate winrm/config/listener
These commands diagnose WinRM configuration. They do not restore wsmres.dll.
If WinRM itself is the symptom, check:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Remote Management (WS-Management).
- Check its status and startup configuration.
- Review the relevant firewall, policy, certificate, and listener settings.
Do not change WinRM settings randomly on a managed computer. Contact the system administrator if the PC is controlled by an organization.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when diagnostics point to them
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.
A driver is not the normal source of wsmres.dll, but storage damage, network-management software, or a recent device driver can contribute to broader Windows failures.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 WsmRes.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. wsmres.dll is documented as a WinRM resource file, not as a self-registering application component.
The command may produce an entry-point error, or it may appear to complete without repairing the underlying Windows component. It does not restore a missing file, correct its architecture, repair the component store, or fix WinRM configuration.
Do not download wsmres.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, a modified file, the wrong architecture, or a file from another Windows build. Even a clean copy may not fix the component-store damage that caused the error.

Common causes
The likely causes are:
- Corruption of a protected Windows file
- An interrupted update or servicing operation
- Accidental deletion or aggressive cleanup software
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk or filesystem damage
- Malware damage
- A manually copied file with the wrong architecture or build
- A damaged WinRM or Windows installation
- A recent update, driver, or software change
If storage errors are suspected, back up important data and inspect Event Viewer and drive health. chkdsk /f C: may be appropriate in that situation, but it is not a direct DLL repair and may require a restart.
When to use a Windows repair installation
If DISM cannot repair the component store, SFC continues to report unrepaired files, and System Restore is unavailable, use Microsoft’s supported in-place Windows repair path with installation media matching the installed edition, language, architecture, and build.
Seek professional help before proceeding if:
- The drive reports repeated errors
- Windows cannot complete updates
- Malware remains detected
- The PC is business-managed
- Important data has not been backed up
- WinRM is required for remote administration
FAQ
Is wsmres.dll malware?
No. wsmres.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component associated with WinRM. A file with that name in an unexpected folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, or repeatedly detected by Defender should be treated cautiously.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is wsmres.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No evidence supports that classification. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the appropriate response unless a separate diagnostic identifies one of those components.
Should I copy wsmres.dll into System32?
No. Manually copying a DLL can create an architecture or build mismatch. Run DISM followed by SFC so Windows selects the correct protected file.
Why are both System32 and SysWOW64 mentioned?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally holds native 64-bit files and SysWOW64 holds 32-bit files. Windows redirects access for compatible 32-bit programs.
Will reinstalling the affected game fix the error?
Not necessarily. The file belongs to Windows and WinRM, so repair Windows first. Reinstall the application only if it remains damaged after DISM and SFC complete successfully.
