What wwanpref.dll does
WWAN means Wireless Wide Area Network. In practical terms, it is the Windows side of a cellular data connection, similar to the mobile broadband connection provided by a USB modem or an LTE or 5G adapter.
wwanpref.dll is associated with Windows profile settings for those connections. It is part of Windows rather than a separately installed “Wireless WAN Profile Settings Editor” application.

The historical location is:
%SystemRoot%System32wwanpref.dll
On a normal Windows installation, %SystemRoot% is usually C:Windows. Do not assume that every copy with this filename is genuine. A file with the right name in a game folder, Downloads, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves investigation.
Historical version examples
Microsoft file inventories document wwanpref.dll in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1-era releases. These examples show why matching the Windows build and architecture matters. They are not a universal version list for every current Windows installation.

Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds can have different file versions and sizes. A copied DLL from another computer, Windows release, or architecture can be incompatible even when the filename matches.

You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because wwanpref.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wwanpref.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting wwanpref.dll.”
- “Error loading wwanpref.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “wwanpref.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader-style messages. The exact wording can vary by application and Windows version.
Importantly, “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wwanpref.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it. The underlying problem could be a damaged Windows component, a mismatched driver, a missing dependency, or an invalid replacement file.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
This is the safest first fix because wwanpref.dll is a Windows component.
Install pending updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
Try the action that previously produced the error. If it still appears, continue with DISM and System File Checker.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which supplies the source files used by System File Checker.
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window until the scan reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when it finishes and test again.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. Restart before deciding whether the repair worked.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow a second time. For more detail, inspect:

If DISM cannot use Windows Update as its repair source, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with a real path to a matching Windows repair source. Do not guess the path or use installation media from an unrelated Windows release.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Fix 2: Check whether security software quarantined the file
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a damaged file, a suspicious replacement, or a false positive.

In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
wwanpref.dll.
Do not blindly restore the file. First check:
- Whether the original path was under the Windows directory.
- Whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature.
- Whether Windows Security identifies a threat.
- Whether a full scan reports other suspicious files.
If a detection remains active, restoring the file may simply cause Windows Security to quarantine it again. Resolve the detection and scan the system instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
Check the file path and signature
If a copy exists, right-click it and choose Properties. Review the General tab for its location, then open Digital Signatures.
A legitimate system copy should be in the expected Windows system directory and should identify Microsoft as the signer. The exact tab layout can vary between Windows builds.
You can also check the expected location from an elevated Command Prompt:

If the file is absent, that does not prove that the entire Windows component is gone. DISM and SFC are still the correct recovery tools.
Fix 3: Repair the WWAN or modem driver
A driver problem is more likely when the error appears only while:
- Connecting to cellular data.
- Opening mobile-broadband settings.
- Using a SIM-enabled laptop.
- Starting a USB modem.
- Running an OEM connection utility.
Microsoft’s WWAN service manages mobile-broadband adapters and connections. The driver and Windows WWAN stack must agree, so a driver change can expose a problem that was not visible during ordinary desktop use.
Update the adapter through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a cellular modem, WWAN adapter, mobile-broadband adapter, or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Also inspect Modems, Ports (COM & LPT), and Other devices if the hardware does not appear under Network adapters.

Reinstall the OEM driver
If the automatic search does not help:
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected WWAN or modem device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver and connection software from the computer or modem manufacturer’s official support page.
Use the package intended for the exact model and Windows architecture. Do not replace a driver package with a standalone DLL.
Finding the correct modem, chipset, and OEM driver versions manually can take time, particularly after a clean Windows installation. If the error began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that button is available. Restart and test the cellular connection again.
Fix 4: Repair the Windows installation
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or several unrelated Windows components are damaged, use a broader recovery option.

Eligible Windows 11 installations may show:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, personal files, and settings. The option is not available on every Windows configuration.
System Restore
System Restore is useful when the error began after an update, driver installation, cleanup tool, or system change.
- Open Start.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal documents and photos.
If the problem started immediately after a Windows update, Windows recovery options may also allow you to uninstall the recent update. Back up important data before using major recovery operations.
What not to do
Do not download wwanpref.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL downloads can contain malware or a file built for the wrong Windows release and architecture. A replacement can also hide the real cause, such as component-store corruption or a missing dependency.
There is no official standalone Microsoft wwanpref.dll download or redistributable package. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or the official WWAN driver package for your hardware.
Do not copy a DLL into an application folder
wwanpref.dll is a Windows component, not standard game middleware. Copying it beside a game or application may cause Windows to load the wrong file and will not repair the system copy.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use different system redirection rules, but that is not a reason to copy an x64 DLL into an application directory. Repair the Windows installation and the application’s actual dependencies instead.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Public export information for wwanpref.dll lists DllMain, DllGetClassObject, and DllCanUnloadNow, not DllRegisterServer.
Running:
regsvr32 "%windir%System32wwanpref.dll"
is therefore not a normal repair step and may produce an entry-point error. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without evidence
Those runtimes are common causes of application errors, but wwanpref.dll is a Windows WWAN component rather than a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET assembly. Reinstalling them is not a targeted fix for this file.

Only as an advanced repair using a known-good file from the same Windows build and architecture, after identifying the exact damaged file. Manual replacement is not the normal fix and should never involve a random DLL download.
What if nothing works?
If SFC and DISM fail repeatedly, use Windows 11’s repair reinstall when available, System Restore, or Windows recovery. If the error is limited to cellular hardware, reinstall the OEM WWAN or modem driver and support package.
