Install the June 2010 DirectX runtime
Modern Windows includes current DirectX components, but that does not guarantee that optional legacy XACT libraries are installed. Microsoft lists XACT among the legacy components supplied by the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010).

The downloadable package is an archive. Do not try to run it as though it were the installer itself.
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exefrom Microsoft. - Open File Explorer and create a temporary folder, such as
C:DXRedist. - Run the downloaded file.
- When asked where to extract the files, select the temporary folder.
- Open that folder after extraction finishes.
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator. - Accept the license terms and complete the setup.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected game or application again.
The installer adds legacy side-by-side files. It does not replace DirectX 12 or remove the modern DirectX runtime.

If the June 2010 package is unavailable or cannot complete, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. The web installer can download and install optional legacy components, including XACT-related files.
If the installer reports that setup cannot continue
Temporarily close the game launcher, overlays, hardware utilities, and other programs that may be using DirectX. Then restart Windows and run DXSETUP.exe again as administrator.
If setup repeatedly fails, note the exact installer message. Do not replace the missing file with a download from a DLL website. The failure may involve Windows servicing, antivirus interference, a damaged application, or an architecture mismatch.
Understand the error you are seeing
Windows may display any of these messages:
- “xactengine3_7.dll was not found”
- “The program can’t start because xactengine3_7.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Cannot find
C:WindowsSystem32xactengine3_7.dll.” - “Failed to load xactengine3_7.dll.”
- “The file xactengine3_7.dll is missing or corrupt.”
- “xactengine3_7.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all indicate the same failure. A missing-file message usually means the legacy runtime was never installed, while a “not designed to run” message can indicate a damaged or wrong-architecture DLL. The affected game can also have an incomplete installation or expect a private copy in its own folder.
XACT is an older Microsoft audio technology and is no longer supported for new Windows development. Existing games can still depend on its redistributable files.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
The application’s architecture determines which runtime library it loads.
- A 32-bit game requires the x86 legacy runtime.
- A 64-bit game requires the x64 legacy runtime.
- On 64-bit Windows, install the official runtime package instead of guessing which file belongs in
System32orSysWOW64.
A 32-bit game running on 64-bit Windows is normal. Do not assume that the operating system’s 64-bit status means the game needs a manually copied 64-bit DLL.
Check whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
Windows does not always display the architecture clearly in the file properties, but these checks can help:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Start the program until the error appears.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Details.
- Find the program’s executable.
- If it is shown as
program.exe (32 bit), it is a 32-bit process.
You can also check the game’s installation folder for separate x86, x64, Win32, or Win64 folders. Treat those names as clues rather than proof, because launchers and helper processes can use a different architecture from the main game.
If the error includes 0xc000007b, investigate the architecture of every involved dependency. Repeatedly copying xactengine3_7.dll will not correct a broader 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
Repair the affected game or application
If the June 2010 runtime installs successfully but the same error remains, repair the program that launches it. Some applications keep private copies of legacy libraries in their own installation folders, and those files can be missing or damaged even when the system runtime is installed.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
Steam may download a missing or damaged file. If verification reports a problem but the error continues, use the game’s uninstall option and reinstall it from the official launcher.
Recommended Free Tools
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game and click the three-dot menu.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Wait for verification to finish, then launch the game again.
For another launcher, look for Repair, Verify, Scan, or Check files. If no repair function exists, reinstall the application using its official installer.
Do not copy a DLL from another game. Different games can require different builds, related XACT files, or a private application-folder deployment.
Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a runtime file after an update, repair, or application installation.

SFC and DISM are not normally the primary fix for this DLL because XACT is an optional legacy runtime, not a standard protected Windows component. They are appropriate when several Windows programs fail, the message says the file is not designed to run on Windows, or Windows itself appears damaged.
First run DISM, then SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the June 2010 DirectX runtime if the XACT error remains.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files. Neither command is guaranteed to restore an optional game dependency that Windows does not own.
If manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows issues and identify repair work; its full version performs the repair. Reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when that program owns a damaged private copy.

Graphics and audio drivers are separate from xactengine3_7.dll. Updating a driver will not normally install this missing XACT library, but it can be relevant when the game also crashes with graphics, sound, or device errors.
Use Windows’ built-in process first:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters for graphics drivers or Sound, video and game controllers for audio drivers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also install the current driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer. Do not remove a working driver solely because xactengine3_7.dll is missing.
If checking many hardware devices manually is slowing down the diagnosis, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its full version performs the driver installation. The legacy DirectX runtime and the affected application still need to be repaired separately.
Use System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the problem began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or application change.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore changes system configuration and installed programs but does not remove personal files. It should not be the first step for a simple missing XACT dependency, and it cannot substitute for installing the official legacy runtime.
What not to do
Do not download the standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, a tampered file, or a file missing related XACT dependencies. A copied DLL may also hide the real problem, such as an incomplete game installation or antivirus quarantine.
Use Microsoft’s June 2010 runtime or the affected application’s official installer instead.
Do not overwrite System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders contain architecture-specific Windows libraries. Copying a file into the wrong folder can create a new loading failure and makes later troubleshooting harder.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. XACT is normally loaded by the application as a runtime library, not registered as a COM component. Running commands such as these is therefore not the normal repair:
regsvr32 xactengine3_7.dll
regsvr32 /u xactengine3_7.dll
Do not install unrelated runtimes automatically
Visual C++ Redistributables, .NET, and graphics drivers are separate dependencies. Install them when the error names them or diagnostics identify them, not as a substitute for the June 2010 DirectX runtime.
If the error still persists
Collect these details before seeking further support:
- The complete error message
- The name of the game or application
- The executable’s architecture
- The path shown in the error
- Any crash code, especially
0xc000007b - Whether the June 2010 installer completed successfully
- Whether Steam, Epic, or another launcher verified the files
- The result shown in Windows Security Protection History
- Whether one application fails or every older game fails
If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application first. If several games fail, inspect antivirus history, disk health, Windows integrity, and recent system changes. A successful runtime installation followed by the same message usually points to a damaged private application copy, a wrong-architecture dependency, or a launcher installation problem rather than a need for another standalone DLL.
