If Windows reports that xapofx1_2.dll is missing, the application cannot load the legacy DirectX audio-effects library it expects. A xapofx1_2.dll error can also indicate a damaged file, the wrong x86 or x64 architecture, or a dependency that Windows cannot load.

Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- If an older game stopped working after a clean Windows installation, start with the official DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010).
- If only one Steam, Epic, GOG, or other game is affected, verify or repair that game before changing Windows.
- If the file was recently quarantined, check Windows Security Protection history and reinstall the application if necessary.
- If the error says “The specified module could not be found” even though the DLL is visible, treat it as a dependency, architecture, or search-path problem.
- If several unrelated applications fail, run DISM followed by SFC and investigate broader Windows corruption.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver, Windows update, cleanup utility, or software change, consider System Restore.
- If the DLL loads but the game reports an audio-device initialization failure, update or reinstall the relevant audio or graphics driver.
Do not begin by downloading an isolated DLL from a random website, copying it into System32, or running regsvr32. Those actions often produce a mismatched repair and can introduce an unsafe or modified file.

What xapofx1_2.dll actually is
xapofx1_2.dll is a Microsoft XAPOFX library used with XAudio2. XAPOFX supplies audio effects such as echo, equalization, mastering limiting, and reverb for applications built around XAudio2. Microsoft documents these effects through the XAPOFX overview and the CreateFX API.

This is a legacy, side-by-side DirectX component. It is not:
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A .NET assembly
- A graphics driver
- A normal Windows executable
- A file that
regsvr32normally registers
Older XAudio2 versions were distributed as redistributable DLLs through the DirectX SDK. Microsoft explains this history in its XAudio2 versions documentation.
Modern Windows installations can have DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 while still lacking optional legacy DirectX files. The DirectX version shown by dxdiag describes the modern graphics and multimedia components available to Windows; it does not prove that every older side-by-side runtime DLL is installed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe application that reports the error may expect the DLL in its own installation folder, or it may rely on the shared legacy DirectX runtime. That is why repairing the application and installing the official runtime are both important.
Fix 1: Install the official DirectX End-User Runtimes
For a genuine missing xapofx1_2.dll error, this is the safest general repair.
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package includes legacy side-by-side DirectX components used by older games and applications. It does not replace DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, and it does not downgrade the DirectX version reported by Windows.
Install the runtime
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) download page.
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. - Run the downloaded file.
- Accept the license terms.
- When asked for an extraction location, choose a new empty folder such as
C:\DXRedist. - Open the extraction folder in File Explorer.
- Right-click
DXSETUP.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms in the DirectX setup program.
- Allow the installation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected game or application again.
The downloaded executable is an extractor. The actual installation is performed by DXSETUP.exe, so extracting the package without running setup does not complete the repair.

How to tell whether it worked
The original missing-DLL message should disappear when the program starts. The installer may also report that the legacy components are already installed or successfully updated.
Do not expect dxdiag to show a separate “June 2010” DirectX version. The package adds optional legacy files alongside newer DirectX components.
If the error remains after setup:
- Restart Windows once more if the application was open during installation.
- Repair or verify the affected application.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Continue with the application-local and dependency checks below.
Microsoft also provides an official DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. The offline June 2010 package is generally easier to use when repairing several machines or when the affected computer has unreliable internet access.
Fix 2: Verify or repair the affected game
If only one game reports the error, its installation may be incomplete. The game may have expected to install a private DirectX copy, or its bundled runtime setup may have been skipped or interrupted.

Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to compare and replace damaged files.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game again.
If Steam restores files or runs a prerequisite installer, allow that process to finish. If the game still fails, open its installation folder and look for a Redist, DirectX, or CommonRedist folder. If it contains DXSETUP.exe, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
Epic Games
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the verification to complete.
- Start the game again.
GOG or another launcher
Open the game’s menu and look for Manage installation, Verify, Repair, or a similarly named command. Launcher labels differ, but the purpose is the same: replace missing or damaged files from the publisher’s package.
Repair an installed Windows application
For a program installed through Windows or a conventional installer:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its menu button.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Microsoft describes this process in its guidance for repairing apps and programs.
If repair does not help, uninstall and reinstall the application using its original installer or the publisher’s official launcher. When a file belongs to one specific game, reinstalling that game is the definitive way to restore its application-local copy.
Fix 3: Check the application folder and architecture
A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program do not load the same DLL architecture.
On 64-bit Windows:
- A native 64-bit DLL normally belongs in
C:\Windows\System32. - A 32-bit DLL normally belongs in
C:\Windows\SysWOW64. - A 32-bit application needs the x86 version even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
- A native 64-bit application needs the x64 version.
The folder names are unintuitive: System32 contains 64-bit system components on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit components.

Check for an application-local copy
- Right-click the game or program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the path in Target.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Look for
xapofx1_2.dllbeside the program’s executable. - Also inspect folders named
Redist,DirectX,CommonRedist, orbin.
An application-local DLL can take precedence over a shared Windows copy. If that copy is damaged or belongs to the wrong architecture, the application can fail even when another copy exists elsewhere.
Do not solve this by copying a DLL from another computer. Use the game’s verification feature, its bundled installer, or the official Microsoft DirectX package.
How to identify an architecture mismatch
Architecture is usually documented by the game publisher or launcher. The installation path can also provide a clue:
C:\Program Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.C:\Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications.
These paths are not proof because installers can use custom locations. If the error includes 0xc000007b, “not designed to run on Windows,” or similar wording, suspect a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch or a damaged dependency rather than assuming xapofx1_2.dll is the only problem.
Do not rename XAPOFX1_5.dll, another XAPOFX file, or an unrelated DLL to xapofx1_2.dll. The filenames represent separate versioned libraries and are not interchangeable.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove a DLL from a game folder after an update or scan. A legitimate runtime file can also be flagged after the application’s files change.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry related to the affected game or
xapofx1_2.dll. - Confirm the original file path.
- Restore the file only when you can verify that it came from the official game installer or Microsoft’s official DirectX package.
Microsoft explains quarantine and restoration in its Protection History guidance.

If Defender removed a file from a game directory, verify or reinstall the game instead. That restores the complete application set and avoids bringing back a modified file.
After reinstalling:
- Update the security definitions if Windows Security requests it.
- Run a scan.
- Verify the game files again.
- Start the application.
If the same official file is repeatedly quarantined, leave it quarantined and contact the application publisher. Repeatedly disabling protection or creating a broad exclusion can expose the computer to unrelated threats.
Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are not the first-line repair for a missing optional DirectX DLL. The June 2010 DirectX installer is the correct source for that component.
Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated programs are failing, Windows components are behaving abnormally, or the error appears alongside other system corruption.

- Wait for the operation to finish.
Run SFC
After DISM completes, enter:
sfc /scannow

What the results mean
- If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, Windows did not identify damaged protected system files.
- If SFC repairs corrupted files, restart and test again.
- If SFC cannot complete repairs, run DISM again after Windows Update has completed, then run SFC again.
- If the original program still reports
xapofx1_2.dllmissing, reinstall the legacy DirectX runtime or the application. SFC is not guaranteed to restore an optional legacy DirectX SDK component.
Running DISM and SFC by hand can mean repeating repairs and reading logs without knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows exactly what is wrong, while the repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when the game owns the file.
Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates, but do not expect them to supply this DLL
Windows Update is useful for general system health, security, and compatibility. It does not normally install every optional legacy DirectX SDK component.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
- Test the affected application.
If the only problem is xapofx1_2.dll, Windows Update alone may not resolve it. Use the official DirectX runtime and application repair steps as well.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after:
- A Windows update
- A driver installation
- A cleanup utility
- A software removal
- A system configuration change
It is not the first choice for a game that never worked on the computer, because the legacy runtime may simply never have been installed.
Start System Restore
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next and then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft describes System Restore as a way to revert system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without affecting personal files.
If there is no suitable restore point, continue with the official DirectX installation and application repair instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Update or reinstall audio and graphics drivers
A driver is relevant when the DLL loads successfully but the application then reports an audio-device initialization failure, missing output device, crash during sound startup, or a problem after a hardware change.
A driver is not the normal fix for a literal “xapofx1_2.dll is missing” message.
Update a sound device
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any available driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
For HDMI or DisplayPort audio, also expand Display adapters, right-click the graphics adapter, and choose Update driver.
Recommended Free Tools
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain the driver from the computer, motherboard, or graphics-device manufacturer. Use the model-specific package and match the Windows architecture.
Reinstall a device
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to rediscover the device.
- Install the manufacturer’s current driver if Windows does not do so automatically.
Do not remove a driver package blindly when you have no replacement and the computer depends on that device for audio or display output. Download the correct replacement first.
Manually comparing audio, chipset, and graphics driver versions means hunting through vendor pages and guessing which of many drivers is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that shows exactly what is outdated, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and cannot replace reinstalling a game that owns a damaged application-local DLL.
Fix 9: Check Windows Features only for a separate legacy requirement
Windows Features does not normally install xapofx1_2.dll. Do not enable features at random to repair this specific error.
If the game separately reports that it needs DirectPlay or another legacy Windows feature:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Select DirectPlay, if the application specifically requires it.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to install the feature.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
Treat DirectPlay as a separate compatibility requirement. It does not replace the official DirectX End-User Runtimes.
Why regsvr32 is the wrong repair
Do not run:
regsvr32 XAPOFX1_2.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLL or OCX files that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. Microsoft documents this requirement in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
XAPOFX is used through XAudio2 effect chains and the documented CreateFX API, not through COM-style DLL registration. Running regsvr32 cannot install the DirectX runtime, correct the application’s architecture, or restore a missing dependency.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites offering an isolated xapofx1_2.dll download. A loose file can be:
- Modified or malicious
- The wrong x86 or x64 architecture
- A different legacy build
- Missing a required dependency
- Placed in a directory the application does not search
- In conflict with an application-local copy
Even a file that appears to have the right name may not be the correct file for the program. Manual copying can hide the original installation problem and lead to another loader error later.
Use these safe sources instead:
- The affected game’s official installer or launcher repair feature
- The game’s bundled
DXSETUP.exe - Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
- Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer
Do not replace xapofx1_2.dll with xapofx1_5.dll. They are separate versioned libraries, and renaming one does not make it compatible with an application requesting the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the different error messages mean
“The program can’t start because XAPOFX1_2.dll is missing”
The file is absent from the locations searched by the application. Install the official legacy DirectX runtime, then verify or reinstall the application.
“The code execution cannot proceed because XAPOFX1_2.dll was not found”
This is another loader message for a missing or inaccessible file. Apply the same repair order, beginning with the official runtime and application verification.
“The specified module could not be found”
This wording does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. The file may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, the application may be loading the wrong architecture, or the search path may be resolving to an invalid copy.
Repair the application, reinstall the official DirectX components, and remove any unofficial application-local copy through the application’s installer.
“XAPOFX1_2.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This commonly points to a corrupted file, wrong architecture, or mismatched copy. Do not download another isolated DLL. Reinstall from the official Microsoft package or the application’s original installer.
Error 0xc000007b
This often indicates an architecture or dependency mismatch involving more than one DLL. Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit, verify the game files, install the official legacy DirectX runtime, and investigate other dependencies only if the application reports them separately.
Why Visual C++ and .NET usually do not help
Visual C++ redistributables and .NET runtimes do not supply xapofx1_2.dll.
Install them only when the application reports a separate missing Visual C++ or .NET component. Installing unrelated runtime packages will not create the legacy XAPOFX library and can make troubleshooting less clear.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The same applies to graphics and audio drivers. Update drivers when the application reports a device or initialization failure, not as the first response to a missing DLL message.
Final escalation checklist
If the error remains after the official DirectX installation and application repair, record the following before contacting the publisher:
- The complete error text
- The exact game or program name
- The executable that produces the error
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Your Windows version
- Whether the problem affects one program or several
- Whether the problem began after an update, driver change, cleanup, or reinstall
- Whether Windows Security quarantined the file
- Whether the application folder contains its own DirectX or runtime directory
- Whether the official June 2010 DirectX setup completed successfully
- Whether Steam, Epic, GOG, or another launcher verified the files
- Whether DISM and SFC reported corruption
The correct repair is usually one of two things: install the official legacy DirectX side-by-side runtime, or repair the specific application that owns the missing copy. If the DLL is present but still will not load, investigate architecture, dependencies, quarantine history, and the application’s search path rather than copying another file over it.
