Best 8K Monitor 2024: The Real 8K Options for Gaming and Creative Work

Genuine 8K gaming monitors were rare in 2024. Here is how the Dell UP3218K and later ASUS PA32KCX compare—and why most gamers should choose high-refresh 4K instead.

The best genuine 8K monitor available to consider for a 2024-focused buying guide is the Dell UltraSharp 32 8K Monitor UP3218K. However, it is a professional 60Hz display—not a gaming-first monitor. The later ASUS ProArt Display 8K PA32KCX is technically more advanced, but it is also a 60Hz-class creator monitor. For competitive gaming and most PC players, a high-refresh 4K monitor is the better choice.

That distinction matters: a graphics card being able to output an 8K signal does not mean it can render demanding games at native 8K and 60 frames per second.

What counts as an 8K monitor?

For desktop displays, 8K usually means 7680×4320, or 33.2 million pixels. That is four times the pixel count of 4K UHD and 16 times that of 1080p. At around 32 inches, it produces roughly 275–280 pixels per inch, making individual pixels extremely difficult to see at normal desk distance.

That is different from DCI 8K, which uses 8192×4320 and is primarily a cinema-production format. A 5K or 6K monitor is also not an 8K monitor, even if it offers a sharper or more useful desktop experience than many 4K screens.

For this guide, a qualifying display must have a native 7680×4320 panel. An “8K-compatible” monitor that accepts an 8K input but displays a lower native resolution does not qualify.

Best genuine 8K monitor for 2024: Dell UltraSharp 32 8K Monitor UP3218K

Best for: high-resolution photography, video, design, text, and specialist gaming.

The Dell UP3218K specification sheet lists a 31.5-inch IPS panel with 7680×4320 resolution, 280 PPI, 60Hz maximum refresh, 400 cd/m2 typical brightness, 10-bit color, 100% sRGB and Adobe RGB coverage, 98% DCI-P3 coverage, and a 6ms gray-to-gray response time.

Those specifications make it impressive for detailed still images, large editing timelines, intricate interfaces, and crisp scaled text. They do not make it a conventional gaming monitor. There is no high-refresh 144Hz or 240Hz mode, and the display is aimed at professional productivity and creative work rather than competitive motion clarity.

The important connection requirement

The Dell is not a simple single-cable 8K monitor. Dell specifies:

  • Two DisplayPort 1.4 connections for 7680×4320 at 60Hz.
  • One DisplayPort connection for 7680×4320 at 30Hz.

The monitor includes two DisplayPort cables. Dell’s setup guide covers the dual-input and tiled-display context.

Dell UP3218K setup checklist

  1. Confirm that the graphics card has two suitable DisplayPort outputs.
  2. Connect both outputs to the monitor using the supplied or certified equivalent cables.
  3. Install or update the graphics driver.
  4. Select 7680×4320 at 60Hz in Windows or the GPU control panel.
  5. If 60Hz is unavailable, test each cable and GPU output individually, confirm the monitor sees both inputs, and check the available DisplayPort mode.
  6. Use 30Hz temporarily to isolate a bandwidth, cable, driver, or compatibility problem.

Potential failure modes include one cable not being detected, an unsuitable GPU output, an older DisplayPort mode, driver incompatibility, or the display appearing as two tiled regions instead of one desktop.

Who should buy the Dell?

Buy it if your priority is genuine 8K sharpness, a large high-resolution workspace, Adobe RGB coverage, or detailed creative work—and you accept a 60Hz ceiling and dual-cable setup.

Avoid it if you want competitive gaming, low-latency motion, 120Hz or higher, strong HDR, simple connectivity, or a display that most gaming PCs can drive without compromises.

Best newer 8K display: ASUS ProArt Display 8K PA32KCX

Best for: professional HDR, color-critical work, video production, and buyers seeking the most advanced 8K desktop specification.

The ASUS ProArt PA32KCX should be treated as a later/current product, not silently backdated into a 2024 ranking. ASUS describes it as an 8K HDR Mini LED professional monitor.

Its listed features include a 32-inch 7680×4320 panel, 4,032-zone Mini LED backlighting, 1,200-nit peak brightness, 1,000-nit sustained brightness, DisplayHDR 1000 certification, true 10-bit color, a built-in motorized colorimeter, DisplayPort 2.1, two HDMI 2.1 ports, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. The detailed technical specifications list a 48–60Hz digital signal frequency.

The PA32KCX substantially modernizes 8K connectivity. It also offers Auto KVM, USB connectivity, picture-by-picture and picture-in-picture features, plus one Thunderbolt 4 port with up to 96W USB-C Power Delivery. Laptop buyers must still verify that their computer can output the required video signal; USB-C power delivery and display bandwidth are separate capabilities.

It remains a 60Hz-class display. Better inputs do not turn it into an 8K/120Hz gaming monitor. ASUS also lists a claimed Delta E below 1 and hardware-calibration features; these are manufacturer specifications rather than independent test results. HDR quality cannot be predicted from zone count and peak brightness alone, because blooming, tone mapping, sustained brightness, and viewing angle also matter.

Why there were so few 8K gaming monitors

In 2024, the market did not offer a convincing mainstream category of high-refresh, gaming-first 8K monitors. The leading desktop options were professional 60Hz displays for several reasons:

  • Rendering load: 8K has four times the pixel workload of 4K.
  • Bandwidth: Full-resolution, high-bit-depth signals require modern interfaces, Display Stream Compression, tiled DisplayPort, or multiple cables.
  • Limited demand: Most gamers prioritize refresh rate, latency, adaptive sync, and HDR over maximum pixel count.
  • Software scaling: At 32 inches, an unscaled 8K desktop makes interface elements extremely small.
  • Cost: The panel, electronics, backlight, and required GPU hardware make 8K a specialist purchase.

Both the Dell and ASUS can display games, but it is more accurate to call them 8K monitors that can be used for gaming than gaming monitors designed around competitive play.

Can your PC run 8K gaming?

Separate four different questions before buying:

  1. Can the GPU output 8K? This concerns ports, interface standards, DSC, and display compatibility.
  2. Can the game render at 8K? This depends on the title, settings, graphics card, and visual effects.
  3. Can the monitor accept the signal? The display may require dual cables, a particular input, or a specific bandwidth mode.
  4. Can the result meet your expectations? A 60Hz display, reconstructed image, or reduced settings may not suit your definition of gaming quality.

Current NVIDIA GeForce comparison pages list 8K at 60Hz with Display Stream Compression as a maximum digital-display mode for relevant cards. That is an output specification, not a promise of native 8K game performance. Likewise, the DisplayPort FAQ describes DisplayPort 2.1b support for 8K at 60Hz with full-color 4:4:4 and 30-bit HDR, while DSC enables higher-resolution combinations.

HDMI 2.1 can also support 8K/60Hz according to Dell’s HDMI guidance. Whether a particular PC can use that mode depends on the GPU, monitor, cable, driver, color depth, and game.

Native 8K versus upscaled 8K

A game may render internally at 4K or lower and upscale to 8K using a spatial or temporal reconstruction method. Dynamic resolution, supersampling, frame generation, and upscaling can all change the final result. Upscaled 8K output may look excellent, but it is not the same as rendering every frame natively at 7680×4320.

Do not assume a particular graphics card will maintain a particular frame rate. Performance varies substantially by game, settings, ray tracing, upscaling mode, and driver version.

Which games benefit most from 8K?

8K is most defensible for games where detail and a large static view matter more than rapid motion:

  • Turn-based strategy games.
  • City builders and simulation games.
  • Flight and space simulators.
  • Detailed adventure games.
  • Photo modes and screenshot capture.

Competitive shooters, fighting games, and fast racing games generally benefit more from high refresh and motion clarity. If your GPU cannot deliver an acceptable experience, 8K adds little practical value.

8K desktop scaling: the hidden trade-off

A 32-inch 8K screen is exceptionally sharp, but running the operating system at 100% scaling makes text and controls uncomfortably small for many people. Windows users will commonly experiment somewhere in the 200–300% range, although the right value depends on viewing distance, eyesight, application design, and personal preference.

macOS uses HiDPI “looks like” scaling, which can provide a sharp logical workspace while the panel still receives a high-resolution signal. In either operating system, some legacy applications may scale poorly or appear blurry. The practical benefit of 8K is usually a sharper scaled interface—not four times as much comfortably readable content.

8K versus the alternatives

Option Best for Main trade-off
8K monitor Specialist creative work, pixel density, detailed images, and selected cinematic games Very expensive, usually 60Hz, demanding connectivity and GPU requirements
High-refresh 4K monitor Competitive and general gaming Lower pixel density than 8K, but much better motion and broader availability
5K or 6K monitor Sharp desktop work and creative applications Not true 8K, but often a more practical productivity choice
8K television Large living-room gaming Usually too large for a desk and less suitable for desktop ergonomics and text

For a gaming-first purchase, look for a high-refresh 4K display with at least 144Hz where possible, adaptive sync, and suitable HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort connectivity. Specific models and prices should be checked separately because the best choice depends on panel type, HDR goals, GPU, and region.

Which 8K display should you choose?

  • Choose the Dell UP3218K if you specifically want a genuine 2024-era 8K desktop monitor and prioritize sharpness, workspace, photography, or color-focused productivity.
  • Choose the ASUS PA32KCX if you need a later/current professional 8K display with Mini LED HDR, modern inputs, hardware calibration, and creator-oriented workflow features.
  • Choose high-refresh 4K if gaming performance, competitive play, VRR, and motion clarity matter more than maximum resolution.
  • Choose 5K or 6K if you want a sharp professional desktop without the connectivity and cost of an 8K specialist display.
  • Choose an 8K TV only for a large-screen living-room setup where desk ergonomics and close-range text clarity are not the priority.

Final verdict

The Dell UP3218K is the most defensible answer to “best 8K monitor 2024,” but the qualification is essential: it is a 60Hz professional display, not a high-refresh gaming specialist. The ASUS PA32KCX is the stronger later technical option, particularly for HDR and color-critical work, but it remains expensive and limited to 60Hz-class operation.

For most gamers, 8K was the wrong target in 2024. A high-refresh 4K monitor delivers a more balanced combination of image quality, frame rate, latency, compatibility, and price. Buy 8K only when extraordinary pixel density or professional image quality matters more to you than refresh rate and value.
