The xaudio2_3.dll error usually means an older game or application cannot find the legacy XAudio2 component it was built to use. When xaudio2_3.dll is missing on Windows 11 or Windows 10, reinstall Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime first, then verify the game’s files.
Do not download a loose copy of the DLL from an arbitrary website. The file may be malicious, corrupted, the wrong architecture, or unrelated to the version your game needs.

Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, note what the error is actually telling you.
- Which game or program refuses to start?
- Did the problem begin after a game update, Windows update, cleanup operation, antivirus scan, or driver installation?
- Does the error mention the game’s installation folder,
System32, orSysWOW64? - Is the game likely 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does the program launch without sound, or does it stop before launching?
- Did Windows Security recently quarantine anything?
- Is this happening with one game or several programs?
The fastest repair path is usually:
- Install the official Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtimes from June 2010.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
- Verify or repair the game files through Steam, Epic Games, GOG, or the publisher’s launcher.
- Check whether antivirus removed the file.
- Investigate architecture, corrupted Windows components, or drivers only if the earlier steps fail.
What xaudio2_3.dll actually is
xaudio2_3.dll belongs to Microsoft’s XAudio2 family, a low-level audio API designed for games. XAudio2 handles tasks such as sound playback, voices, mixing, and audio effects. It is part of the legacy DirectX runtime rather than Visual C++ or .NET. Microsoft describes the API and its history in its XAudio2 introduction.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
The filename identifies XAudio2 version 2.3. That does not mean the DirectX installer itself has the same version number. The older XAudio2 libraries were distributed as side-by-side DirectX SDK components. Newer Windows releases contain newer XAudio2 libraries, not every historical DLL.
Windows 8 introduced XAUDIO2_8.DLL, while Windows 10 introduced XAUDIO2_9.DLL. A game explicitly linked to xaudio2_3.dll cannot automatically use XAUDIO2_8.DLL or XAUDIO2_9.DLL as a substitute. Microsoft documents this distinction in its XAudio2 version history.
That is why a computer can have DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 and still show a missing xaudio2_3.dll error. The DirectX version shown by dxdiag describes the modern Windows graphics and multimedia platform. It does not prove that every optional legacy DirectX side-by-side component is installed.

This is the most likely repair when an older game specifically names xaudio2_3.dll.
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 package contains the June 2010 and earlier side-by-side DirectX components. It does not replace or downgrade the DirectX version built into Windows.
Install the offline package
- Close the affected game and its launcher.
- Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 download page.
- Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. - When the download finishes, open File Explorer and go to your Downloads folder.
- Right-click
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. - Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- When the installer asks where to extract the files, choose a temporary folder such as
C:\DXRedist. - Open that folder after extraction completes.
- Find
DXSETUP.exe. - Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator. - Accept the DirectX setup terms and allow the installation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the game again from its normal launcher.
The important step is running DXSETUP.exe from the extracted folder. Downloading the archive alone does not install the runtime.
If the setup reports that a newer DirectX version is already installed, continue with the installation when possible. That message usually refers to the DirectX core already included in Windows, not the optional legacy components the game needs.

Use the web installer when appropriate
Microsoft also provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, commonly downloaded as dxwebsetup.exe.
The web installer is convenient when:
- The computer has reliable internet access.
- You want the installer to obtain the missing optional components automatically.
- The offline package is inconvenient to download or extract.
The offline package is preferable when:
- The web installer fails.
- The computer has restricted or unreliable internet access.
- You need to repair the same game on more than one computer.
- The game’s installer runs from older media.
- You want the complete June 2010 side-by-side runtime available locally.
Neither package changes the DirectX version displayed by Windows. Their purpose is to add optional legacy files that older applications still request.
Fix 2: Verify or repair the game installation
Some games install their own private DirectX files beside the game executable. Windows normally searches an unpackaged application’s directory before checking system directories, so a game may depend on a copy inside its own folder.
If the error names a path similar to:
C:\Games\Example Game\XAudio2_3.dll
repair the game installation before copying anything into Windows folders.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan.
- Restart Steam if requested.
- Launch the game again.
Steam may replace a missing private DLL or restore a prerequisite installer that was removed during an update. Its documented process is described in Steam’s file verification instructions.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Click the three dots beside the game.
- Select Manage.
- Click Verify.
- Wait for the verification process to finish.
- Start the game again.
Epic’s documented procedure is available in its game verification support instructions.
GOG and other launchers
Open the game’s management menu and look for Verify, Repair, Scan, or Check installation. The exact wording varies by launcher.
Some older games invoke DirectX, Visual C++, or another prerequisite installer during the first launch. If that secondary installer was canceled, open the game’s installation folder and look for a redist, _CommonRedist, DirectX, or Support folder. Run the supplied installer as administrator.

Steam specifically documents cases where a canceled secondary installer must be launched manually from the game directory in its launch troubleshooting guidance.
If verification reports damaged files repeatedly, uninstall and reinstall the game through its official launcher. A clean reinstall is more reliable than manually replacing one DLL.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
A game that worked previously and suddenly reports a missing DLL may have lost the file during an antivirus scan or game update.
To inspect Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection related to the game or DirectX.
- Note the original file path and the action Windows took.
Do not blindly select Restore or Allow on device for an unknown file. A quarantined file can be damaged, modified, or genuinely unsafe. The safer approach is to reinstall the game files through its launcher or reinstall the official Microsoft DirectX runtime.
If you are certain that a legitimate game file was quarantined, restore it only after checking the original path and then add an exclusion only when you understand why the detection occurred. Microsoft explains the available actions in its Protection History guidance.
If the DLL keeps disappearing after reinstalling it, run a full Windows Security scan before continuing. Replacing the file repeatedly without finding the cause will not solve the problem.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit program cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit program cannot load a 32-bit DLL. A mismatch can produce a missing-module message, a bad-image message, or the wording:
The file is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
On 64-bit Windows, the directory names are confusing:
C:\Windows\System32is normally the native 64-bit system directory.C:\Windows\SysWOW64is normally the 32-bit redirected system directory.
Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation for the file system redirector and 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows.
Do not move a DLL from System32 to SysWOW64, or the other way around, to see whether the error disappears. That can create a second problem and does not change the architecture of the file.
The safer approach is to run DXSETUP.exe and let the official installer place the appropriate runtime components. If the game uses a private copy, verify the game files so its installer can restore the correct version.
How to investigate the program architecture
Use the game’s official system requirements or documentation when available. Older games are often 32-bit, but the filename alone does not prove the required architecture.
You can also inspect the game’s executable properties:
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Right-click the main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Record the product and file information.
- Compare it with the game’s official requirements or support information.
The Details tab may not explicitly state x86 or x64. Do not treat the listed file size as proof of architecture. Let the DirectX installer or the game’s official installer supply the matching files.

Fix 5: Understand the full path in the error
The path is often more useful than the wording of the message.
The path points to the game folder
The program is probably using a private application-local copy.
Do this:
- Close the game.
- Verify its files through the launcher.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Run the game’s own prerequisite installer if it has one.
- Reinstall the game if verification does not restore the file.
Windows searches the application directory before system directories for ordinary unpackaged applications. Microsoft describes this behavior in its DLL search order documentation.
The path points to System32 or SysWOW64
Use the official June 2010 DirectX runtime. Do not copy a downloaded DLL into the named directory.
A path containing SysWOW64 usually indicates a 32-bit process on 64-bit Windows. A path containing System32 generally indicates the native system directory, despite the name.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
No path is shown
Start with the June 2010 DirectX runtime, then verify the game files. If the error remains, inspect the application log:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Find an error recorded at the time the game failed.
- Read the Faulting application path and Faulting module path.
The faulting module may be a different DLL. A message saying that xaudio2_3.dll could not be loaded can sometimes mean that one of its dependencies is missing or invalid.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are useful when Windows itself has damaged system components. They are not the primary installation method for an optional legacy DirectX DLL, so run the June 2010 DirectX setup first.
Use an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
DXSETUP.exeagain. - Test the affected program.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for Windows system-file repair. The procedure is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damaged protected system files. This does not prove that the optional DirectX runtime is installed.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the program again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the CBS log or repeat the repair after DISM completes successfully.
- DISM reports that source files could not be found: Windows may need access to Windows Update or matching installation media.
If repeating SFC and DISM leaves you guessing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problem and show what it found; its repair is performed by the full version, so it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when the file belongs to that game.
SFC and DISM do not justify downloading a replacement xaudio2_3.dll. If the official DirectX installer still fails, record the exact error and continue with the installer logs.
Fix 7: Investigate a failed DirectX installation
If DXSETUP.exe itself reports a bad-image error or refuses to complete:
- Restart Windows.
- Temporarily close game launchers and other installers.
- Run
DXSETUP.exeagain as administrator. - Check whether the same error appears.
- Look for these files:
C:\Windows\DirectX.log
C:\Windows\DXError.log
- Record the exact error code and the path named in the message.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the official June 2010 package.
Do not replace the installer’s DLLs manually. A “not designed to run on Windows” message usually indicates an invalid, corrupted, or architecture-mismatched image, but the precise cause depends on the complete error code and path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe public build information associated with known xaudio2_3.dll files is not a universal verification standard. Microsoft does not provide a current per-file hash table for this DLL, so a file’s reported size or version alone should not be treated as proof that it is safe or correct.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the symptom points to audio hardware
A missing xaudio2_3.dll is normally a runtime installation problem, not an audio-driver problem. Driver work becomes relevant when:
- The game launches but produces no sound.
- The game reports that it cannot create an audio device.
- Playback crashes after the game starts.
- Windows cannot see the speakers, headset, HDMI audio device, or controller audio device.
- The error names an audio device rather than a missing DLL.
Update audio and graphics drivers through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device used by the game.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Repeat the check under Display adapters if the game uses HDMI or DisplayPort audio through a graphics card.
Also check:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates if the section is available.
- Install a driver only when it matches your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
For the most reliable driver, use the support page supplied by the computer, motherboard, audio-device, or graphics-card manufacturer. Avoid generic driver packages that do not identify the exact hardware.

If you are hunting through Device Manager and manufacturer pages to determine which of several drivers is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver problem; the actual driver installation is performed by the full version, so it is optional and not a substitute for reinstalling the affected game.
Do not update drivers simply because xaudio2_3.dll is missing. First install the correct DirectX runtime and repair the game.
Fix 9: Use Windows Features only for separate legacy requirements
Windows Features does not install xaudio2_3.dll. Some older games also require DirectPlay, however, and that is a separate Windows component.
If the game specifically reports that DirectPlay is missing:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Expand Legacy Components.
- Select DirectPlay.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the game again.
Do not enable random features as a general DLL repair. DirectPlay can address a separate compatibility requirement, but it does not replace the legacy XAudio2 runtime.
Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the game worked recently and the failure began immediately after a driver installation, system update, cleanup operation, or security change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs while normally leaving personal files untouched. It is not a replacement for reinstalling a damaged game, so use it when the timing strongly points to a recent system change. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Most ordinary runtime DLLs are loaded by name and used through exported functions. Registration is only relevant when the DLL supports COM self-registration through DllRegisterServer. Microsoft describes that operation in its regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.
There is a historical exception for older XAudio2 versions. Legacy XAudio2 before version 2.8 used COM-based creation, and definitions for xaudio2_3.dll include registration exports. That means registration may technically apply to an intact, correctly matched copy.
It still cannot repair:
- A missing file.
- A corrupted file.
- A wrong-architecture file.
- A malware-replaced file.
- A missing dependency.
- A broken game installation.
Run the official DirectX setup first. If an installer specifically reports a registration failure and you have already installed a verified copy, use the matching command.

Do not manually copy a random DLL into System32
Manual copying is the most common wrong turn with this error.

A loose DLL can be:
- The wrong XAudio2 version.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Modified or corrupted.
- Missing its own dependencies.
- Intended for a different Windows installation.
- A disguised malicious file.
The safer sources are:
- Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 package.
- The game’s own verified installation files.
- A trusted original installation disc or backup.
- A publisher-supplied private runtime included with the application.
Windows searches the game directory before system directories, so a publisher-provided application-local DLL may be correct even when the same filename is absent from System32. Microsoft documents private DLL deployment and redirection in its DLL versioning and redirection guidance.

Do not use registry cleaners to solve this problem. Registry cleaners do not install the missing DirectX component and can create additional problems.
What to do when the DLL is present but the game still fails
If xaudio2_3.dll exists but the program still will not start, the file may not be the real fault.
Work through these checks:
- Confirm that the file is in the path named by the error.
- Verify the game files.
- Reinstall the official June 2010 DirectX runtime.
- Check whether another DLL is named in Event Viewer.
- Confirm that the game and DLL architecture match.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Disable overlays temporarily, including launcher, recording, or hardware-monitoring overlays.
- Check whether anti-cheat software is blocking the game.
- Test the game after a clean reinstall.
- Contact the game publisher if only that title fails.
If the program launches but has no sound, stop treating it as a missing-DLL problem. Check the selected Windows output device, the game’s audio settings, exclusive-mode settings, audio drivers, and HDMI or controller audio routing.

Frequently asked questions
Is xaudio2_3.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Not normally. Windows includes newer XAudio2 versions, but xaudio2_3.dll is a legacy side-by-side DirectX component. Older programs may still require it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does DirectX 12 include xaudio2_3.dll?
Having DirectX 12 does not prove that the legacy XAudio2 2.3 runtime is installed. Install the June 2010 End-User Runtime when an older game specifically requests this file.
Is xaudio2_3.dll a Visual C++ or .NET file?
No. Visual C++ Redistributables and .NET are separate prerequisites. They may be required by the same game, but repairing them does not normally restore xaudio2_3.dll.
Should I put the DLL in System32?
No. Let the official DirectX installer or the game’s installer place it. A game may correctly use a private copy beside its executable.
Does a 32-bit game need a 32-bit DLL?
Yes. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL. On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit system directory is commonly SysWOW64, despite its confusing name.

Usually not. It cannot create or repair a missing DLL. It may be relevant only after the correct legacy file is installed and an installer specifically reports a registration failure.
Should I update my audio driver?
Only when the program launches but has audio-device or playback problems. A missing xaudio2_3.dll is normally fixed by installing the legacy DirectX runtime or repairing the game.
What if the web installer does not work?
Use Microsoft’s offline directx_Jun2010_redist.exe package, extract it, and run DXSETUP.exe as administrator.
What if the file keeps disappearing?
Check Windows Security Protection History, run a malware scan, and reinstall the game or DirectX from an official source. Do not repeatedly restore an unknown DLL without checking why it was removed.
Is a clean Windows installation necessary?
Almost never as a first step. Install the official legacy DirectX runtime, verify the game, check quarantine and architecture, and use DISM, SFC, or System Restore only when the symptoms point to Windows damage or a recent system change.
